    Check out my new Instagram post (@tomdavis) with him rubbing elbows with another dog. This is a classic case of leash reactivity guys. In my hands, he doesn't make a peep. As soon as the owner gets the leash he explodes!

      Hey! I was wondering, can you do some good training tips with deaf dogs! I have a soon to be 2 year old chihuahua who we have trouble doing training, leash interactions (he tends to try to chase and bark at anything that moves) and getting his attention during the times he focuses, he does also have issues with chasing our bunnies and cats (trying to play with the cats). Any help would be great!

      @UpstateCanineAcademy I have a 3 yr old 200 lb live stock guardian breed mix that goes into attack mode at the sight of another dog until he gets to investigate that dog and establish he's the boss and then he's chill. With strangers he will try to eat them if there is any kind of fear or intimidation shown by the person. he has bitten one guy and nipped many others. his behavior is rubbing off on our 1 yr old 110 lb LSG/ husky mix rescue who is very sweet but very under socialized and so copies big bros crazy behavior. we messed up raising our 3 yr old and don't want to have history repeated for our children's sake who he used to viciously guard me from. he acts out most around me "protecting" me because I wasn't a good leader to him as a puppy and I'm struggling on how to change my relationship with him. I don't see him as a fearful dog, I think his dna tells him to guard and protect but we're not on a farm and he's going to end up biting some other fool who approaches unwelcome and get put down. How do we contact the facility and set up training either virtually or however??

      @@tomdavisofficial *edited-sorry for commenting same thing on 2 other vids but it wasn't letting me tag you hahaha so here it is... AGAIN!! 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️🤣*
      @Upstate Canine Academy .. I've just watched a few of your videos and I'm just wondering is there any chance you can do a video on how to deal with separation anxiety please, and tag me in it?? My Saluki came to me at 9 month old (roughly) I've had I'm nearing 3 year now and he still barks like crazy and cries when I leave the house. I have a child so ive gotta feed us and go shoppin. I'm at a loss. I start a new job on the 2nd of July too and I'm worried about leaving him. My life cant be revolved around the dog anymore, as much as I love him, I've enough of putting my life on hold. He was wearing a collar that beeps and vibrates but I think he's got used to it so I've took it off him as he's still going crazy. Worst part is I can't leave him in the house as hes cost me 2 new carpets already so he has the Outhouse which is seperated by my kitchen door and he has the garden when I go out so he has shelter, food and water and the run of the garden just for the simple fact he's not rippin my house apart. I don't mean he eats everything or anything like that but obvs those first times I left him he scratched the carpets up trying to get out the door to go upstairs. I can't take much more and I definitely don't want to get rid of him. When he came to me I knew he had it bad that's why I took him the first chance I got, with permission of course, before anyone thinks I've pinched him🤣 but from the beginning hes struggled being left and he barks and cries, gets himself proper stressed, hence how I've been glued to my house for nearly 3 year. I got him before pandemic hit in '19 but I obviously went out before then and he was exactly the same but clearly the pandemic hasn't helped. My life has been shopping and coming home and even since UK lifted restrictions I'm still in same position as when I got him!! I really need some help!!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

    Tom, can you make a video about how and when to notice the build? I can imagine a video of you and your trainers giving a leash correction to different dogs just at the right time. Most of us don’t notice it until the big explosion. It would be great to have parts of the video in slow motion, and you narrating how the dog is building. I think that would be extremely beneficial to improve our handling as dog owners.

    • @Ashley-lx9wr
      @Ashley-lx9wr ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Here was one of Tom's recent videos where they do slow motion playback that shows the dog building with no correction. After you watch that, you'll probably see the same in this video because the dog locks his focus in almost the same way. It's a matter of 1-2 seconds before they boil over.

      to add onto the other comment, basically just watch the body language. once they lock eyes on their trigger u can see their body tense up, they’ll stop panting if they were previously, hackles (fur all down their spine) might stand up, some dogs tails like mine will stand up, some get vocal even if it’s just a small whine or growl etc. if u watch the video the other person linked u will notice some of those things

