@@ErinPlays 👍
aaaaahahahahahahaa
This game is ass! 🤣
I was wondering if you would show up to comment on that choice! Haahaa
I'm glad the famicom Splatterhouse got a shout out
A Hidden Gem I recommend, is Majou Ou (King of Demons) for Super Nintendo/Famicom. It’s basically Classic CastleVania Gameplay-Wise, but with a bit more of a Gothic Lovecraftian Aesthetic and Atmosphere. Mechanically however, you start off with a Gun, and can eventually Metamorph into several Demonic Forms. It’s a Japan Exclusive, but it has an English Patch
I've played a little bit of that! I really like it but it was kicking my ass, haha. I'll come back to it sometime.
Games mentioned (Organized by appearance in video timeline):
0:27 *Splatterhouse* (+ mentions of Wanpaku Graffiti) (Arcade + PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16)
1:12 *Zombies Ate My Neighbors* (SNES) (There exists a Reverse Inventory Cycling + Bloody Disgusting (Red Blood) hack)
2:03 *Gauntlet: Dark Legacy* (PS2, GCN, Arcade)
2:41 *Blood* (PC, 1997)
3:45 *Monster in My Pocket* (NES)
4:32 *Luigi's Mansion* (GCN)
5:05 *Demon's Crest* (SNES) (+ mentions of Gargoyle's Quest II (NES))
6:17 *Escape From Monster Manor* (3DO)
6:58 *Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde* (NES)
7:37 *Super Ghouls n' Ghosts* (SNES) (There's a Restoration patch for this one by the way)
8:35 *Nightmare on Elm Street, A* (NES)
10:02 *Brutal Doom (Project Brutality)* (PC)
10:40 *Castlevania (Series)* (NES, SNES, Mega Drive (Genesis), PS1) [AVGN would recommend the Redaction Patch for Simon's Quest + Annoyances Fix patch]
Wow, thanks for time stamping!
was looking for this thanks mate
Friday the 13th on nes is one of my spooky guilty pleasures
A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of my favorite games. I like the difficulty of it & the music is great. I usually play it every year.
Couldn't agree more!
th-cam.com/video/LGpKHkt7r-g/w-d-xo.html
Same here Untouchaable
You mean "Boo! Haunted House"?
@@ErinPlays clayfighter on snes such a classic game 🥳
I also loved the Friday the 13th NES game. I know that it has a notorious reputation, but like the Nightmare game on NES, once you get used to it, it's a lot of fun.
an alternate 13 list. Ghoul School, Haunted Halloween 85 and 86, Kid Dracula, Ninja Gaiden 1-3, My Little Pony: Story of the Blanks, the 7th guest, the 11th hour, the Clock Tower games
I'm surprised none of the Lizzie McGuire games made the list. Just thinking how they ever got made is much scarier than most of these.
Zombies Ate My Neighbors is one of the best SNES games of all time. The soundtrack is gorgeous. I love your content Erin!
Monster Party on the NES is one of my favorites! Shadowgate and Uninvited on the NES both have great atmosphere and music. Eternal Darkness on the GameCube is fantastic. Nightmare Creatures and it’s sequel on the PlayStation are both fun.
Haunted House - Atari 2600
You can't get more retro than that. ^_~
I loved that game.
You have pretty good taste. One of my favorites is Rush of Blood on PlayStation VR. It’s part rollercoaster, part haunted house and part rail shooter. And years after getting VR it still holds up as my favorite use of the tech.
That sounds fun!
@@ErinPlays also it’s probably like 5 dollars now! I recommend the Move controllers over the DualShock though.
Ayee so glad you had Gauntlet: Dark Legacy on the list.
Love playing the Gauntlet games from that era with a few friends!
Great list! Warlock for Sega Genesis is one of my favorite horror games. I loved the horror movie it was based on, too.
Panorama cotton, while not a horror game rod itself, is a good example of a Halloween themed retro game
Nice list!! I always play on Halloween Friday the 13th & Monster party!
I REALLY want to love Monster Party but I just can't. I like the atmosphere and sprites a lot, but the game play pisses me off to the point it's not fun and it bums me out lol.
So happy you mentioned the Splatterhouse series! Splatterhouse 3 is my favorite Halloween themed game to play!
I’ve been playing Zombies Ate My Neighbors around Halloween time for the past few years. The farthest I’ve gotten thus far is the snake level (level 20). At this rate, I estimate I’ll have it beat by October 2030. Wish me luck!
