  • Should you purchase genuine Canon Speedlites for your dSLR or Mirrorless Camera? I was there many many years ago making that choice but times have changed. Whether based on price, feature performance set, in this video I share my thoughts as a professional wedding and portrait photographer. Godox V1, AD200 and AD600Pro are mentioned.

      We're sticking close to the womb of CPS, and Canon RT lights. Have added a couple Canon EL-1's to merge with our fleet of five (first-year) 600RT's and seven (not a typo) 430RTIII's. Have been burned multiple times on the job by Godox, ProFoto, Jimbei, Youngnuo, Phottix, PocketWizard, and (I'm an old fart, too) ... Norman. The only non-Canon brand of lighting gear that didn't have us cursing on the job was Quantum (Q Flashes and the old RadioSlaves). The Canon stuff always works and is well-supported.

    • @RickyCheung

      The old school stuff. Quantum’s, loved those, they always worked. Profotos had issues too. I love love canon built but now I’m shootings both photo/vid I can’t justify those EL-1. I’m sure they are good but man they want $$$ for them. Wow!! That is one hell of a fleet. Thanks for your sharing your use case.

      @@RickyCheung Dude, the EL-1's are so well-built and the battery's unreal. If the 600RT's have lasted 6+ years, these EL-1 feel like they will go for 10. Other than reliability/support (and stronger radio interference rejection), the thing that keeps us in Canon is the marvelous little 430RT. It's a full-function trigger with a little flash when you need one for that zillion times a year in a dark room when someone asks, "Hey, will you take our picture?" Turn the little onboard flash on, fold out the bounce panel and take the photo. When done, shut the on-board flash off and go back to the Strobist routine. Need a little fill for the Hora Chair? You got it! Small, lightweight, flexible, reliable. No sluggish shooting with a giant 600RT (or EL-1) mounted on top. If Canon brings out a pro-build, red-ring, Li-Ion version of the 430RT this year (rumored to be the EL-10), they'll find a welcoming home here.

    • @RickyCheung
      @RickyCheung  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks you hopping on the channel. You can get a Godox receiver (I think the Flashpoint R2 Mark II TTL) the one that has a hotshot on top of it to mount the 600rt on top but in a event type of environment I found it too cumbersome (top heavy, and weird to carry abouts). For the price and ease of just one system I might consider just fully switching but only a suggestion in my book. Good luck with your setup

    Hi
    I am currently travelling with a 50kg setup and a friend just recommended me to use the round godax flash instead. He told me i could just put them in my softboxes and have them on slave mode and they would have enough power to compare with a studio flash on minimum power. Do you have experience with it?

    • @RickyCheung
      @RickyCheung  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The v1 is a 76w flash head. It can certainly fill a softbox at full power but it highly depends on your ambient and surrounding light. For example you won’t be able to overpower sunlight but in a controlled indoor or shadow environment I believe you can light a subject with a v1 in softbox. Remember you’ll be using a lot of watts in a small flash as you are going through a softbox.

  • @whiterock1865
    @whiterock1865 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah I tend to go from the philosophy that if you’re a professional making money you absolutely have to know it’s gonna work that it’s worth investing and more expensive equipment but really the only flash I would consider for canon that made by Canon is the EL one which I actually just purchased because I want the full integration that it offers with the R5. I also have Godox and a Profoto b10s. I invested in the Profoto because I do a lot of shoots with other photographers who use Profoto for having that parity of gear just makes it easier to work together but I also figured out how to make it so that I can actually use my Profoto with the godox flashes. I also use a V1 which I’m replacing with the EL1 just because I do shoot higher volume and I know the V1 will shut down after about 30-35 full-power flashes.

    • @RickyCheung
      @RickyCheung  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 30-35 full power flashes consistently I wouldn’t even use any brand of speedlight in that case I’d go for a much bigger light regardless of brand I feel.

  • @scotthamilton1054
    @scotthamilton1054 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    He hit the nail on the head. The industry requires photogs to do both video and still and now equipment budgets have to accommodate both. This is why these inexpensive products are hitting the market. The profit margins are simply not there anymore. Imagine shooting weddings in the 90’s? 4-5k was the going rate. It got the client 12-5 rolls of shot medium format film with proofs. This type of assignment would require about 250.00 worth of film / processing and proofs. Now for the same money 20 years later the client gets 4k still pics (from 2 shooters) color graded and a 3 minute edited video. If your not processing and editing yourself your hiring someone to do that. It’s become a downward spiral and guess what? The tech advancements have made the craft painfully easy so more people are doing it and buying into the gear because it’s cheaper. So yea,, equipment manufactures are pricing accordingly BUT because of the marketplace dynamics, this isn’t necessarily a good thing.

    • @RickyCheung
      @RickyCheung  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I think we need to be the master of all or at least good at both photo/video. The market is demanding both skill sets in one and technology is allowing it indeed.

      Honestly it depends. The difference as far as light from round head to traditional is minimal. But with the round head there seems to be more support for attachment and is more simple in that sense. If you don’t plan to use them the traditional head of the 860 is great smaller form factor as a plus.

