    The International Space Station is the largest man made object in space. It was built in pieces and then launched into space and assembled in orbit. In this video we'll go over some background about the station and then walk through each module in the order that it was assembled.
    This animation took a long time to make - enjoy and please share your comments with me!

    Just a little note, it wasn’t just the US and other countries deciding the build a space station. It was a little more complicated. The Japanese had been planning on having what we now know as Kibo on Freedom, but the Europeans had been planning on launching their own small space station, but it was cut and reduced to only a single pressurized module. This became the Columbus module. However, the ISS wouldn’t have happened without the Russians’ failure to launch a direct replacement for Mir. Mir-2 and Space Station freedom were both struggling for funds, so the Clinton administration approached Russia to combine the two struggling projects into one International Space Station.

    • @sebastiannolte1201
      @sebastiannolte1201 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      "It's not out of the atmosphere, but it is in space. "
      Although I understand what you want to say, it doesn't make much sense. With space we usually mean "beyond the atmosphere", it usually should mean the same. But as the atmosphere becomes thinner fluenlty it is not possible to say where the atmosphere ends (and it doesn't matter, maybe we should just stop using the word "space", only brings misconceptions for many people). So every definition is arbitrary. The 100 km definition was made originally to say not where the atmosphere ends, but where "aviation" ends. But of course there is still atmosphere So I guess ou would at least count the thermosphere as the atmosphere? And to you "out of the atmosphere" means "out of the thermosphere"? Of course it is also impossible to say where exactly that is. And a few years ago scientists find hydrogen molecules that can count as part of the atmosphere even beyond the moon.
      Actually it is the first time that I see somebody who uses different definitions for "space" and "out of the atmosphere".

    so funny story, I often leave youtube on in the background while I build lego (i like the background noise). I was building the lego ideas version and the shuffle of one of my playlists took me to this video. And I was like "well that's nice". on the plus side I was able to identify the different parts of the station while I built it.
    I have seen the video before btw, it was just a nice rewatch experince

    The company I worked for in the 1990s designed the main power contactors for switching power between the solar panels, batteries, and space station load. The company I worked for in the 1990s designed the main power contactors for switching power between the solar panels, batteries, and space station loads.
    I was lucky enough to be one of the design engineers on a very small team in Santa Barbara that made that contribution. It was thrilling work. The power system from the solar panels and the accompanying batteries is I believe a 155 V DC system. It required new technology to make lightweight contactors that could work in space. That’s what we did.
    Thanks again, Steve
