      I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
      There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
      You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
      There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.
      I put up videos from Mandi and my rescue and care videos, so look to the title or description to figure out the context of the vids. Mandi doesn't rescue but she does a huge amount of rehabbing and has a lot of permanent care bats unable to be released for various reasons. She sends me the most amazing videos of her old retired bats in care; they've all got individual personalities and adorable quirks. Mandi lives 1200 kms away from me so I don't get to visit there often. I raise money for her on the videos.
      The rescue vids from my point of view are all mine, and if you hear me talking and see my hands in the videos doing bat care, then that's me too.

    I hate that type of glass balustrading- it seems designed to entrap these bats. If the gap between glass panels was smaller, then this wouldn't happen. Poor Throttle, I hope he recovers. ♥️🦇♥️🦇♥️🦇♥️🦇♥️

      It's a very uncommon rescue and I can count on one hand the number of head stuck rescues I've done from these glass panels.
      Balcony rescues though - I do so many of those where the bat doesn't throttle itself to try to escape.

    My wife went to a rehab training facility in Texas for bats some years back and has rehabed several Brown bats (little and big) in Upper Michigan since. All successfully released back where they were found. People in general should have a greater appreciation for the importance of bats to our ecosystem. They are very cool and full of personality.

      Love your work. Flying foxes are magnificent animals. My grandma taught me this when I was little. She'd take me out to the huge Moreton Bay fig tree that my great grandmother planted and we'd watch them feast on the figs at night whilst we were standing in the buttresses of that majestic tree. I have a wild native garden myself 55 years on and was conscious of planting food trees for wildlife. I can't wait for the blue quandong fruit to ripen so I can listen to the bats dropping them on the tin roof of the shed at night after they have chewed on the flesh of the fruit. @@Megabattie

      Hi Javier.
      Bienvenido a Megabattie, soy Meg

    • @Megabattie

      @@lang-ed3bk Yes, but he died subsequently, which wasn't entirely unexpected.
      Read the info in the description under the video which elaborates a little.
      Throttle is an adult male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who got his head stuck between 2 adjacent sheets of glass balcony balustrading.
      During the last few years, these rescues have become more common with the increasing use of glass for balcony balustrades and pool fences.
      I naively assumed this would be a simple rescue where I just wrapped the batty and lifted him up between the panes to the top where there would be an exit point; I was wrong. The balcony glass was capped with a metal edging so there was nowhere to lift him out.
      I apparently had to get him out however he got in, just in reverse. He was very ungracious about the whole removal procedure (apparently it was all my fault he was stuck there); he bit on my towel and puffed up his neck and face, making the whole extraction a degree more complex. He kept trying to get his wrist into the gap to add to his bulk, and once I finally got the cloth out of his mouth his teeth were then left free to turn my fingers into confetti if he so chose. I had to stretch his neck out a bit to reduce his bulk and rotate his head so I could un-wedge it and slide it out. I won't say it was a particularly comfortable procedure for him but the options were for him to stay for a lot longer; I had to pick up Mum from church so I'd have had to come back in an hour or more.
      Or I could have called the Fireys to remove one of the panels...
      But the longer he was left there, the more he would struggle and the more damage he was doing to himself with all the exertion.
      So I rotated his head and slid it back through, but it was a very rough slide and squished his face and ears on the way out; nonetheless it was successful.
      I won't say I think he has a good chance of survival, because I don't. Such struggles can induce a kind of myopathy which causes renal failure.
      All we can do is give him supportive care; whatever damage he has done has already happened, we just haven't seen the effect on him yet and it will take its course over the next 24 hours giving us a clearer picture; my job is to make sure he's as hydrated as he possibly can be to mitigate the effects of any toxins building up in his blood and causing kidney damage. The rest is up to his body, for it to decide if he will live or die.
      KOKO (keep on keeping on) Throttle...
      Throttle, so named because I have already named a batty Headlock, in the same situation; Throttle was next best name I could think of to describe his situation.
      Thanks to the lovely MOPs who called and cared, and for the thumbnail pic which has a beautiful accidental reflection.
      Update: Throttle died 2 days post rescue; RIP big fella.
      His death was from exertional myopathy; stress struggling causes muscle damage, the by-products of which (myoglobin) cause kidney damage and cardiac damage. It's generally fatal within 24 hours, or a few weeks later when they get secondary renal failure.

      I rescue bats; that's my volunteer job of 17 years now.
      Welcome to Megabattie, I'm Meg

    Was there no way you could slightly sedate him so he would be more cooperative? You did an amazing job. I have so much respect for people like you that can help animals I was just curious.😊😊

    • @Megabattie

      Sedative drugs are vet only, so I can't carry around sedation unless a vet has prescribed it and seen the animal.
      He was pretty cooperative (didn't have much choice), considering.
      He wasn't difficult to handle, but the problem was the capping (most freestanding glass balcony panels don't have the capping). When I went to the rescue I just assumed I'd be able to pull him out by lifting him to the top; I was quite surprised at the capping (never seen one capped before).
      The clock is ticking with these rescues; the bat struggling causes a myopathy where the damaged muscle breakdown product is myoglobin which is toxic to the heart and kidneys. The more they struggle and the longer they struggle, the less likely they are to survive.

    • @lyndsilentz5171

    • @Megabattie

      @@lyndsilentz5171 I can tell you're not being disrespectful; I just answered as is; I don't really choose to sedate an animal to get them out unless it's totally necessary; sometimes it's necessary but he wasn't difficult to rescue, just a bit tricky. I wasn't worried about being bitten; good handling skills mean being bitten is rare and usually from being careless.

    • @Megabattie

      Mostly he was horribly stressed; he also was developing rhabdomyolysis which is reaction to struggling hard in a situation of great stress (being trapped). This leads to heart daily and renal failure and is generally fatal.