    I have a 1 yr old Berner who has become very overprotective and leash reactive. Its our fault.. we didn't socialize him much over the winter and we didn't do daily training with him. He ended up biting me, my husband, and my mom. We were told to put him down. Well, for the past month we have been using Tom's training techniques and he still has a few quirks we have to keep working on but its like a different dog! We can actually walk him around other people and dogs and he doesn't even look at cars when they go by! We are SO beyond thankful for Tom!! He helped us save our dog! No bad dogs!! ❤🐾

    This video describes my dog perfectly. She has no issue lunging at the end of the prong when she's locked on a dog but I can see where my timing is off and now I understand that I need to redirect her into a back and forth heel to keep her engaged on me in the split seconds BEFORE she lunges and pulls. We have been using leave it and I admit her reactions have gone from a 9/10 to a 5/10, I feel strongly that she is trying her best to fight her emotions because she knows what I want from her and that's why she's no longer barking and going off the rails, but she still struggles with pulling towards dogs. Weirdly though it's not every single dog, some she is totally unbothered by and others seem to set her off. I am going to practice this on our walk today because there are some houses that she knows there are dogs in the yard and she starts to pull as we walk up to them. Thank you for helping me feel less alone and more secure in my handling and giving my girl the best chance to build confidence and lower her stress levels.

    My daughter has a similar issue with her dog. I was able to find a training center close by that worked with them and boy! what a difference. My daughter was beating herself up about not being able to train her dog. My answer was to ask her if she could knit. She doesn't know how so she said no. I said good, cause I wanted her to knit me an Irish knit pullover in a week. The fact is she is NOT a trainer and my question made her realize that she was not a failure in training her dog! With the training and practice, both are much more relaxed which is making my daughter more confident in her ability to control her dog. Win Win for all!

Dobies are an amazing breed but, like many working line dogs, can dominate and be too much to handle if not given calm, consistent leadership. I’m so grateful I found Tom. His method and approach have been extremely effective. No stress, yelling or competing for power or authority. It’s love for your dog with balanced and fair discipline. All else falls into place harmoniously. Thank you, thank you, Tom!! 🙏🏼

    I empathize with this owner so much! With a very leash reactive dog I feel the pressure of getting it right every time when working with my dog. I know she is anxious and the leash is a big part of that. The other thing I've learned is she finds calm in structure. Much like you were telling her here, giving the dog a command "heel" provided the structure that he needed from the distractions. I'm working on this now with my Staffy and the progress has been really good! Still some work to do.

    In many of your videos, the repetitive problem is the poor communication from the handler. You often have to remind them to praise good behavior. That’s why the puppies don’t know what good behavior is. Your observations of both is amazing, enabling you to prevent bad behaviors from happening. Your work is definitely raising the quality of their lives. Great job, Tom!

    I have a very reactive 1 year old Australian Cattle mix with similar behaviors to the dog from this video. As a petite dog owner I am no longer able to safely take him on a walk because I fear he will overpower me. When we go out he reacts towards every dog and person that we encounter even if they are 20ft away! We have tried many different methods but once his behavior escalates nothing we do or say works. I definitely think we are part of the problem and we are not correcting the behavior on time! It can get extremely discouraging but I am so glad this dog owner and her pup got the help they needed!

We have a BC and GSD, super smart and everyone says oh I want that.... And I caution these kinds aren't for everyone. They require a bit extra. So glad you incorporated that. Tough dogs are OK if you are willing to put in the work and get good help!!! NO BAD DOGS. I have a circus at my house. We have a BC a GSD and a Blue Bay Shepherd and a CAT... I don’t have a dog but I can’t stop watching these videos. I really want one but don’t trust myself to give them all the care and attention they need. Hopefully in the future I can. I have a kid and I read that growing up with pets can help emotional development and it would probably be nice to have company since they are an only child. But again, feels selfish to want a pups when I don’t know if I could devote all the time needed to provide proper care. Full time working single mom.

