People like Mick Hucknall prove that real soul 'aint got no colour. This is a beautiful cover and it pays every respect to the brilliant original by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes.
This song is a perfect example as to why the '80s were so connected by music. There were no barriers, there were no categories you HAD to fall into, there were no walls to hold you in. If you had the guts to do what you wanted, you were 100% free to do it.
PLEASE I WANT IT BACK... MY GRANDCHILDREN AND OF THE YOUNG ONES NEED TO GROW UP WITH JUST THE NORMAL MILE STONES AND NOT ALL THESE NON CUMMUNICATING CRAPS........😢
The soul group Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes recorded this when I was still a kid. I love their version. After listening to this version I have to give it a 10+. Thanks for introducing me to Simply Red. 😊
One of the relatively rare cases, in which the cover outshines the original, the same goes for "Money too tight to mention", in which Simply Red's version is emphatically better!
Herald Melvin and the Blue Notes (featuring Teddy Pendergrass) did this in the early 70's. But I absolutely love Simply Red's version. Thanks for the reaction
I have been watching you for about a month now. I am a 60 year old woman and I can say after listening to you that I feel you Mother would be very proud of her son. The direction you are going and the love and care you express for you wife and children is inspiring. The world needs more of that very badly now. As a military daughter, wife and mother I have seen a lot of our country and the world. We are a wonderful country and we must try to keep it that way. Keep going forward and being an inspiration. God bless you and your family.
Hucknall, born at Saint Mary's Hospital, Manchester, on 8 June 1960 was an only child. His mother abandoned the family when he was three; the upheaval caused by this event inspired him to write "Holding Back the Years", which would become one of Simply Red's biggest and best-known hits. He was brought up in Denton[7] by his father, Reginald (1935-2009) a barber in Stockport.According to Hucknall he had a happy childhood until the age of 10, when he began to clash with his father "because there was no woman to act as referee"
In the back of my head, I hear the announcer at the skating rink saying, "couples skate only." And when this song or one like it comes on you try and find that one girl you got a crush on and hold hands with her while you skate
According to Wikipedia, the lead singer of Simply Red, Mick Hucknall, is of Irish ancestry from his mother, whose father was from County Offaly, Ireland; his father was from Manchester, England.
His maternal grandfather and paternal grandmother were Irish, and his maternal grandmother was an Ashkenazi Jew. Not sure about his paternal grandfather, but he claims that a DNA test showed his ancestry is Irish, Basque (an isolated population in Spain), and Ashkenazi.
@@eryksun Culture wise, Judaism follows the maternal lineage. Therefore if Mother's Mom's Mom was Jewish, so is he. However, his children would not be unless he had them in Temple, to choose it for themselves.
I became a instant life long fan of this group the first time i heard this song. Still a favorite. Can listen to it over and over. Thank you for making my day.
Soul comes from the heart, the gut, not the color of the skin. I'm sure you know the term 'blue-eyed soul.' Sure, it might be easy for a singer to really project an emotion or mood while going through hard times because they're feeling it at the moment. But to be able to pull that soul up months or years later, or night after night, that's the drive, the dedication, the professionalism all feeding the soul. This is an amazing performance.
One of the rare times when both the original and cover are both great. You must check out Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. “The love I lost” “Bad luck” “Don’t leave me this way” and his duet with Whitney Houston “Hold me” & many more.
I agree! The version by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes has been one of my favorite songs since 1972, so I was prepared to be critical when Simply Red released their version in 1989. But I love it too!!
The original is by Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, both versions - incredible. You should also listen to their funkier songs like 'Money's Too Tight to Mention'
People who say other people have no soul are often the ones who have no soul, in the experience of this redhead. Simply Red's take on The Stylistics' 1974 hit single You Make Me Feel Brand New is pretty darned good too, definitely worth a listen.
Simply Red are one of the biggest bands in British history. They are always on the radio and have had a hat full of number one hit singles here. Check out Money's too tight to mention, A new flame and For your babies. All fantastic songs.
The first song I heard from Simply Red was Moneys too tight to mention , in about 1984. Made me buy his album and the rest is History. Take a listen, great song, but more upbeat x
Great reaction, BP! My wife and I loved Simply Red. I went out and purchased his music everytim a new song came out. Mick has an amazing, soulful voice!
I knew you would love this one! This has been covered many times by many singers I personally like his the best! If you check out the original there is a Soul Train performance! I think you will enjoy their fashion choices 😂 ❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
🇬🇧 Simply Red/Mick Hucknall has a HUGE catalogue of 'hits' for you to react to. "Stars" "Money's Too Tight To Mention" & my favourite, "Fairground", all GREAT songs. 🎼🎶❤️
Teddy Pendergrass , Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes are the original artists. With backgrounds by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, Carl Helm, and Bunny Sigler. Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff are the composers.
I love that you go in blind. A lot of the music you are reacting to it the way we all reacted to it when we first heard it. We didn’t have the internet to go find the history of it. We just fell in love with a lot of these songs because it spoke to us and said what we couldn’t always say ourselves. Or it just made us feel.
This is how old I am LOL this was originally recorded by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes from Philly back in the 70s so this is now being covered by Simply Red still on the absolutely terrific song
Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes version is the best. I remember belting it out in my bedroom (I was 12, voice breaking all over the place) listening to 208 Radio Luxembourg, the medium wave reception fading in and out as it tried to cross the North Sea (I was brought up in the north-east of England, miles from the Tony Prince's Royal Duchy of Luxembourg). Followed by "Me & Mrs Jones" - perfect. 🙂

Just glad you gave this song a chance…there were a lot of not good things which happened in the 80’s. But with any decade or generation….great music exists! Please continue your 80’s + musical journey 🎶
I saw them live in the late 80’s early 90’s…. OMG they were FANBLOODYTASTIC!!!! That ginger ninja was like a pocket rocket, like an eveready battery bunny jumping, singing and moving all over the stage. 3 hours later he was still moving, singing and dancing. We once played this song over the John Carpenter movie with Roddy Piper, They Live. Oh how we laughed
