@ 8:00 "just the idea that art is possible" . that's exactly it 😭You go your whole life not even thinking of art as an option, as something that is conceivable for you. You are aware that art exists, but your brain doesn't even begin to process it as something you yourself could be doing. And then you become an adult and are like wait, this is something *I* could be doing, something *I* love doing. I can make my own choices now and can go after this thing that all my life wasn't even in my field of view. As a child of immigrants who had zero role models working in the arts I really resonated with Torkan's story, thank you for posting this!
Thank you so much for this platform. I’ve really been considering auditioning for drama school but I’ve been battling my limiting beliefs about having absolutely no acting experience what’s so ever and my age. Thank you so much Torkan for pursuing your passion and sharing your story. I’m truly inspired my this video. 💛
@walda6446 that's awesome. Thank you for sharing. What you're feeling is common. We should talk. Why not go for it? Even if it doesn't turn out the way you expect, it's a valuable experience. Glad you found the videos helpful. Email me and I'm happy to discuss more about where you're at and provide guidance on your best next steps. anthony@howtogintodramaschool.com
Torkan, I appreciate you sharing your experience being raised in an immigrant household and how that affected your own path to loving acting and eventually deciding to go to grad school to nurture that. Our family's opinion on what success looks like can either limit us by making us conform and in the end, be unhappy, or it can give us fuel to prove to ourselves that we can be happy doing what we love (even if it scares our parents along the way). You're right that they mean well, but I'm so glad you chose the latter. I'm turning 30 myself this year, and I was born in the USA to parents who immigrated here from Northwest Africa (Mauritania) to seek asylum. I also happen to be Muslim. Everything you said has resonated deeply with me. Thank you so much, Torkan! This interview was fantastic. And congrats on your acceptance to UCSD! You deserve so much praise, my friend! Sala
@ella_chysom We are inspired too! Torkan is outstanding. Are you looking to apply to drama school? If so, I'm happy to learn more about your story. Email me - anthony@howtogetintodramaschool.com