Brutal Doom & Project Brutality are 2 different mods for the original Doom. Both are bloody, loud, violent slaughterfests but I would give the edge to PB.
I don’t know why, but your reading of the line, “Number 4! (Deep voice)....Blood” cracked me up! It’s so on brand with the spooky vibe 😈
Ha! I think my brain was referencing this old TH-cam video and I just went with it: th-cam.com/video/1tcR19y7GPM/w-d-xo.html
@@ErinPlays Haha random subconscious references are the best 🤣
I think 1997 being awesome is just a universal thing for anyone of age at the time. 'Twas a great year for me, too. Ah, those late 90s.
Good list. A few I like are...
Resident Evil 1, the Clocktower series, 8 Eyes, Nightmare Creatures.
“It’s called Demon’s Crest because it’s about Toothpaste!” - Erin
😂😂
You have created a great community that's more about your great personality that defines you instead of being under the umbrella of cinemas
5:45 interesting map design. Earliest I remember doing that kind of thing was DBZ: Legacy of Goku II and Buu's Fury. I like it. Way cooler than a simple screen with tiles or something like that.
Road to Fiddler's Green freaked out my nieces and nephew. It is definitely worth a play if you've never played it. Phantasmagoria is another game totally worth a play. It's a lot of puzzle solving. Very fun.
Really cool video. Really liked this and the 10 awesome monsters of Castlevania Symphony of the Night video. Thank you.
Thank you very much! I'm so glad you liked the SOTN video too. These actually were my favorite videos I've done this year I think :)
Great list, impeccable taste, super enjoyable video! My shout for a spooky game is X-Multiply, the arcade shooter made by Irem in 1989. It's pretty hardcore but also really fun, and has you shrunk to tiny proportions and injected into a sick old man, with view to eradicating the alien virus plague he's infested with. It does freaky body horror really well with lots of grotesque set pieces. The Saturn port is part of a double pack with the classic original Image Fight, but it's X-Multiply I come back to all the time.
Thank you very much for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed it! And oh wow, I just looked that game up and I totally need to play it. I'll have to look at the Saturn version too. Thanks for the rec!
There's a bunch of spooky games for Sega Genesis: Decap Attack, Chakan, Devil's Crush, & Wolfchild, to name a few. I love the dark grittiness of the Genesis!
@Ben DC4L --- Same here!
Castlevina bloodline
Dude, Devil's Crush was my shit!
Wow totally forgot about Blood!! I've just bought it on steam hehe Love the channel :-)
Awesome!:) And thanks!
Escape from Monster Manor reminds me so much of a 90s PC game called Nitemare 3D I used to play a ton of. It was part of the Hugo series of adventure games.
I remember the Hugo series, think it was a trilogy, those were some good classic point and click games, glad that game type has started coming back.
I have 2 favorites from the 90's that I never hear anyone talk about anymore... first is a PC game called The Dark Eye, which is a point and click adventure where you experience Edgar Allen Poe stories from the POV of different characters, and it's narrated by William S Burroughs! Second is a PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 game called Devil's Crush, which is basically Satanic Pinball lol... great video as always! Can't wait for the next one!
I love Castlevania Bloodlines, Splatterhouse and Ghouls'n Ghosts. I haven't played some of them. I will do it. Great pieces of advice, E. Greetings!!! 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
One of my all-time fave scary themed games is Venture on the ColecoVision. Fantastic music and cool looking monsters for an early 80’s release.
Castlevania Chronicles is tough, but still a great game! Rondo of Blood is good, too!
I agree!
This is the last list I would have expected to see Project Brutality on. It started off as a Brutal Doom submod, and has now pretty much become a separate mod in its own right.
Demons's Crest!!! Love that game. I was super stoked when I found out it was actually the third game starring Firebrand, so I picked up Gargoyle's Quest I & II right away and... well, at least his walk cycle is adorable!
Great video! Great list!
Two of my favorite action/horror spooky games that don't get enough appreciation:
NIGHTMARE CREATURES & SOUL OF THE SAMURAI
I'm one day too late for Halloween, but never too late for an @Erin Plays video -- they're always good.
Gauntlet..awesome game! But the rest of your selections.. *chef's kiss*
I love your video Erin
I remember playing blood a long time ago, running towards the severed head of the enemy to kick it into the air and then stabbing it with a pitchfork before it hits the ground.
Monster party on nes was one of my favorites.
Phew... thought Castlevania wasn't gonna make your list for a second! Castlevania is my favorite series.
Blood is one of the greatest FPS games ever made. It creates a very scary and spooky atmosphere. Also, there are many horror movie references throughout the game.
