    Maggie was a BEAST at charades. The audience was guessing everything so fast! That was such a great panel to watch. (Naveen's charades were also great to watch)

    Great recap of "new to you" games played at DTW! It was so great to see you both, play games, and hang out! DTW is definitely one of the trips/events I look forward to the most every year! I had a such a great time in the Outback!

    I've been wanting to play Snow Tails for years, but haven't found a copy to play on. Glad someone out there still has one! And I really want to get my hands on Taylor's Of What's Left, but that's next to impossible. Will probably have to wait until Seers Catalog comes out

    "learning things by rote" - the essence of why I struggled with Weather Machine but could never quite articulate as well as I'd have liked. Thanks, Maggie! Great coverage of the only event that would bring me to Vegas and already looking forward to next year!

    So glad you've enjoyed London! If you buy yourself a copy and find the game to be a bit too long with 2 players, try my super simple 2-player variant (I've also posted in on BGG): play using all spaces for a 4-player game on the main board. After you draw your mandatory card at the start of your turn, discard the top card from the deck onto the main board (clear the bottom row and slide down the top row if necessary, as per standard rules). Optional rule: if you want to keep the game end trigger player-driven, do not discard the last card in the deck in this way.
    This will speed up the game and what's important is that all the cards are still in the game and nothing is removed. The extended board is here to prevent the market from refreshing too quickly while still giving players access to a wide array of useful cards.

    I played Weather Machine once and loved it. 45 minute lecture, 3.5 hour playtime. So many buttons to push and you have no idea why you're pushing them. I'd agree it's complex just for the sake of making your head hurt, but I enjoyed that for some reason. Much more than On Mars, which felt extremely procedural and dull to me. Things is, my friends love On Mars and give Weather Machine the cold shoulder.

    Kolejka is great. It was the hit of a little convention I attended just for the unusual theme, which really does teach about that time period. I spent a little time in East Germany during that same era, and they had similar issues. Hey, so when are you guys going to play Hooky?

  • @olanmills64
    @olanmills64 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Re: Weather Machine, I felt the same way about The Gallerist, which turned me off from trying other Lacerda games. It wasn't that complicated, but it seemed like it had arbitrary mechanisms which didn't fit the theme and made the game rules and mechanisms harder to internalize, and the gameplay did not not seem that remarkable. I felt like the most remarkable thing was the box size and price.

    Nice to see you back guys! Had one rather unfortunate game of Lacerda's wonderful On Mars (with @Shoitaan below funnily enough) at Steve's house from Boardgame BBQ. I'd never played it before and yet I think we started around 10:30pm. From (an admittedly very fuzzy) memory we finished after 3am. I had zero brain left by then. I was exhausted and I don't think any one was very happy with me. Still, it was an interesting exercise... I guess?

    The Iki expansion (Akebono) DOES add something to the 2-player game 🙂 A „grandmaster“ who might visit your shop and promote you, even if your opponent does not stop by. Supposed to make the game more interactive.
    We own the expansion but have only tried it with three players so far. Hope we get to try it at 2P soon. 🙂
    As for the blocked spots: we just always made sure to own enough sandals. 😅

    I'd suggest giving Weather Machine another go as the solo is quite good, also looking at the theme from an academic process perspective really helps. It's a unique one and not in my top 3 Lacerdas but very close, definitely a Marmite game of his.
    Happy to hear you had a great time!

    It sounds like you made a mistake. In the two-player variant you do not use the fire defense track to determine player order. Players switch turn order according to the small black and white fuji/moon sign on the month track. Each player gets one of these markers at the beginning. That way it is more balanced between players, also in the two-player game.

    I’ve bought the Polish version of Kolejka. With a Polish mother I’ve experienced the rows myself as a child. What I remember was the patience the mostly women were queing for hours. It was a very social event, where all the gossips of the town were shared. I still have to make the English cards for this game, but like to try it.

      Tamara. I experienced queues as a kid too. I remember that I was waiting in the queue for bread for hours. That were dark times when we were under influence of Russia.

      @@mariuszkania9947 that I rembember too, but as a child on holiday I didn’t see the dark side of it. The trouble my grandmother went to gather food to feed us during our stays. That’s the reason why my grandparents came to us in the holidays. My mother wanted to spoil her parents. I only went there a few times in my childhood.

    Wow, I did not see that coming in your London story. I love that game. It's my favourite Wallace design and I own both versions of it. I generally like race games, so I'd probably like Snow Tails, but I don't see it being better than Cubitos or Quest for El Dorado for me. Even Heat and Thunder Road could not top them.

    Weather machine is taught poorly by most. As an ex researcher, the thematic connection makes sense. The central space is for experiments and academic publishing. The space to the right is for implementation /translating research to practice and the left side is government grants and contracts. I don't know why they sold it so hard as a climate themed game

    • @elqord.1118
      @elqord.1118 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I was taught WM very well and just came to the conclusion (after 3 plays) that it is Lacerda’s least enjoyable outing. I don’t care about the theme a lot, be it Weather or Academic proceedings…I just know when someone got completely lost in their own work and lost sight of the trees. WM never felt great, never became intuitive, offered no excitement and not satisfaction. So many small rules that can’t be explained well. It was a huge letdown

      I had a lot of issues with the theme too, and blamed it on the fact that I just didn't get it. Maybe that is something the game or rulebook could explain better??

      @MrPeter13th 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @elqord.1118 what you mentioned about not been intuitive, I felt that on "ON MARS" found it kind of arbitrary, and as Maggi mentioned Lacerda designs seems to be just complex for the sake of complexity and not a rewarding and enjoyable experience... I love heavy Euros that blows your mind and brings joy.

    I still can’t believe how that game of London turned out. 😅 You literally ran that engine at like 100% efficiency - it was actually kind of amazing to witness. 👀 Well played! Glad you enjoyed it, and enjoyed schooling all of us lol.
    Also, nice background… mostly… 🤡… 🥲
