  • Hall of Fame coach and legendary broadcaster John Madden sadly passed away yesterday at the age of 85. His influence on the sport of football is impossible to overstate. Madden was a legendary figure known to one generation as a Hall of Fame coach, another generation as the sport’s greatest announcer, and yet another for the video game that bears his name. Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe pay their respects and share tributes to Madden.

The father of men... The NFL GRANDFATHER. The one everyone wanted to make proud. The one who's opinion mattered most. The one who's smile gave you energy. The Gold Standard. A well of emotional intelligence. A compliment of genius. The voice that will echo the most in the halls of Canton. The voice of approval and affirmation... Telling all of America FROM the golden halls..."I knew that boy was special"... The voice that made America love NFL football and the voice that NFL football players cherished most... JOHN MADDEN
Thank you John Madden for passing along your love for this wonderful sport to me... I will never forget your voice.

Thanks Skip and Shannon for your takes. They were heart felt and gripping. I knew and remember everything that was said. I remember that hit that Jack Tatum on the player. I was blessed and honor to got to some Raiders games and seen the raiders play as he was a Coach. This is a huge and major lost to the NFL. I remember John Madden came to my high school to see his son play vs my high school. I remember they announced it over the PA system he was in the Stands.. That is huge for him to show up at the high school where I played football and the field I just played on. I was JV at the time.

103-32.... ONE HUNDRED THREE and thirty-two!!! I'm still trying to pull my jaw off the floor!!! BY FAR the greatest winning % of any NFL coach... JOHN MADDEN...wow!
But so much more than that, he really struck me as a genuinely nice man. About 2 months ago I wondered how he was doing, googled him, and could find nothing recent on him. He hadn't given an interview in 10 years. Then I find out today how he's doing, hit me hard. I'm really sad, LOVE watching old Lions games he did, especially Thanksgiving games. I hope he's in Heaven right now.