One of favorites Monster Party. Great atmosphere There is a James and Mike Mondays episode or two about is on Cinemassacre.
My favorite spooky games not mentioned are...
NES-
Shadowgate
Uninvited
SNES-
Warlock
Eye of the Beholder
Dungeon Master
Wizardry V: Heart of Maelstrom
N64-
Shadowgate 64 (It's not as good as the first one but it has a pretty good soundtrack and has the most spookiest intro themes.)
PC-
Eye of the Beholder 2 and 3 (these sequels never came out on the SNES)
PS2-
Nocturne
Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2
Devil Summoner
Persona 3 FES
Kuon
Rule of Rose
Obscure
Gamecube-
Resident Evil 4
Monster Lab
Painkiller was a good one too. Nothing like staking monsters to walls with a giant stake shooting crossbow
Loved the video glad you kept Zombies ate my Neighbors on the list since you and Mike got burnt out on it a couple of nights ago lol it’s still one of my all time faves!!!
looks like all the time u took editing paid off, great video erin
Thank you!
All the modern Gauntlet games are SO MUCH FUN for couch co-op and overlooked all the time! It's criminal!!
Luigi’s Mansion is the game series I’ve played the most on this list, but I have tried a few Castlevania games sense you make them look so fun.
I grew up with the Genesis version of Zombies Ate My Neighbors. After all these years, I've still never finished it.
Castlevania: I'm partial to Symphony of the Night and the Super NES games.
I laughed at the toothpaste joke 😄
Fantastic list. I personally think mother 3 is a great game for Halloween too. It has zombies ghosts and a ton of other spooky elements.
Maniac Mansion for the NES, is one of my favorite, and often over-looked, spooky halloween- type games😁
Hooray for the Blood reference!
Damn, Erin calls out Brutal Doom! 😮
Some of my favorite underrated: Sweet Home (Famicom), Laplace No Ma (Super Famicom), Clock Tower (Super Famicom), Corpse Party (PC98 or PSP remake), and CarnEvil (arcade).
Awesome video. And yeaaah, that AVGN reference is great!!!!!! Hugs Erin.
I always play thorough Symphony of the Night in October. Gets me in the spooky mood.
My local arcade used to have the Gauntlet Dark Legacy coin-op. Really wasn’t a fan of the 3-D perspective as it felt weird controlling a 3-D game with an 8-way joystick, but it was still fun to play with friends and I did have some fun with it on my own. Just make sure you got a metric fuckload of quarters handy if your local arcade doesn’t do the “pay up front, play all day” or “swipe card” system........
Nice to see Blood get some more recognition! Would highly recommend checking out the fan-made Death Wish campaign too. The maps are amazing!
I remember seeing Demon's Crest in....I think it was about 1997?.... and being blown away by the graphics. I was about 7 y.o. and had played a lot of great games in my life already, (including Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts) but that game was just so ahead of its time. There are a few SNES games like that that made me realize how epic the Super Nintendo is as a gaming system. Still my favorite console
Another one that caught my attention instantly as well as scared the total crap out of me playing it alone.....Super Metroid :))
thank you for making this video. the music from Zombies Ate My Neighbors is so much better than it has any right to be.
Good video 👍, since Luigi’s Mansion made this list I would highly recommend Ghostbusters Remastered on the PS4
(or other platforms).
Zombies ate my neighbors and the original Resident evil 2 are so much fun to play during halloween.
You mentioned some of my favorites but I also like to play Darkstalkers, Resident Evil 1 remake and Costume Quest.
One NES game Nobody Ever mentions is Ghoul School. It’s a great Halloween game to play around this time of year. It’s kinda confusing at first but the atmosphere and music is just weird and off putting. I recommend giving it a try
Ah, I always forget about that game! I'll have to try it out again and see what I think, thanks!
Happy Halloween Erin 🎃
Same to you! 👻
My favorites are the Phantasmagoria series. Sadly they were only released on the PC. They are the old point and click games. The sequel to the first game is "Puzzles Of The Flesh". Both are very scary games but lots of fun.
I played Blood and I beat it, but it is very hard. I really like the Splatterhouse series. And I try once the original Castlevania and I couldn´t beat it, I guess I have to give it another shot!
