- Toyota, one the most famous names in the world of motorsport. With a history of iconic models in the field of endurance series, WRC and even Formula 1, it can boast a heritage of successes in its long lasting life.
The Japanese brand always tried to reach the limit for the development of their racing cars, producing extreme prototypes that always pushed speed to its boundaries.
One time however in the 70s, Toyota went too far: What they created was a literal racing monster, a prototype years ahead of its time, a car so fast that it could dominate every single race. But that wasn’t the reason why this car was well known.
The car was too fast, so fast it became too dangerous to drive. A 1000 BHP monster that ultimately caused the death of one of the prominent Toyota drivers of the time, writing one of the saddest chapters in the history of the Japanese manufacturer.
A car that carries vivid memories and strong emotions, a dream ended by its own tragic tale.
This is the story of the fastest car of the 70s, the car so fast, it was too dangerous to drive.

The 917/30 was probably the fastest. I mean, they are said to have peaked at 1500hp! This was a couple of years later tho, and it benefited greatly from race experience and development of the platform.
The Toyota 7, and to a lesser extent the Nissan r383, were definitely pioneering trailblazers in turbocharging this massive engines for monstrous power and stuffing them in tiny featherweight cars.
Could you please do an episode on the Toyota 88C-V.

The Porsche 917/30 Can AM for sure.
Hard to tell. The Turbopanzer came a couple of years after the Toyota 7 and had more brute power, but I think the 7 was much lighter? Still, could you imagine the two of them side-by-side on a Cam-Am grid? Wow.
It is hard to remember that in the 70's we had SO very little safety designed into the cars.
Worse in the 50s and 60s. Hell watxh 1930s indy crashes

Absolutely insane how insane some of the cars were in the 70's. Until lotus came and fixed the "Death Trap" curse put onto these cars. Only the chap 2j is the one i would really call "a somewhat tamed" in this series. Even then, that thing is pretty much a death washing machine. Good video!

I agree that the 70s were one of the craziest period in terms of experimentation and crazy formulas! We were discussing it on another comment and it's impressive to believe how fast the technology was advancing at the time

I'd heard of the car before but never knew where it was raced or what its story was. Having heard of its specs and performance, i saw it as the pinnacle of japanese motorsport, no matter the rest of the 80s and 90s legends. But hearing its full story, from the drawing board to the passion behind the project and the tragedies behind it, every single moment kept me on edge and hoping for a silver lining to the project. Your voice was no less than perfect to tell the story of the 7, it felt like i was listening to a story from someone who was as involved and passionate about the project until the last second, and the music and clips only added to the effect. Amazing video and a wonderful explanation to this story. Very much looking forward to the other stories of triumph and tragedy in the world of motorsport.

Story time: the Toyota 7 was my entire friend group's grind vehicle in Gran Turismo 5 back at highschool, we had one guy with a wheel and pedal setup and he would share the car around as no one else can beat the challenge for it. We took turns grinding out the Konica Minolta CV prototype with it. Good times.

On the topic of cars being too extreme for their time - a video on both the Peugeot 905 Evo1b and the Toyota TS010 would be a neat idea. Because back in 1992, those cars were faster than some F1 cars (compare WSC 1992 lap times with 1992 F1 lap times in Magny Cours).
You are so right! The TS010 especially, despite not having a great success like the 905, was one of the most aggressive aerodynamic approach seen in a car of that kind so far.
I mean 905 was nothing less, but the TS010 had this kind of charm... I don't know, it's special you know
Group B monsters is another big one. Like those things were often nearing as fast as track cars. Like Lancia Delta S4, 890 kg, tubular frame, carbon fibre and kevlar silhuette body, 550 HP twin charged engine, all wheel drive,.
This all down narrow mountain roads at times.
Oh and apparently 550 hp was the "this engine is supposed to last" tune. On bench pushed to max with higher boosting it could make 1000 hp.
Some of the end of stage and during race week end interviews are telling from that era. World best rally drivers from all around the world going, publicly, to camera: This is insane. Stuff like "how are you looking forward to next stage? I'm already fully exhausted, we shall see". This from seasoned rally driver used to long stages and touring. Just after few stages going "my mind is mush, my back is mush, my arms are mush"... oh by the way and still two stages to go today. "How was the stage? I don't remember anything about it". This few minutes after coming to finish line, since that was how jarring it was. Too many corners too fast, too many jumps too fast.
Split second mistake didn't mean just losing time and race position, it meant at minimum serious injury, likely even death.
"We are all exhausted. This isn't racing any more. This is something else, i don't know what. However bosses want us to drive, so we drive. This will not end well." They were right.
Again this from seasoned professional people who knew "speaking ill of the car, team or the brand is a career: no, no".

