The 90s was probably the wild west of controller designs. Third party ones tended to go absolutely crazy trying to stand out and look different with no thought of build quality or how well they actually played games as long as they were cheaper than the official ones that's all that mattered most of the time.

Unfortunately i have had nothing but trouble with the 8bitdo controllers. All the snes ones i got had incorrect button inputs with the dpad. The best snes controller i ever had was made by ascii and had the super famicom color scheme. This was a great video. I always like seeing controllers i never had.

I saw the OG Neo Geo controller getting some love but have to say that a decent quality arcade stick is crazy underrated for ergonomic comfort. You're not holding anything, bearing any weight or have any fingers wrapped around anything. Just a lever your left hand can manipulate however it suits, and big buttons that fingertips can press without any significant force. Bliss.

I remember that issue of Nintendo Power with all the third party SNES controllers. I was always intrigued by that single handed one that was just a control pad on one side and some small buttons elsewhere. Apparently you'd use that to game and the other hand to draw maps/etc in rpgs.

Back then before the Wii, I imagined the N64 controller as a gun or crossbow because of the Z trigger and thinking how cool it be to include the NES Zapper technology. Two generations later Nintendo comes up with the Wii controller and nunchuck.

Definitely need this to be an entire series about controllers. I really would love more content on this because there are so many cool and unique controllers out there. The memories we all have about controllers, how they feel in the hand and how the colors look to our eyes, it all harkens back to nostalgia and connects us knowing that everyone of us have our own unique and similar experiences with them. This could be a very important series to make, just for historical purposes alone and so much more. Let's go Erin!

😂I watched Pingu when I was a kid. Totally worth buying that controller, if only to show us, but yeah Nootnoot. The NeoGeo AES one is just too cool to be true, literally: the price of the system and its games was just not even possible to think about in my house. The most famous gaming magazine back in the day here in Spain called the neogeo the rolls-royce of consoles and it stuck for our generation. it really was. Great video Erin, really enjoyed it!

My top three. Third place is the NES Advantage, couldn't put it down as a kid when I got it, used it in every game. Second place, ASCII Grip for the PS1 as it was also an amazing era for JRPGs and they went hand in hand. First place was a translucent red DualShock 2 I had. I guess it was the only translucent red item I ever had and I love red, so it was always just a little cooler than the solid red ones.

Another cool thing about the Beeshu Zipper is that it originally came with an attachment that went in the d-pad to make it function as a joystick.
Another cool SNES controller was made by Asciiware that had individual switches to control the turbo speed of each button.
I like the NES Max but I wish it had a traditional d-pad instead of that circular one.

Switch Pro controller is great. Not only for Switch but also for PC. It’s my go-to controller for modern games on PC.
For retro-style games on PC, I like to use my SNES classic controller or a gold Wii classic controller pro that came with a 007 game, if I’m not mistaken. It still holds up all these years later with no issues with any of the buttons or anything.

My brothers and I would have welts on our thumbs from playing with the SNES controller (turbo controller for the SNES was the best). The N64 controller was far and away the best controller for a kid with small hands. When we got the Xbox and it came with The Duke controller (which my older brothers loved), I felt it was far too big, so I bought the s-type controller for me to use when it came out. (The Atari 2600 controller gave my hand cramps, but I never had an NES console, Wii, Gamecube, NeoGeo, CDI, 3DO, Megadrive, Mastersystem, Dreamcast, none of the Playstations, or PC controllers.)

There's an SNES, Saturn, and Playstation one and they are shaped like the console that they're for. The SNES one even has little purple power and reset switches (they are just for ascetics, but when I was a kid, I thought that they would actually work when I bought it).

I bought the Gulikit Kingkong 2 Pro Switch Controller from Amazon for $70, it's better than the real Nintendo Switch Pro controller. It has good weight, but the best feature is the hall effect thumb sticks, that will never get the dreaded drift. Retrobit makes a great Hori N64 style controller for the Switch. the n64 controller is so interesting, how it makes you choose between dpad or control stick. The idea of multiple hand positions is so intriguing. Most games are all right 3D, Mischief Makers and other stuff that use the 2D dpad is cool, but I don't know anything that uses the all left position, left hand on dpad right on stick. Could make a cool homebrew, maybe a racing game or something.

I use to have a whole bag of random controllers. Some might think they got crazy in the ‘90s but that old Atari had a few third party companies that thought they could improve on the classic design. I had this one that was designed in a way that the base could be gripped with the button lining up with the index finger. The stick would kinda click and was real solid! I think it was by Epyx and called the 500xj
Definitely would love to see more even if you don’t know a lot about them. Something about seeing different controller designs reminds me of looking for a replacement when an old one got busted

  • @MotherKojiro

I remember hating the NES Max, because that circle thing in the middle is just useless, but I eventually figured out that it works very well if you just use the black outer circle like a D-pad; it still takes a little getting used to, but I don't think I ever went back to the original after discovering that. The Joyball is interesting, because I had a similar controller for the SEGA Master System back in the '80s; my sister has it now, since she has most of my old systems. The buttons on this thing were ENORMOUS - a bit larger than a fun-size candy bar EACH - and there was a dome at the top that acted like a D-pad; you'd put your palm over it, and it would click up, down, left, right, and diagonally to move you around the screen. I don't know what this thing was called, because to date, I've never been able to even find mention of this thing online, much less pictures of it; I got it because it's a turbo controller, but the turbo controllers you usually see for the SMS don't look so weird.

That Intellivision controller you have, Erin, is from the Intellivision II model. They were a serious step downward in quality other than the fact that they were detachable. The keypad is a flat membrane and the side buttons had no sense of feedback whether you pressed it or not. The original versions had soft rubber, reactive side buttons and a keyboard membrane that had a bubble like structure over each space that "popped" with each depression. The only thing that sucks is that they're hardwired tot he console.

I don't understand when people say the N64 controller was hard to use or they don't understand it. It was never a problem for me back when I got one. Seemed very easy and intuitive on how to hold in my opinion. I had a 3DO for a little while. Did not like it at all. Quickly sold it. I remember playing Intellivision when I was like 4 and having the cards for the telephone pads. I even recall getting that one game to switch to the the other game that was hidden on the cartridge. You could make it jump to the other game by playing with the reset switch if I recall.

I actually liked the NES Max. Granted the circle was awkward and the turbo did not work on most games I played. But I quickly found that just using the ring was better.

sega Genesis still has the best & simple controller for me. Also Dreamcast has the weirdest controller for me. Still, Miss Dreamcast 😢

I really liked the n64 controllers. Maybe a bit jarring at first, but they were comfortable and functional. I also really liked the nes max, you can use the outer black ring of the d pad like a normal dpad, I never used the red part it’s weird

Erin have you seen or heard of the controller extension for the Atari 2600 that came with Omega Race? It slipped over the joystick and gave you a second button on top.