Cool video, Erin! :)
Great video 👍🏾I think I heard Mike screaming in the background.."FAAAAAARRRRRKKKKK" 🤣👍🏾
Great to see some spooky love for Ghouls 'n Ghosts/Ghosts 'n Goblins!!! For anyone interested in a very awesome "spiritual successor" to Ghouls 'n Ghosts, check out Maximo 1-2 by Capcom on PS2. It's GnG in everything but name, with a modern 3D platformer approach. Totally underrated, well-made, spooky as hell, and hard as balls.
5:36 Toothpaste? You can pump? WHAAA?!
Ha! I'm glad someone caught that ad. I was looking for pictures of Crest toothpaste and I saw it and was like "oh yeah....that's the one." XD
Fun suggestions! I wasn't aware of Blood so that's now on my list to try.
I applaud you for including a Build PC Classic.
Silent Hill 1 is quite scary. I remember not being scared of RE2 when it came out, but I got playing Silent Hill and it creeped me out.
4 creeped me out
Brutal doom looks sick definitely gonna check it out thanks cool video
giant baby in Zombies at my Neighbors is nightmare fuel.
it's THE WORST!
I'm glad you mentioned blood i hope you stream it some day
I'd like to! Games like that can get me dizzy though, so I need to take a lot of breaks which makes me hesitant to live stream it. But I'll probably do it anyway lol.
@@ErinPlays I've been trying to play dusk myself and I keep getting dizzy too so I know what its like
I been running Halloween games all month keep the momentum going Erin!! 🎃🎃🎃
Happy Halloween to you too Erin.
This is a great mix of games, many of which I haven't had the opportunity to play through myself yet. I'm always hoping to find a copy of Nightmare on Elm Street. Maybe some day! Nice work :)
I highly recommend Nightmare on Elm Street! I think you'd like it. I bought it like 3 years ago but someone mentioned the other day how it's going up in price (but that seems to be the case with any NES game, lol.) And thanks for stopping by!
Great list! Thank you.
This was fun diverse list Erin. I started playing Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow again. I think it's one of the more accessible metroidvania installments in the series. The Silent Hill series and Metroid series are both quite spooky. People don't think of Metroid as horror but each game has horror elements in it. Mother Brain is straight up body horror. And Metroid Fusion is one of the scariest action games I've ever played. Happy Halloween Erin!
Excellent list. Zombies ate my neighbors would top it for me, and demons crest.
Another less heard of game is Halloween 84 and 85, both on steam. Awesome games. And of course Costume Quest.
Hi Erin, love you and mike so much happy halloween for you guys form Iraq 🇮🇶❤
Thank you! Happy Halloween to you too :D
Thanks for sharing, Erin. I haven't played console in awhile. Some of these titles are going on a list to play.
Hope you enjoy it!
Those games look so cool and I've played some of it all the time when I was younger. Great video game content! 😉
Thank you 👍
I found your channel on here and I like what I'm seeing so far. I've followed you on various social media and on Twitch. Lol@Demon's Crest toothpaste...
Awesome! Thank you!
Great list but here is a game i might recommend clock tower 3 and friday the 13th on the nes
Man everyone uploading Halloween videos today, avgn, civvie, stop skeletons and now Erin so awesome
tis the season!
Forgot how many spooky NES games there were. Happy Halloween!
I have a nostalgic soft spot for De. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Such a great list! I couldn't agree with you more a nightmare on elm st. I've mastered that game. All I would have left is a no hit run. I can get through the first 2 stages but the 3rd is where the difficulty gets turned up. Someday 🎃
Thanks! I still need to beat it but I've gotten very close. I need to practice it again and get back up to where I was. It's a great game. Good luck with a no hit run!
Nightmare Creatures on PS1. One of the best Halloween/creepy games. Should've been on here.
Blood was awesome; great list of off-the wall weapons. I never finished a single episode, though, because I kept getting lost in the labyrinthine levels. Demon's Crest is easily one of my favorite SNES games of all time! I also agree that Super Ghouls & Ghosts is the best of the classic Makaimura titles, but I'd also recommend trying Ghouls & Ghosts for the SEGA Master System; it's similar to the Genesis version, but you have these weird hidden areas that give you a choice of 3 upgrades to your boots (either speed or jump height; I don't remember), armor (gives you a life bar!), weapon, and helmet (magic). The upgrades are permanent, and even though you'll have to play through at least twice (as usual), it takes the edge off a bit; its pretty different from anything else in the series.
For my money, South Park had it right: Halloween is about costumes and candy. So, this time of year, my game of choice - even if not exactly retro - is Costume Quest.
I loved Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, I started as a jester and unlocked the Jackel and commenced destroying all who crossed my path.
Great list Erin!
Thank you!! 😊