I've been doing rehabilitation and rescue and retraining rescues since I was 15 at 65 it is my dream to finally do fulltime training you have been a God send of information and options for those hard cases...that all too many trainers give up on and then often owners frustrated want to euthanize...Not in my world...I have yet to find a hopeless case my last year was spent with a dog no one had approached for 3 yrs he had been thrown out at 8 mths to outdoor kennel no toys no interatction except huge buckets of food once a day he developed cage rage to the level I had never seen in all my years owner left dog behind when he left and suggested EUTHANASIA It has been a year he is now playing with children he hadn't been allowed near since 8 mths old (for playing too rough 3 yrs before) now he plays ball with them ...plays water tag with them and is reintegrated into home. He has the biggest heart has been on a diet and can even bow and walk backwards leave it... crouch walk and do figure eight leg routines that came after his diet he was 40 lbs over weight when we started. He is now loving life and so many times when I felt I was in over my head I would binge watch your videos till I felt a little insight into the problem and try again voila "THE HAPPY DOG...THAT NO ONE TRUSTED! I wish I had someone who could help me like this. My anxiety is so bad. I had originally adopted my dog to turn himself to train him to be my service dog but I don’t have the funds to do so and he’s reactive and protective against people and especially other dogs. I’ve tried using videos like these to gain some understanding and knowledge in what to do to make things better but it feels like nothing I do works because he feels so protective of me when I’m having anxiety…which is every time I go out…

      @bbycherub2420 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I went through the same thing. So I had to rehome her and buy a well bred dog instead that has a sound temperament. Because my rescue was so protective she attacked two kids and could not be a service dog legally. If you don't want to rehome the dog, you could go to a professional trainer that knows what they're doing whenever you get the funds.

      You need to work on your anxiety tho! It's your energy and lack of leadership that causes the dog to react and feel the need to protect you.....They dont follow weak energy!!.....Doesnt matter what dog or what its breeding is...All dogs need Leadership ,exercise and boundaries ....Watch all Tom's videos over and over again! ..Maybe volunteer to walk dogs at your shelter..to learn how to walk a dog properly..You can do it
      .but you need to be POSITIVE and get a different mindset .. Dogs react to our energy!!....leaders need to be positive.. CALM and Assertive !!!!

    @Upstate Canine Academy .. I've just watched a few of your videos and I'm just wondering is there any chance you can do a video on how to deal with separation anxiety please, and tag me in it?? My Saluki came to me at 9 month old (roughly) I've had him nearing 3 year now and he still barks like crazy and cries when I leave the house.

    We would like to see a video of helping a mini Australian shepherd with severe fears. Doesn't seem leash reactive, but afraid of noises and darkness. Planes. Cars (carsick), fireworks. Sneezing (getting better). If it's a noise, he's afraid of it. He shakes, cowers, hides, stiffens, drools, will not relax for anything. When a noise occurs while on leash, he lowers himself and claws his way home. Just wonder if there's a way to help Shadow. We tried ecollar training but anxiety escalated.
    Also, what does "structure " mean? Routine? Limits? A schedule?
    Thank you. :)

    Hi Tom! By getting to the point of using an E-collar and prong collar, with lots of training, would you ever expect to make enough progress where you could go back to just a slip collar?

    • @lenagoodwin8223
      @lenagoodwin8223 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally Tom speaks of the goal being not to stop wearing equipment/tools but for you to not use them as frequently. That way when you need it it's there.
      Like a seatbelt. Most people wear it everytime they get in a car, but they certainly don't 'use' it everytime and if they do there's a problem.
      But in short, yes. If your obedience is strong/proofed enough you could walk your dog on anything you want.

    I’ve been looking through your videos to find one about dogs that resource guard the owner. She does not resource guard toys or food. Only me. My pup is very happy to follow commands, has excellent recall, stay, wait, off, etc. Not great on leash unless she’s tired. She enjoys scent work and fetch in the house. Excellent with other dogs her size. Not very reactive to people off leash at the dog park. She practices avoidance mostly. She still doesn’t trust some men though. But when she is in the car with me she growls at the drive thru and anyone approaching the vehicle. She is pretty calm if I’m not in the car with her. She will lunge very suddenly and ankle nip at people I’m speaking to when she’s sitting quietly on leash next to me or if I pass a neighbor on a path she lunges. Pretty sure she’s resource guarding ME because inside the apartment she will try to lay across my chest if she hears a noise outside that she’s unsure of, so I’d love to see a video for resolving that. She just turned one year old and is not yet fixed. I know I’m the problem, not her. She will adjust if I get educated.

