  • Can you believe we're 180 games into this series? It feels like just yesterday when we were making ridiculous promises about getting through our entire board game collection (LOL). This week we're taking a look at three classic puzzle games and one new one... as well as a thoroughly loved classic of ours - Lorenzo il Magnifico, and top of the hotness, Gloomhaven Buttons & Bugs.
    Enjoy! A&M xx

    Thanks for stopping by! We're Amy & Maggie aka ThinkerThemer. We're an Australian couple with two very different perspectives of what makes a great board game - Amy (Thinker) is all about the mechanics and enjoys tight, competitive games, and Maggie (Themer) is all about the storytelling and the theme of the game, and the 'world' that the designer is trying to create. Subscribe to our channel to hear us talk about these two elements of a game, and how well integrated we feel these are in delivering a cohesive and wonderful game experience.

    Very sweet. At 45:22 the german word "Feierabend" means the end of the working day and time to relax. You have to say "fire -a (like in "artist)" bend (like in "bend over")". "Abend" means "evening" in english. Many greetings from germany 🙂

    My favorite ladies from down under! My Flatout ranking is: Cascadia, then Calico, then Verdant (although I haven’t played it seems less my cup of tea than the other two). But, Amy’s point about Calico tension has me rethinking my ranking.
    This video was my listening for my morning and afternoon commute today, lovely.

    Great to see Lorenzo covered in this video (and in the comments too)!! It is one of our absolute favourites at 2p as well!
    We particularly love the expansion with the asymmetric families, and the auction to bid on them at the start of the game. It adds a ton of depth and effectively unlimited replayability. It does take a few plays of the base game to get your bearings before adding them in. It could be one of the reasons this game is underrated - but for those who like Lorenzo, I highly recommend the expansions!

    I agree, Lorenzo is one of my top 10s! My ex husband got it for $99 with a gift card at a FLGS and I remember turning my nose up at it based on the box cover alone…then we played it and everything you said about the tense player interaction is true. I love love love it. It’s definitely never leaving my collection. ❤

    Out of the 3 games I prefer Cascadia over Calico or Verdant but that is just personal preference and low entry requirements. Lorenzo has been on my "must play" list for way too long, I need to play it soon! Lacuna has been my go to with my wife as a coffee break game, such a beaut!

    I love Calico!
    It was one of my first solo games (and one of my first ‘proper’ games) so I will always have a lot of love for it.
    Like Amy I slightly cooled on it a bit once I’d played more games and understood luck mitigation better, but last time I went back to it I warmed back up again, because it *is* a brain burning game and I love agonising over every tile placement… but weirdly because the luck element is so big I can kind of relax while I stress if that makes sense?
    Like if I do badly, it’s absolutely not my fault at all, it was totally 100% the tiles 😂
    I was also thrilled to see Buttons and Bugs get a shout out! I love the Gloomhaven base system/mechanics but do get a little bit bored with all the ‘kill all the bad guy’ missions. But I’m still loving Button and Bugs purely for the novelty factor of being able to play an entire game of it *and* pack it away in the time it would take me to set up a game of Gloomhaven lol plus the story and art are super freaking cuuuute!
    Also Maggie’s chuckle as she said ‘all these flowers will be mine’ in the Lacuna review was possibly the most adorable ‘evil’ laugh I’ve heard in ages.

    Of the three I think I would rank them the same, but a little closer together. Calico is definitely my favorite, we have it on our 10X10 this year and have been trying the scenarios in the back of the rulebook which have been fun! Harmonies sounds like a very interesting puzzle game, I will be on the look out for that for sure! And I have been casually looking for Lacuna whenever I look at games, hoping to be able to find it locally or when I am already getting something, not quite enough to order it by itself, but I am very interested in it.
    Love these videos and the genuine fun you guys have together!

    I would rank the Flatout Games trilogy exactly the same! Calico is my favourite, the draft is definitely a bit lucky but there's something about the tightness of the puzzle combined with the simplicity of it which really sings to me. I also have a lot of love for Lorenzo, it's the quintessential dry euro! A rare amount of agreement from me with this episode lol

    Verdant is my favorite of these three. Cascadia is not engaging enough, Calico is too frustrating, but Verdant is just right!

