I love your clear and close up demonstration. When going to the next row, I usually chain one, and it is a slight flip of the work rather than the usual turn for other crochet rows. And yes, it is!
@@sylviamacias5187 I’m glad it was helpful! To go to a next row I would chain and then turn my work and then proceed to crochet as usual. And yes, you would end the project just like any normal hdc project. 🙂
Excellent explanation! I recently retired after 25 years of teaching middle school FACS, which included hand and machine sewing, cooking, etc. I didn't teach it during the regular school year, but I did teach single crochet to make a scarf and hand embroidery or counted cross-stitch as part of a summer school enrichment class for about 10-ish years. I'm curious. Do you use your videos as your method of introducing the stitches? I started with demonstrating live under a document camera but progressed to videos when that technology became more readily available. In fact, all my students' sewing projects were self-paced with them watching the videos on their own or in twos & threes. I became primarily the coach because I was able to reteach or reinforce lessons one-to-one when students got stuck.
I do use my videos when teaching the kids how to crochet. I find that they pick up the information faster that way. I am there guiding them with any extra help that they need. I love that you taught FACS as well! There are not a lot of us out there! :)

I had to finish your set of foundation chains by viewing the half double one. I believe Iunderstand the process😊 Another great video: Thank you. But I do have a question on all foundation chains. I frequently make doll clothing for my granddaughters; I can see that this would make a great neck. So, is there a process so one can join these chains to work in rounds?
Im fairly new to crochet and have learned what i know from watching videos...can you make the half double foundation chain or even the aingle crochet foundation chain and then treat it like the starting chain for a shell stitch? I made a baby blanket for a coworker using a shell stitch but didnt like how the foundation chains got kind of streteched out. After i put a border on it you couldnt really tell but i may not always want tot put a border on my projects.
This was a wonderful, clear demonstration of a HDC foundation chain. My question is this…my instructions were to chain a number stitches, then join with a SS and then continue the first row of HDC. How can I join this foundation chain so there are no gaps in the edges?
On Saturday I am actually going to post a video that shows just how to do this! It is a little tricky, but once you get the hang of it you'll be able to do it easily! :). Thanks for the kind feedback!
If I chain 1, I would chain 1, turn and go into the 1st stitch. With a half double crochet stitch (for the second row) you could alternately chain 2, turn, and then go into the second stitch. Either method works. Hope this helps! Happy crocheting! :)
Hiya, thank you for sharing this. With the first hdc does it count as just one stitch please, only when I look at the stitches it looks like it's created two.
Thank you. Each instructor I've watched always says "go through the two loops of the chain stitch formed. Then show the beautiful row of v's along the "bottom" of the row of stitches. I wish someone would actually compare the 'top' of the foundation chain to the 'bottom' of the chain and specify if the 'go through the two loops of the chain' is happening on the 'top' or 'bottom' of the foundation. Are you talking about when you chain and then put the first stitches into the chain for the next row? If so yes! If it is a stitch that has you skip stitches I have used a foundation start for those too, I just have to pay close attention to stitch count and how many stitches I need for the next row of stitching. Hope this helps! :)
Sorry if im unclear. What i mean is once your required chain length is done and your first DC goes into the third chain from the hook vs the first space.
@@JudyChristensen-v4o Yes. You could use this method for that. The foundation double crochet stitch would count as the chain start + the first row of DC. Hope that helps! :)
How do I count how many stitches I have done? I followed your instructions exactly but don’t understand which stitch starts at “1” - I need 183 of these.
At 2:47 in the video I am ready to go into the 1st stitch (it will be the one right next to the knot). At 4:33 I show the edge of this and you can see the V's of the stitches. Each V is one stitch for counting. I hope that helps! :)
@@valmatthews9117 for this tutorial I am using a slightly bigger yarn than 8 ply so I used a J (6.0mm) hook. For 8 ply I’d lean towards a smaller hook like a H (5.0mm) or G (4.5mm).
@hopecornerfarmcrochet thanks. I have used this stitch and like it. Need more practice to avoid slight bumps. Now to try the crochet into 3rd stitch...
might be a stupid question. So if a pattern asked to chain 101 followed by hdc, do i count this foundation chain as the first row and count 100 stitches? i hope my question makes sense

Can we use this method when the pattern calls for the first DC into 2nd or 3rd loop from the hook vs DC in every chain?
With 8 ply what size hook are you using? Please
@@valmatthews9117 practice makes perfect! When I am learning a new stitch I practice it a lot! Have a great day!
might be a stupid question. So if a pattern asked to chain 101 followed by hdc, do i count this foundation chain as the first row and count 100 stitches? i hope my question makes sense
It does make sense. Yes, you would count this as a chain and first row, so you would Foundation Half Double Crochet 100 times.
@@hopecornerfarmcrochet thank you!! i’ve always avoided foundation chains because I never get where the hook goes! your video is so easy to follow
@@NephiliDooley I am SO glad it helped you out! :)
So hard to see how you are getting four on the first stitch 😢
If you are talking about the counting, it is 4 yarn overs total for the stitch. I yarn over 4 times to make this stitch. I hope this helps! :)
I wish fingers were not in the way and I could better see what was going on 😢
Sorry that it wasn’t what you were looking for. Best of luck!
