  • The ghost ship Bannockburn, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes. What is the REAL story? Well... here it is. Those of you who are Myth Busters will probably want to see this video. Sometimes facts are as interesting as fables. For parents- TH-cam forces me to list this as "Not for kids" just so I can allow comments. Watch the video- you'll see there is NOTHING in it that will be hurtful to kids. This is all true history.

    Growing up on the shores of Lake Michigan I heard tales about another ghost ship.
    The Rouse Simmons,also known as the Chridtmas tree ship.
    She foundered in the north part of the lake.

    Great stories. Your channel reminds me of the naval history TH-cam channel, Drachinifel. Wish you success on TH-cam, we need civilian naval history like yours on here. Best of luck.

      Yes, Drac is wonderful. A font of knowledge. But Wes is a better story teller in my opinion. Both of their research is meticulous.

    Just stumbled onto your channel (subscribed) and realized I have a number of your books. Also a former airline pilot and nautical nut now exploring the Great Lakes by boat and drinking in as much Great Lakes history as I can find. Thanks for the good reads and creating your videos!

      I have one of those in the works... but I'm waiting for some custom artwork of the actual ghost. Artists don't work on a production schedule... even when you're payin' them.

    What was the purpose of employing 'ship reporters' I wonder

    • @authorwes
      @authorwes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They were used to allow managers, customers, families, other vessel men and anyone else with maritime concerns to keep track of vessel traffic and locations. Many newspapers ran a "passages" column until the late 1990s. The only time that these were interrupted was during the two world wars. Now it can all be done by way of the Internet.

    I have never this story before but I can see how two identical ships can be confused with each other. We use to Coho fish on lake Michigan and once I got to see an ore freighter with a large crane on the main deck and it was amazing how big the ship wass. Thanks for sharing this as it reminds me of those great times as a kid. We also watched the B&O car ferries coming out of Ludington.

    twin brothers I know are often reported where they are not. These men enjoy playing it up on occasion. How long did the Rosemont continue to ply the lakes after her sister ship was lost? Kinda makes the explanation easier. Thanks for the interesting yarn , Wes.

    • @authorwes
      @authorwes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      She was on the lakes until 1916 when she went to salt water due to WWI, she came back to the lakes in 1922 and then left again in 1930.

    Was the Rosement still on the lakes after the Bannockburn sank? I checked the Greenwood Namesakes series for 1900 on and don't find her listed.

    So that's the explanation; simple honest mistakes compounded by writers seeking a good tale. I've seen this happen several times on 'psychic research' or 'true haunting' websites - where a fictional story, in say an enthusiasts magazine, gets into the public domain, grows to be accepted as fact and, once started, will run for ever. Human nature - but as someone else said, we all love a good yarn. (Never let the truth get in trhe way of a good storye - Lucius Beebe)
