Thinker Themer always stays on brand :). You have the thinking and then, unsurprisingly, you have the theming. It really helps them stand out in a crowded content-verse. I mean, they are also just very appealing people which helps :).
Great review! Thank you so much :D Seems like we might have liked this a little bit more than you, but still glad to see you did enjoy it. Have an amazing day, and play all the games! :D
The content you provide is invaluable...truly and completely invaluable. This was such an amazing breakdown of this game it's incredible. I wish you had time and endurance to make videos of every meaningful game on the market.
I bought Cooper Island a couple of years ago at Essen, and quickly realized it was a serious brain burner. I still like it, but after a game I'm so exhausted. It's not just a matter of "what do I want to do" in my turn. It's "oh, I need to do this free-action first, but that messes this other thing up, and crap - if I build a house now it has to be built on the biggest stack so I lose the resources there which I need to do that third thing I had meant to do, which means I need to take that action first, but then I have to pay that other player a resource and I don't have that just yet so... " - and so on. It looks simple, but the decision space is huge. It's an Ode game, so I suppose that's his thing.
Have to agree with Maggie on the theme here, it is interesting but incoherently implemented. I enjoy a good mechanical game but having a well integrated theme certainly helps make sense of a game, players understand what they actions they are taking and what they are ultimately trying to achieve, (see Kutna Hora for a recent well integrated example of mechanisms and theme). I feel I would have enjoyed it more if it was more of a simulation of a contemporary ecology/green energy project. Uwe Rosenberg did a nice job on something similar in Atiwa. I think maybe even growing flowers and selling them at markets would have made for more coherent gameplay!
Thank you for your coverage. Saving me some money and shelf space on this one. I could hear the warning signs with my already AP prone group and with the theme not being well implemented and the gameplay not feeling fresh between plays this is definitely a no go for me.
I liked your assessment. This is/was on my acquire list as the La Granja influence makes it automatically of interest. From your review I wondered if there are too many interlocking mechanisms? Though the 2 hour play time for four players was reassuring. Great presentation as always.
Given how disappointed Maggie was with the lack of thematic application, it would be fun to see Maggie's Top 10 list of games that she thought they did an excellent job of integrating theme, maybe even regardless of how much she actually enjoyed the game.
What a great board game review - much appreciated! - very structured, clear message track, very detailed, not much doubling, very analytical/thoughtful, sorting versus other games, well argued between both of you, articulated (for me as a German) and easy to follow. As a heavy board game review viewer, reader and listener I think this was one of the BEST reviews of the year for me (although I usually prefer more concise around 10 minutes reviews). My Planta Nubo will arrive tomorrow - so we are curious to see whether we will agree with you. 🙂
A bit sad that this didn't stuck the landing, with these designers I was hoping for a 10/10 hahaha. When and if this game arrives in Brazil I'll still give it a try because I love Uwe games and La Granja so much :)
I’ve only recently found your channel but I’m so glad I have!!! I feel like you deliver such a good and concise explanation AND quality pros/cons in a way that feels fun and exciting, never have to fast forward with you guys :)) also so nice to have an Aussie game reviewer too!!!
Excellent review as always! This game to me is definitely a clever Euro game, but we share the same views about replayability and the lack of options to influence the card market. The moment when Amy quietly and confidently announced her 48 points from end game card bonuses will forever stay with me. What a privilege to witness the queen of euros exerting her dominance :)
Thanks for the great review again. I was on the fence with this one, but your review summed up all my hesitations with it. Curious to know how many times you generally play a game before reviewing it? I know you mention the different player counts that you've experienced it at, but wondering if you have a set number of plays before you feel that you can review it?
You guys have honed in your craft. I really got a sense of what it’s like to play this game-the mechanics but even more importantly what the experience of playing feels like-which is really the most important thing for me. Have to take this one off the list. What you experienced playing and what it felt like is not for me/us.
Thank you so much for your explanation of Planta Nubo. Like you , we were very intrigued by this game , because of the pedigree of the design team. After listening to you explain the game , we realized this game is probably over our heads and doesn't have the thematic appeal to make it worth the effort. We'll probably play it at a convention and call it a relationship 😂. We're senior citizens and we're very particular about how we spend our time , because we have less of it.😅 Thank you again for sharing.❤
I was listening to the overview and was thinking gosh this just sounds like game mechanic gibberish and then you hit us with the lack of theme you felt, so I was glad about that. Sounds too heavy in a the fiddly heavy euro game puzzle style for me, who dislikes polyominoes almost as much as rolling & writing
Solid review. Thank you for all your thoughts. Very deep and lots to think about. On the surface, I was thinking this was a slam dunk for me, but I'm not sure I want such a heavy load. Also, I want a fun solo. That said, I play Merv solo when others will say no. And I do enjoy Tapestry, but not so much Carnegie, as far as how much I want to think. 😄
I think they just rate things high - in the 6-9 range not the 1-10 range. Maybe selection bias - they only play games they know they are going to quite like.
Fair point and anticipation, new-shiny, and "game in the wheelhouse" all factors in. I also know the "6-9" isn't necessarily true however. The ones that are lower just move along to others who like them more :). It's possible those lower rated games just don't hit videos. I'll remain curious where this one "settles in"@@jonathanpickles2946

Another game earning the title of #1 of something this year/convention 🤨🤔 going to stay skeptical. I love the coverage on it!
Thanks for the review!

Quality video. Definitely buying this one :)
Still a quite high rating in the end. I didn’t expect that based on your review. Thanks for this honest review!

I’m keen to try this but it doesn’t sound like I need to rush to buy it. Thanks for the great review!
27:16 I need a GIF of Maggie's reaction here. 😆
Meme alert :)
I wish you could do a gameplay for us to get better feeling and understanding of the game and flow 😀

It's a bummer this one didn't seem to shine for you guys. It's gorgeous and seemed promising but you saved me time and money with an honest review!

Great review, as always❤️ where are your token bowls from? Best wishes from Switzerland
Could you please do a top 10 best 2 player games
I have a somewhat off-topic question concerning the ratings: Do the games with the highest scores also happen to be your personal favorites?
I'm extremely surprised these ratings are this high. I wonder if they'll drop down over time...

Very intriguing game. I am sure i would have fun with it but do nit know anyone who I would play it with. May end up being a con game for me.
If this is a theme you like, have you heard of eartgborne Rangers?
Eek. Hope I haven’t bitten off more than I can chew. I have this on order but sounds like it might be too heavy for my tastes. 🙄
