Star Wars: Rogue Squadron on N64, I rented that game before at Blockbuster Video. Then later, my mom did bought the game for me for my birthday😊. That was the greatest memories.

I remember once staying at my cousin’s place due to parents going on vacation; so we went to blockbuster to rent a N64 game. They literally only had Yoshi’s Story
I was a sophomore or junior in high school when the N64 hit shelves and was more all-in playing the PS1 for my primary system, so it's impact wasn't as prevalent in my life as it may be for others. That said, I did one way or another, usually through a friend who had the N64, played the core titles like Mario 64, Zelda: OoT, Goldeneye 64, Bomberman 64, etc. and maybe others here and there. Now Ocarina of Time was a great game. However, and arguably so, nostalgia rules the day for me making Zelda: A Link to the Past as the BEST to capture all elements of a Zelda title in my humble opinion! :)
I have all of those Nintendo Power magazines! I was a subscriber at the time. Fun fact: DMA Design made Space Station Silicon Valley and Grand Theft Auto! They're called Rockstar North nowadays.
@@WrestlingandFilmReviews I think it in the end probably depends on when you grew up. I mean, I grew up with the 2000s so I'm biased in that sense. But it was also a cool decade since we got to see the transition from retro to modern gaming
You gotta realize something about games back in 1999: that time period was the very threshold of the game industry's shift away from kid stuff and into the young-ish adult market. Consider that the PS1 now had an actual CD player, which really put pressure on upcoming consoles to attract attention from adults. Also consider that the arcades were drying up because we were sick of paying so much for short, single play sessions. The N64 was undeniably fun, but it carried that childish stigma with it for longer than it should have. There was one game that single-handedly broke that conception down and turned the console around by giving it a killer app. This game turned a toy that was for Mario games into a four-player competitive gaming machine that absolutely destroyed even the best arcade experiences to date. Even as late as 1999, _Goldeneye 007_ was STILL probably the toughest title to find at the rental store. The first time I saw _007_ in play was at a friend of friend's house in 1997, and everyone there was glued to it. We were all noobs except for the guy who lived there and his best buddy, who were hunting one another down like savages. The game left a mark like no other since; this was better than _Doom,_ more competitive than _Mortal Kombat,_ and the coolest thing on a screen since _Pulp Fiction._ (Even _Halo_ made a smaller splash when it arrived.) Not proud of this, but I went out and rented a copy of _007_ immediately. Still haven't returned it yet-even though it ended up costing me $170 in fines. Best game purchase ever.
There's something about the chrome on that robot in Space Station Silicon Valley, Link's sword, the Rogue Squadron medals, metal cap Mario, and so many other games that just defined the N64 graphical style for me. I think super shiny chrome needs to make a modern gaming comeback.
I'm sure people tried to keep their saves on the Ocarina of Time cartridges at rental stores. I did that with Final Fantasy III on the SNES. I would rent it every week and got as far as the opera house before some jerk rented it and saved over every save slot with a save at the first save point.
Space Station Silicon Valley is very unique and fun, but I agree it has some annoying elements in terms of control, besides having a bug that prevents 100% completion. Buck Bumble is a game that took me some time to appreciate, but in the end I was hooked enough to beat it. F-Zero X on the other hand, it was love at first sight, and I fully completed it with ALL racers. Back in the days of Blockbuster I rented Majora's mask and my brother rented ocarina Time and he couldn't even get to the first dungeon, the Deku Tree. All because he didn't realize you have to buy the deck you shield from the store and he kept talking to the wrong guy blocking the way out of the forest rather than the guy blocking the way to the Great deku tree. Interestingly, when they actually started to sell their N64 games permanently, I managed to get a copy where one of the saved files already had the biggoron sword and after that gamepak was eventually lost and I try to get a hold of it in another re-release. The whole having to race to the next NPC fustrated me more than the Water Temple ever could When it came to renting Majora's mask the very least was able to make it to the South area in Majora's mask before my rental was up. I finally got my own copy of Majora's mask in 2005 from eBay, but once it became available on the virtual console in 2009, my reason for keeping an N64 was now gone
Weird/funny tmi, I will always remember Buck Bumble on N64 because me and my brothers were playing it, the soccer mini game to be exact, when my parents called us into the kitchen to tell us they were getting divorced. This must have been 1999 or so, an obscure N64 game is burned into my memory because of that 😂😂
We're still in "those days." games are still pretty decent, the real issue is adulting. We didn't mind wasting our parents money if a game wasn't super great in the end, and if we wasted our own, most of us didn't have bills. As adults, that time is very limited, so we feel ripped off if the game isn't a masterpiece of excellence.
in 1998 i bought a rented Sega Saturn with hardcase from Blockbusters for $50 even have the print sheet of how many times it was rented out (2 times only). I got an N64 on dec 25th 99, and have never played a mario or zelda game on it lol