    Nice new episode. I only got my Undersized Gloomhaven yesterday. Need to check it out still. The big luck-factor with the tiles always kept me from buying Calico. I prefer Cascadia and still need to try my Verdant copy yet. "Feierabend" seems very intriguing. I hope there are no scabs in this game! LOL Love your pronunciation. "10, out of 10" -- no matter how regular it will be -- there cannot be an end (simple Math), ever. So, just keep going.

  • @lisamarin8836
    @lisamarin8836 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Calico is definitely my favourite of the three Flatout games also - the others have nice artwork but just don't have that perfect combination of rules simplicity and brain-burning, push-your-luck puzzle. I moved Verdant on pretty quickly even though I loved the plant illustrations, and I'm still not totally sold on Cascadia. But you have convinced me that I need to try Harmonies, which looks a bit like a prettier riff on Reef.

    I am always excited to see this series pop up!! Great list of games! Some I haven't played. My favorite of the trilogy is Cascadia..it edges out Calico for me. I haven't played Verdant yet. But my fave of this series is Lorenzo!! I am with Amy, I love this game! I haven't played it in a while, but really need to. I would have probably given it a similar rating! Keep up the series! Love it!

    I was playing online solitaire Calico off and on while I listened. I also play solitaire Cascadia online, which I also enjoy, but then I live in Cascadia! Verdant is available in the same place but I can never wrap my head around it - perhaps because I'm so bad at taking care of houseplants?

    Funny how tastes vary. Cascadia is one of my two favorite games ever and I adore it. It's such a vibes-based and relaxing game, and for me it is just as close to 'perfect' as a game can get. Given that, I'm now super intrigued by Harmonies and will be hunting that one down, because it seems I'm going to love it. Thanks for the rec 💜

    Verdant is my favourite, the only one I purchased, and I think it has the best overall look. Something about matching the rooms lighting to plant needs is so satisfying. I find its puzzle to be the right balance of restriction and freedom for tile and card placement. I play mostly solo. Cascadia is more freeform and loses tension (second favorite) but I find the overall look a bit garish. Calcio is more restrictive and stressful, which for me equates to less fun.

    Worker placement is one of my favorite mechanisms by far. I really enjoy the choose-your-own-adventure that it often provides for deciding which locations to visit/activate and in which order. I also like the tension that most worker placement games create from not being able to place workers at locations already visited by opponents. I haven't played Lorenzo, and its look isn't appealing, but I have heard it mentioned one or two other times in recent months, so I'd be up for trying it if the opportunity arose.

    • @francopdx
      @francopdx 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh, and I almost backed Button & Bugs cos it seemed like that might be my only opportunity to play another 'haven game (played Jaws of the Lion a few years ago and super enjoyed it), but it seemed heavier on the battling, which I thought might get repetitive, so I passed. Although, this year I started a Frosthaven campaign with friends, and that has been great, and it's been rad to finally get into a big 'haven campaign.

I may need to look into that more, also really want Fast Sloths but it's harder to get now and didn't have budget at time. I own Calico and I still enjoy it, but maybe less and less as time passes. I think I like Verdant the best of the three. Cascadia is a solid, fun game, but I don't feel like i need to own it. Verdant lets me feel like Im building something enjoyable rather than slowly giving up on my dreams like Calico. Verdant is definitely different enough to own but I still have trouble justifying when shelf space is limited. Calico got here first and that stubborn cat isnt going anywhere.

I also have Fit to Print, Deep Dive, and Point City on the shelf with them and they look lovely. Deep Dive gets the most play out of them all because my husband loves taking it to meetup groups and it’s playable with my young nieces and nephew. Played Fit to Print with a group of 6 and it was one of the most fun experiences I have had in a game night.

    Calico is still the OG for me, it was one of the first games I got when getting into the hobby, and it still sings for me as a brain-burny puzzle... glad to hear tho that I'm not the only one who's still "meh" on Cascadia. My partner loves it, and I've gotten into this cycle where everytime he asks to pull it off the shelf, I'll then follow our play up with another bout of solo games of it before giving it up again (still haven't beat Scenario #7 with those damn foxes lol). But it's just... too abstact and not colorful enough? Idk. I love Verdant waaaaaayy more tho, so maybe it's just the theme is too butch for me. lol But Verdant is definitely my favorite, because I've spent the most time on the solo campaign which I really, really love, because it's the perfect solo experience (for me), in that it's a nice balance of think-y point salad (pun intended) and chill, casual, cup-of-coffee game.
