The R-Code 427 is definitely the best high performance production engine ever from Ford. It tops them all from the BOSS 429 all the way down to the 289 hi po

They were going to build around 50 but no one would buy them so they semi homologated 2 more 427 GT500's.

And after that they would not let them race that engine because it was winning?

Everything Shelby did was bad a$$! No nonsense kind of leader who could put a team together, build a car and go beat Ferrari with a factory 289 small block (Shelby Daytona coupe). Americas best!

I'm a Ford guy for sure and they had some powerful engine back in the day and always was able to compete in professional racing venues back in the 60s-early seventies, but their engines never done that well in street racing with maybe a couple of exceptions. after 1968 Ford automobiles had to meet vibration and idling standards put in by some dumb big brass executives at Ford, all this gave people cars like the much detuned boss 429 cars and 428 Mach 1 , the 429 4 bolt main Cobra jets in the Torino's cyclones and mustangs, the GTE cougar with the tame version of the 427. all of these cars had power to make respectable times but they were all detuned to meet these standards so they really were not on par with Chevy and Chrysler. when these engines potential was brought out they could compete and often beat anything GM or Chrysler had.

Shelby American was on Imperial Hwy. at Los Angeles International Airport when this car was built, not on Princeton Drive in Venice. Who wrote this script?

Larry Smith ...From what I’ve read, they had both properties at that time, until the whole company moved to MI in ‘68, but yes, most of the actual production was out in the LAX hangar in ‘67.

I believe by 1965, Shelby American had moved from the little shop in Venice to the hangar on Imperial Hwy over at LAX.
The “used car lot” referred to in the other comment was actually Shelby’s Hi-Po Motors, over on Sepulveda Blvd. Shelby was forced to actually purchase a Ford dealership in South Lake Tahoe because of other Ford dealers complaining that Ford was diverting Mustang production from the San Jose (Milpitas) plant to Shelby…who wasn’t an official dealer. That’s why you’ll sometimes see the “Carroll Shelby Motors - South Lake Tahoe” license plate frames. The dealership is still there, just West of the Hwy 50/ SR 89 junction, but it’s now a Subaru dealership.

This is the baddest mustang ever built. Ford/Shelby should've offered the 427 as an option in the GT500 for real serious racers. I think in 67 they were 428 interceptors and 428 CJs in 68. The 428 however was a much better engine for everyday street driving than the race bred 427

I read that Shelby had planned a limited run of them, to compete with the 427 COPO, Yenko, Harrell and Nickey Camaros that ruled the streets. The 427 LEMANS race engine would have added thousands on the already hefty price tag of a regular Shelby GT500. Story was, this one languished on a used car lot for a long time, before an airline pilot finally bought it. Probably at a deeply discounted price...

This is 1 of a kind monster and it takes a real man to drive this car.. It’s a pieces of America history’s car.. it should belong in a museum not lock away in some rich millionaire mansion.. kids should see how innovation take it way from walking to building that 1 kind of a car..

Im still baffled with the suspension and tire size doing 170mph, and that car staying glued to the track. Theres a man right there with something to prove.