Erin out of all of the games mentioned the one game I remember the most is the legend of Zelda ocarina of time. I remember playing the game with my late father as a teenager. I distinctly remember going to his house after getting the game for Christmas in 1998. we played the game constantly until we beat it and got every item. As for the other games on the list, I didn’t really rent those because I stuck to what I enjoyed which were wrestling games, action, games, fighting games, and stuff like that. I also remember super Mario 64 because that was the packing game for the Nintendo 64. this brings back a lot of great memories. You did a great job as always. Keep up the amazing work. 1:30
I miss the 80s and 90s, always something to look forward to on the weekends blockbuster was a candy store to us older kids at the time thanks for the trip down memory lane Erin awesome video
This isn't a curated list. It's a list of the 5 top rentals in 1999 according to the magazine Erin looks at in the video. StarFox was a 1997 game so, it doesn't come up for any reason, nor should it as it doesn't apply.
Fun story: I worked at Blockbuster in 1999. I was on shift when it was time to eliminate the N64 section and I scooped up the Starcraft 64 copy for $4.99 and sold it for a huge benefit!
99 was also THE year for teen movies i.e. Cruel Intentions, She's All That, Varsity Blues, 10 Things, American Pie, Election etc. Never been too big on the N64 Zeldas as I always preferred the NES ones, and I liked the GC Rogue Squadrons more than the N64 one. Surprised Space Station was a popular rental on there as I think it's one of the gems on the console and F-zero X is one of my favorite games ever. Watching this just takes me back to the good ol days of 4th and 5th grade and going to Blockbuster with my buddy every Friday that we stayed at each other's houses.
I owned 3 out of the 5. I got rouge squadron for my birthday that year and I LOST MY MIND being a rebel pilot. My brother owned Zelda and f-zero on the 64 so I used to borrow all the time to take to my room when he wasn’t using it
I still have Ocarina of Time & to me it's a favorite of mine, even though I suck at it 😜🙂 The only Star Wars game I rented was Shadow of the Empire. Have not rented or even heard of the rest back then, but I would definitely have rented F-Zero X. On one of the covers it showed Clay Fighters 63 1/3, which I actually rented all the time (it was the only fighting game they had & Super Smash Bros. had not come out yet). Or maybe it was the Sculptor's Cut version? Which I had no idea about back then & even If they did have it, I would have definitely rented that one too & most likely liked it much better than the 63 1/3 version.
I have both those Clayfighter games. They both suck, hahaha.... one is a $30 game and the other is a $1000 game, but they are almost identical. The nice thing about LoZ is that even if you suck at it, you're going to beat it if you keep playing it.
I remember being the first to rent Yoshis Story on N64 from a local video game store. He made she to ask me how it was when I returned with it. Miss going to rent video games. It was such a BIG deal to pick one. You could be stuck with a dull game for a week! Ha
Renting Ocarina? How in gods name could anyone complete that over a weekend? (In a pre-TH-cam walkthrough era) All that crap about teaching the scarecrow a song and then returning in the future is SO oblique!
80s and 90s had so much choice for gaming. A golden era for sure.
Dont forget the early 2000s

I remember the 90s blockbuster very well! Nice work, Erin.
Great Video Erin! Nice work!
Awesome list. So much nostalgia!
Fun story: I worked at Blockbuster in 1999. I was on shift when it was time to eliminate the N64 section and I scooped up the Starcraft 64 copy for $4.99 and sold it for a huge benefit!
The first time I ever beat Super Mario RPG, was from multiple rentals. Crazy enough, I went on a streak where nobody was deleting my save!
n64 for life!
Great video
A lot of good movies that year no doubt. Austin Powers The Spy Who Shagged Me, Star Wars Episode 1 Phantom Menace, etc.
Love the ocarina of time easily one of the most beautiful games ever made !
Streaming Ocarina of Time would be great!
RIDIN' ON TUBES! *guitar shred*
This was the best era for Zelda! It’s never been the same since, but the classics were great too!
I owned 3 out of the 5. I got rouge squadron for my birthday that year and I LOST MY MIND being a rebel pilot. My brother owned Zelda and f-zero on the 64 so I used to borrow all the time to take to my room when he wasn’t using it
I was too busy playing the Asmik wrestling games.
I still have Ocarina of Time & to me it's a favorite of mine, even though I suck at it 😜🙂
The only Star Wars game I rented was Shadow of the Empire.
@@danbauer3669 Technically yeah, but I have a soft spot for them 😉
That's true.
@@JW666 sometimes a crappy fighting game is just what you and a friend need to do for 20 minutes!
Great video! Man the memories 🙄
I myself was a Playstation kid back then. I did love me some Zelda on the N64.
Wonderful video
Hand full of my ps2/Xbox/gamecube games still have their blockbuster stickers on them oh a bygone era
sigh, good year
I miss Blockbuster had such great memories going there.
I remember being the first to rent Yoshis Story on N64 from a local video game store. He made she to ask me how it was when I returned with it. Miss going to rent video games. It was such a BIG deal to pick one. You could be stuck with a dull game for a week! Ha
Would love to see an Erin Plays Ocarina of Time stream!
Renting Ocarina? How in gods name could anyone complete that over a weekend?
(In a pre-TH-cam walkthrough era)
All that crap about teaching the scarecrow a song and then returning in the future is SO oblique!
That’s why you rent it for several weekends. When you take it back, just tell them you wanna rent it again.
Great video thank you.
Save file for Ocarina of time on a memory card...ouch.
