I was about to give up, thinking someone may have taken him to a vet, or squished him somewhere, and there he was, totally defenceless and all curled in a ball, and freezing cold.
He is SO tiny, I’m not surprised he was hard to find all curled up in the leaves. Every once in a while you get one that weaponizes their poo it seems, but he is awfully cute. I’m glad he had enough strength in him to make it.🥂🖤🇨🇦
His poo is settling, however Maggie still cops it. We have 3 who have weaponised poo at the moment. Gin Fizz is queen of the "little bit more" brigade. She waits about 30 seconds and you think she's finished, then she squeezes out just a little bit more. TinTin is learning to control his squirts and, for me, nicely waits till there's free air under his butt. For Maggie he just wallows in it.
@@Megabattie LOL for Maggie it is a gift, she rarely gets away from a feeding unmarked. It’s nice of Tintin to wait when it’s you…maybe Maggie just relaxes them a little too much.🖤🇨🇦
Oh, how tiny he is, and is his belly not quite furry yet? Or do I just need to clean my glasses? Big THANK YOU to the sharp-eyed MOP who saw him, and another thank you to whatever fates made sure no one stepped on him. *Biggest* thanks to Meg for her selfless determination, Maggie for her adorable mothering, and Auntie Jack for completing her little family.
They don't usually have a fully furred belly until they're about 4 weeks old. In our care they don't need to grow their belly fur quickly because they're kept warm enough; the bare belly is because skin to skin transfers heat better so the young pup's bare skin in mum's wingpit is warm and toasty, but as they get bigger and stretch and interact with the world more, they need their belly fur to thermoregulate
It's a tricky balance between babies keeping themselves warm with fur, or from mum. It also depends on the temperature of the area; the babies in far north Queensland tend to get belly fur earlier because the ambient temperature is a lot higher earlier in the year. They can be left alone for a few hours every night while mumbat feeds herself without the weight of the baby using up more calories to fuel the flight to find food. They come back a few times during the night to feed baby and locate baby by calling for it. @@gsdalpha1358
@@Megabattie Fascinating how they adapt! Wish I could grow fur right now as we have a snow storm in-coming, the first of many, I'm afraid. Hopefully my little bats are all tucked in and peacefully hibernating. Thank you for patiently sharing your wealth of knowledge.
Same thought crossed my mind when Meg picked him up from the grass. Thank God no one had trodden on him! Doesn't bear thinking about. Bless his little heart he looked so tiny and helpless, all huddled up against the cold, like he was still in the womb. I would have had to bundle him up in my coat or some other piece of clothing till rescue came (being very careful not to touch him, obviously..
If you're on your way to work, in a tearing hurry, and you call it in, sometimes it's the best and only option for you. No boxes to put over him. I didn't get there quickly either; it was over an hour before I could rescue him.
Oh My Word - When you first picked him up, I swear my heart stopped, I was sure he was dead! Bless him, he's SO tiny - and all huddled up, in the foetal position. Makes perfect sense he's premature. You really are an exceptional rescuer Meg. You are totally focused, single-minded and determined to find the battie in need. And so of course, you do. Bravo! What a transformation, from that cold, exhausted, motherless little sausage, about to give up on life, to the bright eyed and happy bubba swinging happily from Aunt Maggie's fingers. And what impressive boy-bits he's packing - put me in mind of Mr Meep and his unfeasibly large 'Coconuts'! 🥥🥥
Hitchcock's boy bits are huge because he has bilateral hernias. We're feeding him more frequently now with his bum up in the air all the time, and even toileting him bum up. In the wild he wouldn't have to drink enough milk to get him to the next feed; he's has to do that in care though or he'd starve or fail to thrive. In the wild he wouldn't ever have a fat full belly, but would drink on demand. Fat bellies push against weaknesses in the inguinal or femoral canals. The testes descend from the abdomen through the inguinal canal into their external position adjacent to the penis. It leaves a weakness in the abdominal wall, which when you have a fat full belly is subject to pressure from the abdominal contents. We feed them slightly head down. Mumbat would feed them in the position they choose, but head down and fairly vertical. In the wild they would not ever have gravity pressure pushing loops of bowel out the inguinal canal which is, at this stage, quite loose, having allowed for the testes to descend over a period of time. But in care they get a fat belly which increases intra-abdominal pressure and a less vertical hanging position which would, on mumbat, decrease the pressure in their abdomen and take pressure off the wall where the canal exits the abdomen.
I aged him at 4 days, but he was born prematurely; the 4 day ageing was because he had a healed umbilical cord, (the cord drops off on day 3), so he had to have been born at least 4 days previously, but he must have been a premature birth because he's still barely at chart weight and size, and it's a week later.
He seems like he'll be OK. He has a few issues, including a hernia and a bit of butt prolapse, but with reasonable care he should get over this.@@somatgw