    I thought I needed to stay in the Canon ecosystem for Speedlites and strobes, so I bought into the ORLIT system (same as Jinbei but sold by Adorama).
    ORLIT made Canon-compatible Speedlites (really cheap though) and also Canon-compatible strobes. This appealed to me as I could use the same Canon-compatible system when combining Speedlites and strobes, so I bought completely into the ORLIT system.
    The ORLIT Speedlites were really cheap and I had a few failures. The strobes were really good, except for one small strobe I brought to a wedding and had triggering problems. I was working with another wedding photographer who said he dumped all his Canon Speedlites and switched completely over to Godox/Flashpoint. I had already been looking at Godox when I transitioned my studio strobes from Alien Bees to Einsteins, and then ORLIT. But for some reason I thought I needed to be Canon-compatible because sometimes I combine strobes and Speedlites when on location. After talking with this other photographer I was convinced that it's not important to be Canon-compatible, so I quickly sold all my ORLIT gear and got completely on-board with Godox/Flashpoint. Another thing that was holding me back is that I had a poor experience with the Flashpoint brand (a cheap umbrella adapter) and wanted to avoid Flashpoint. When I learned that Flashpoint is simply Adorama's rebranded version of Godox (but with a better warranty/replacement) I was all in.
    I used to have the Canon EX580 and EX580II Speedlites (two of each) and ended up selling those as well. I love the battery life of the LithiumION batteries in the Godox Speedlites. That was another thing that convinced me to switch over. I also sold all my rechargeable AA batteries and several chargers, nice not to have to deal with that mess any longer! I now have six Godox/Flashpoint Speedlites (rectangle head) and three of the round-head (two Flashpoint and one Godox).
    The nice thing about the Godox/Flashpoint system (compared to ORLIT) is that a Canon and any other (insert brand name here: Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Fuji) camera can also trigger the same Speedlite or strobe. With ORLIT the strobe itself had to be switched into a particular camera mode, so once it was set for Canon, only Canon triggers would function.
    Zero regrets switching from Canon to Godox/Flashpoint.
    EXCEPT FOR ONE ISSUE - The 2.4GHz R2 trigger system is unreliable, I've had so many misfires that I always bring the "older" 433MHz R1 trigger system because it simply works every time. I feel like 2.4GHz is a very congested frequency and a poor choice for reliability (which is also why professionals don't use 2.4GHz for wireless mics). The older (rectangle) Godox Speedlites allow me to plug in the R1 receiver, as do the AD 200 units and the AD600 units. But the newer round-head Speedlites do not, neither does the AD1200 monster strobe (which I don't even own).
    I found it odd that ProFoto triggers don't actually display the power output on the trigger. There are so many things that Godox offers that even the most expensive alternatives don't have.
    7:42 - THANKS FOR THAT TIP! Now I'm going to use this (at least on my Speedlites that still have a functioning ring, that part is poorly manufactured and doesn't hold up well).
    Here's my entire Speedlite history (at least up to 2020):

      Thanks for sharing your results with other brands. As for 2.4ghz, have you tried changing the default channels/ids. I have success so far, no misfires and on point even with soo many other godox users in the same ballroom. Gotta “love” the battery life, I’m on 2-3 events without rushing back to charge up or have a stack of AAs. Especially those back-to-back weddings. Again, thanks for sharing.

      @JaredRibic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RickyCheung - Yeah, I've tried using the ID, scanning for clear channels, etc. I have several (at least six) triggers as well as three AD600 Pro and three AD200 units and have problems quite often with misfires. I usually attempt it because of convenience, but to save embarrassment in front of a client I'll switch to the 433MHz R1 system.
      It looks like the new Godox monster strobe might have the ability to accept the 433MHz receiver: www.adorama.com/fplfx2400k2.html

    Have you had trouble using the new V860III on Canon cameras...on the R6 this flash is giving me a big headache, the flash is very inconsistent, also interfering with camera behavior and poping out of the camera, the brand new flash poped out 3 times on the floor with the hot shoe locked...I send an e-mail to Godox but they don't have an answer....with the X Pro to fire Ad600 Pro I don't have any problem.

    • @RickyCheung
      @RickyCheung  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Diego, if you recently got it. definitely try to have it returned or exchanged for another unit. my 2nd V1 has interference issues and I know it was the flash because I had another to test out the wireless abilities. So with cheaper flashes like the godox the quality control is probably not in par with canon and the big names. So test out the gear as soon as you get it. What you are describing doesn't sound right. I never had my godox pop off the hotshoe and I grab my camera from the hotshoe base too. I know I shouldn't but I do out of habit.

      True. I have yet to see some sort of LED focus assist now into this mirrrorless world. Apart from useless TTL Godox V1 sucks if you need to shoot at full power. It just needs to much time to recharge. You can't also loch the head so if you use heavy MagMog modifiers like me you might get a little annoyed with the fack that flash head collapses itself.
