Power Steering Rack to Manual Steering Rack Conversion (EK Civic)

  • Threw in a manual steering rack to replace the existing power steering rack that looked leaky with bad tie rod ends and the wrong power steering pump. I paid $200 for the manual rack and $30 for the EG steering column joint. Honestly probably would have preferred to keep power steering but the price for a used power rack and pump seemed to be significantly more expensive locally.

    Plastic Spacer, Rubber Gasket, & Grommet (that was made for the rack)

      I think the one I have is from a 1996 ek civic cx hatchback, but Im not sure exactly since its second hand. Im assuming all ek manual racks are the same. For the plastic spacer, rubber gasket, and grommet you can find them based on this diagram:

    Whats benefits changing it form power to non power ?

    • @AnthonyMo
      @AnthonyMo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I benefited in terms of cost compared to replacing the power steering pump and power steering rack (local prices). You can find on fourms that people claim manual steering is more responsive but I did it purely based on cost. Otherwise, I probably wouldve retained power steering. I also noticed from other videos of turbo setups using the space where the pump is so that could be another reason to go manual rack (more space and little weight savings).

      @@AnthonyMo You also benefit from less drag on the engine from not running the pump constantly, meaning a little more power to the wheels and better fuel efficiency.

    Was the conversion worth it?

    • @AnthonyMo
      @AnthonyMo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can't really say if it's worth it or not for the driving experience. It was worth it for me in the sense that it was the cheapest way for me to fix my power steering rack problems (leak, tie rod ends, etc...)

      @@AnthonyMo I am in the process of doing a reversal setup. A Manuel to power steering instead since Manuel can get a little hectic. I just prefer a little more convenient than trying to fight the damn steering wheel.

    • @AnthonyMo
      @AnthonyMo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JohnnieIsBored I agree, I would defintely keep the power steering if I was certain on keeping the car NA. It just makes sense not having to fight the wheel just to park the car. Because Im keeping the option of turboing the car open, I decided to just get rid of it because I see lots of hondas removing it to make room for the turbo. Made more sense for me because no point in putting money into fixing the rack just to remove it later down the line