"In 1981, McLaren MP4/1 first used carbon fiber monocoque. By 1986, the first bicycle carbon fiber frame was produced by Kestrel."
Which made it such a big deal. It was among one of the first applications of carbon fiber, which shows the level the car was produced. They used the most expensive and recently come to market processes to make the car happen.
If anyone can narrate the legendary icons of the yester-years in racing, it's you. The Toyota seven's history was truelly one of the best.

There were no such things as racing cars in the 19th century.
I first learned of this car from the PlayStation game Gran Turismo. Racing in the 1960’s and 1970’s was absolutely crazy. As the envelope was pushed even the tracks had to change. The Mulsane got 2 chicanes, Monza was literally completely redesigned, and Nurburgring full circuit virtually disappeared from racing. Perhaps you could do a video on some of the famous tracks and how they had to implement changes.

Yep, those years (With the exception of Group B which developed more in the 80s) were some of the craziest in motorsport for that. Luckily, in the next generations, safety became an important factor to take into consideration 🙏
I was a great Can Am fan and saw many races. They said of the rules: 4 wheels, 1 engine and 2 seats. Otherwise, "run what you brung". The Chapparal vacuum cleaner car seemed to even break the one engine rule.

Can am was one of the most absurd classes in racing ever so its pretty understandable that things like that could unfortunately happen.
less than 700 kg and over 800 bhp, tiny lightweight wedges with coffètables for wings.
I mean the Toyota 7 was probably the definition of no control, too much power/torque for a light car that can barely keeps the road with its primitive downforce.

Well it can work on modern cars,too bad they didnt know what is active aero or traction control etc.
I watched many, many Can Am races - we made any track within 12 hours drive of Toronto, Canada. The cars were surreal lightweight monsters with huge engines and absolutely minimal rules - literal ground shakers. It will forever be my favourite racing series. The Bruce and Denny Show forever!
And hockey pucks for tires, they were the limiting factor.

Wow, I had never heard of this car or it’s history. You did an excellent job telling it’s story. That was a dangerous time in motor racing. The pace of technological development and the beasts that were created was both exciting and sadly sometimes tragic. Would love to hear more like this from you. Super job!

I was in a sports car club in mid and late 1960s and we were the Grid Crew at many SCCA races in SoCal..
Riverside International Raceway had all the categories from Minis to Cobras, and then Group 7
Unlimited Class which was amazing to watch..The CanAm Series had top drivers and teams from all over the world..McClaren, Gurney, Chaparral, it was racing heaven on that course with straights and esses and elevation changes..

I remember this car vivid from Gran Turismo, and it remains 1 of my favorite cars, along the Chaparrel. But i believe this car should be kept in the games and the story be known about its dark history, for only that these 2 heroes will be remembered.

I watched the various Chapparals, including the vacuum cleaner car, at many Can Am races through the prime of that series - always great cars beautifully engineered. The sound of the vacuum cleaner car was unreal - you got the thunderous V8 with the little snowmobile engine screaming away on top of all that. Truly a unique car.
800-1000hp is mighty impressive today, 1969(nice) it was insanity.
The scariest part about cars like this would probably be the onslaught of snap-oversteer due to inherently imbalanced inertial frontal lift while going through high speed corners. Imagine feeling like a proper weapon of a driver on the straights only to brake hard for a turn, turn in, ease into the throttle to power out and then to have the front lift slightly while the rear pushes down, and then to lose steering feel from the front, lift slightly, redirect the front wheels, feel the inertial weight shift, then power down hard again in time coupled with steering correction so as to offset the snap whilst you feel immense rear tire scrub. You’d have to have balls of steel!
Cars of this era had immense rear downforce but little was known about frontal downforce or lift, so an effort was made to widen the rear tires substantially to make up for it, but often times all this did was increase the quickness in which the front changed direction during imbalanced snap!

I have heard of this car before somewhere throughout all of my years of reading and learning about Motorsports and different cars and engines but I never knew the history behind it like this ,well put together story even though it was a tragic event I didn't understand much about the car either a car weighing less than 1500 lb with that kind of horsepower would have had to be a monster and only great drivers could drive it sadly one lost his life. Overall good job good story.

Heyyy, i know! We i've been really busy so far with university, work and many other things and failed to keep an eye on this channel.
So far it's a disgrace because i really wanted to keep making videos, but the time required, the mental resources and everything else is just too much.
Btw i'm Italian and currently a student at the European Institute of Design, but i'm not the voice in the video, that's another friend of mine, i'm the video editor and main founder of the channel lol.
