  • Training a dog that's protective over things or has resource guarding issues can be very dangerous. In this dog training video, Tom Davis breaks down how to work with a Blue Heeler on possession aggression using the remote collar to help teach the dog the appropriate thing to do.

      Would you suggest going from using the e-collar as a correction to just stimulation if the dogs been trained already. Or would that be too confusing to the dog?

      I learn something every time I watch one of Tom’s videos. E-Collar is what I dream of having my dog trained with one day soon. Bella is a lot like my girls personality and intelligence.

      @@samwdavis I am all for balanced training, but your suggestion is just cruel. How about you put it on yourself and try to do it for 10 seconds. Even with your suggestion the dog might not even realize what caused it and it not resolve the issue the first time. No need to torture an animal to get a result. That is the difference of disciplining a child and beating the shit out of them and putting them in the hospital to make a point.

    What I like about Tom is that rather than just saying “punish the dog when they make a mistake.” He also says “Redirect another behavior.” I tell my clients when we’re unlearning a behavior, call it “don’t do that, do this”. I feel like a lot of owners go straight to punishment without giving any kind of other direction and the dog is just like “what else do you want me to do?”. Unlearn the negative habit and instead develop a healthier habit

    I have had working Heelers for decades. My first heeler was a grandson of the first pair brought to the US. As everyone who owns one of these dogs knows, they all are extremely protective of their vehicle, whether or not the owner is in the vehicle. None of our heelers was ever on a lead, but just ignored every dog and every person but us. These dogs are intelligent, but can be stubborn because of their working drive. They must have a job! It is my belief that these dogs should not be just a pet, they should be in an environment that allows them to express their working ability. As a P.S. I have found the females are much more reactive than the males.

      My hubby and my second dog together was a red heeler. We also had a corgi but she was just so easy going. I learned that Zak needed more in depth training and a kinda job to make sure he wasn't going to get into trouble.. I did agility and at home tasks. And then he taught himself to be a seizure alert dog for my brother.. I loved him so so much ..

I love seeing a heeler on your channel because I have a heeler mix and even though my dog and this dog are reactive in different situations, I am learning a lot just by Tom’s commentary on the breed itself and what we can do as owners to be better for such a high energy working breed! Thanks for this video guys!

    I can't say it enough. In our line of "work" with our dogs, which is hunting, e-collars are lifesavers. I would never take my dog hunting without their e-collars. Too bad they get such a bad reputation. You're doing amazing work to take away the stigma around all these amazing training tools 🥰!

    I don’t know any trainer who understands dogs better than Tom. I love how he mixes positive reinforcement with a little punish, and what’s more important, how well he makes owners to understand their own dogs, and how succesfully he teaches owners. If every dog had an owner like him, we would live in a much better world.

    Thank you for your content it has helped me a lot with training and accomplishing things I didn't know I could do. My own dog is a 4-year-old bernadoodle he's very smart, friendly but he gets overstimulated easily epically in a new environment, and meeting new dogs your training techniques on how to regain the dog's attention, stopping the escalating and then de-escalating if I didn't catch it quick enough have been very helpful. My second technical dog is my boyfriend's 3-year-old german shepherd (Mylo). My boyfriend got Mylo when he was a year old and he already had some issues that came with him such as jumping, anxiety, not being able to walk on a leash at all, and just being a bulldozer of a guy. My boyfriend began working full time and as a full-time student, I moved virtual and had time to go and take care of mylo during the day and began training him. To train him I had to make the 5 min walk to the park so he could get a release of pent-up energy from being created. This was impossible at first he dragged me, jumped on me, knocked me down and it was just a very bad situation and not safe for either me or Mylo. We've always raised our dogs since puppyhood so I've never experienced this I was at a loss because the puppy training I know did not work for him. So I turned to youtube found you and learned proper equipment usage, corrections, and just how to not get frustrated. It took a lot of patience, consistency and time abut when we finally made it to the park without incident I damn near cried. After that, it became a new world we could go for long walks and I even taught mylo how to retrieve and scent things out. My boyfriend and I took him out a while ago to go waterfowl hunting and he swam to retrieve a goose I was stunned. We still have work to do on his jumping but he's a completely different happier dog and I know this was a lot just wanted to share how your content has made a difference in my life and my two dogs.

    • @chelsieshepherd5288
      @chelsieshepherd5288 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ng-ht1vxthanks for the feed back yes consistency is key he no longer jumps on me or my boyfriend anymore but other around him will let him get away with it even if they are asked to not to. The Turning my back on him is the main technique I’ve used because if knee him or get physical it seems to amp him up a bit more or he thinks it’s okay time. I’ve started using the e collar when other people are around him so I still have control of the situation with idviduals who don’t want to correct him for the behavior.