    NEED HELP, long explanation but ill try to get straight to the point to my question. got my dog kauai 4 years ago at 1.5 yrs old from safe haven. they knew nothing about her past, wasnt fully sure on age and i’m not sure if what breed they have her down as is fully correct (german shephard/chow chow). they said she didn’t get along with animals as much and people. me and her clicked right way and she loves people. and loved other animals, but that was short lived although there and my brothers dog winston(pit bull) became best friends instantly and still are and she’s also currently best friends with our bunny billy although she did attempt to kill him at first. anyway, she used to play with random dogs whenever and it was fun, one day at petco, a chihuahua snapped at her and that changed everything. she became very very reactive and anxious and that’s when i started losing control and our relationship in general but i didn’t think much of it then. after that, in a span of 1 year, 4 times she attacked other dogs when prior to that we were literally just playing fetch or walking on the beach. her bites are never fatal and puncture but they sure as hell sound like it. she sees, points, and charges. only reactive when she can see them, not hear them. as of right now, the biggest issue i truly can’t manage yet is her being more reactive to a football/soccer ball/ basketball being played with literally 100 or 200+ ft away compared to being able to listen to me when there’s a dog 30 ft away (although i guarantee that if the leash wasn’t there, she’d pounce on it). but it’s a process and we’re working on it right now. my main concern is her reactive behavior with any ball. we work on her leaving it when we’re in a controlled environment; just me, my girlfriend and kauai and she does great, very obedient but sometimes slips up but it’s okay. the second we’re outside and we’re not in training mode and she sees and/or hears another ball, she locks onto it instantly. starts lunging forward, whining and screeching almost like she’s in red zone but over a ball. just the other day, we were atleast 100 ft away of kids throwing a football and you could see the build up in her lead to red zone status and she was pulling away not caring about anything i had to say or do and i almost lost the leash, i decided to just turn around and start running encouraging her to run with me and she did but she couldn’t help but trying to look back at the ball even when she couldn’t see it. once we were far enough i did some obedience and she listened but it took a bit for her to calm down. it almost seems unmanageable. could my dog possibly have OCD or something of that nature? i’m more confident in a dog confrontation situation than a ball situation. bc she has slipped once and she starts jumping trying to get the ball, pushing the people and almost bites their hand because she is so laser focused on the ball. i just need to what i can do for my pups, her life is so important to me and i want to be able to take her to parks, beach’s and whatnot having full confidence that she can remain calm.

    • @ky6417
      @ky6417 ปีที่แล้ว

      and the reason i’m not as concerned about her seeing another dog is because i have endless amounts of resources and whatnot to figure how i can manage that and turn her current behaviors into a positive behavior but i find nothing about the issue with any and all balls and our training for her reactive dog behavior isn’t translating to her reactive ball behavior. i also just got the herm sprenger prong collar and safety clip so we’ve yet to train with that

    I've never laughed so hard watching one of your videos...when you said "for the love of God just come with me" I laughed til I had tears rolling down my cheeks. Maybe it was the instant replay of me with one of my Sheps trying to get a gopher turtle on the back acreage...no amount of begging was better than the dang slow A$$ highly protected state protected endangered turtle. My last words when I got him to let the turtle go was "sweet Jesus get us home before he runs across ANOTHER turtle". Prayer worked that time for me. Now I know early in the am and between 5-6:30 we are NOT going on the back of the property because it's turtle time 🤣. Not sure we're getting over that, although I did get BOTH sheps to stop playing tug of war with one by yelling HOUSE!! Oh wait...my error, never yelled house just leave it and I guess a turtle on its back waving it's arms frantically wasn't really leave it material 🤣
