Old Disney games are like comfort food to me.
Castle of Illusion on SMS in particular is like that for me. Actually, the same could be said for a lot of SMS and early (as in pre Sonic) Genesis games for me.
Mike...you should totally try Marvel Land on the Genesis. It has some jank, but it’s charming/bizarre as hell and it wouldn’t surprise me if it *was* a Master System game at some point because of the aesthetics.

I owned Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion for Genesis. I never knew that there was a Land of Illusion.
Have you played the Castle of Illusion Remastered on PS3/360/Steam? Its a beautiful rendition. Definitely check it out.

I was a kid growing up outside of Philly in the early 90s, and I feel like I never even heard of the Master System until after I graduated high school maybe. Definitely missed out on Wonder Boy and better versions of the Game Gear Sonic games.

This game is probably the best out of the three "Castle of Illusion" series games on the Master System. In fact, I was probably more impressed with this game than the Genesis version of Castle of Illusion, or the 2010s PC remake. The Master System ones, especially, borrow a lot of gameplay ideas from popular NES games, but I find them to be very competent games and I wish I had known of them when I had the system as a kid.
There is also legend of illusion on game gear. The master system version is a Brazil exclusive.
World of illusion is my favorite, because my 8yr old nephew and I beat it together recently on my Sega Genesis.

I honestly think Magical Quest SNES is the strongest, and the second one is pretty good too. Awesome music and atmosphere, fair difficulty, great graphics and an amazing end boss fight with Pete

Maybe I'm partial because I owned it as a kid, but Magical Quest is my favorite off the list of Mickey Mouse games you have at the beginning of the video...

1:45 altho castle of ilusin came in 1990 and it has the multiple doors as in Mario world too.
Problem with G&G Resurrection is the flash animation style -- same reason the newer Shantae games don't look as good as their pixelated predecessors.

Beat castle of illusion on my younger brother's game gear. Fun game.
Not only were entire level designs ripped strait from SMW, whole section layouts were the exact pattern of certain levels of SMW, that is lazy Disney.

World of Ilusion is a really a great game. The time you played it was 2 players, maybe give another chance in single player, its pretty fun and has good controls once you get used to them.

Mike, you should try Legend of Illusion on Master System if not already done. It's a masterpiece, and one of the most unknown Mickey Mouse games for some reason.

Game gear port was decent as well. Beat it on my younger brother's game gear. I remember sonic spinball, Sonic 1 and 2, Shinobi GG, this garfield we picked up in a USA outlet mall (we live in canada). That one ren and stimpy title was hard as hell. I think the 3rd or 4th level had muddy mud skipper. Hidden bags of kitty litter for health. I remember geting to the last act in Sonic 1 in the car and my ma told me to turn off the title. Was so pissed that it didn't have battery backup unlike super mario land 2: six golden coins. Oh that garfeild title was were he got sucked into a TV and had to beat a glitch. Good graphics and gameplay was decent. Different theme levels.

This game looks pretty decent to me. I'll check it out on my Genesis everdrive. My favorite Mickey game is Magical Quest SNES. You highlighted it at the beginning and I nerded out a little. I didn't find any stream of you playing it, and if you have plans.. I eagerly await!

I did Magical Quest 3 recently and couldn't stand it! Nice graphics nice music but controls and character movement were way too clunky and stiff for me. I'm gonna have to try some of the others because so far my experience of Mickey games is not good but I know there's good ones out there 😂
You said, when reviewing Axiom Verge, that you do not see it as a rip off of Metroid. How then, can you say, that this is a ripoff of Mario? At least this Mickey Mouse game only does this on certain levels whereas Axiom Verge is, on every level, ripping Metroid off left and right.
Yeah and this game isn't a rip off of Mario at all, it's a rip off of Ducktales. The gameplay is exactly the same, the level and art designs are the same, even things like the treasure boxes are the same.
SMS had a catalogue of great games, sad it was not appreciated in most regions.
