    I like the fact that you are prepared to share your mistakes as well as your successes! It gives us less talented modellers a bit more heart! Very good video Richard.

      Not sure about less talented, I fluke most of it haha. Having a play is all part of the fun, It can be off putting seeing these picture perfect layouts. regards Richard

    Nice job. I suspect the white bleed wasn't so much an issue if the masking tape but a general problem with painting and masking tape. There is a painters technique that achieves great results. Put the masking tape down as you did and of course press it down good. The paint over one more time with the base color, gray in your case, along the edge of the tape where the white line would go. That seals the gap under the tape with the correct color. THEN paint the white on top once the gray dried again, and then peal the tape off. We use that approach in the US where the drywall board walls mostly have an orange peel surface that makes masking impossibly boy difficult.

    Simple solution to it not sticking out of the tunnel run half the power car off the end of the platform 😊 great work by the way

    Very well done Richard, when I get around to building my main layout I will definitely build my station platforms like yours, if you don't mind...Simon

      Ha do what you think best Simon, I wish you best of luck! Take the time getting the right shape out of the ply leads to a very solid object that wont let you down over time. regards Richard

    I used grey primer spray cans from B&M stores etc, cheap as chips. Been struggling with white lines too. Have opted for using cheap white spray cans to see if improves what ive done as it initially turned out as yours did. Im working in N gauge.

    • @NewJunction
      @NewJunction  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Argh, its bad enough on a 00 gauge platform let alone an N gauge layout lol

    Looking good platforms are always a pain to make from scratch like you I have problems with the white lines so I now use automotive pin stripe tape from Halfords then give it a light rub with fine sand paper to take the shine off looking forward to further updates kind regards Rob Johnston

    Hi new junction great video a couple of tips for you they do a blue tape looks like masking tape but it none seep the paint does not creep under the tape also when you have laid your paint on with the brush while it is still wet lay it off go from one end to the other very lightly in one sweep and if it is wider than your brush go back and do another sweep where the brush did not catch and this will eliminate your brush marks hope you don't think I am trying to tell you what to do it just a bit of advice. Regards George.Painter.

    great video Richard! love the platform job..ive been using Homebase Slate Grey..very similar..i did a similar job on the white lines and used ordinary sellotape which worked fine..but im sure youll find something!.. super project all the best dave

    @thescrapline4905 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great progress Richard.. if you're looking for a decent masking tape I work in the decorating industry and would recommend Tesa tapes and the yellow one is spot on for fine lines and stopping paint bleed.. looking at those platform ramps made me fancy those pink wafers biscuits lol. Off to the shop I go!
    Looking forward to the next part.
    Tim

    Coat of paint does make a big difference. I don't know how many times I've got a can of spray paint, had to go back for more, and still then run out ;) Glad to see things coming together. Interested in what your plans are for the station canopy. I'm working on my final platforms now, and the canopy is what I'm still back + forth on. Iain

    • @NewJunction
      @NewJunction  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Iain, I'm going to try and custom build the canopy, trying to avoid a designed kit. really want to push myself on this side of the layout. :) regards Richard

      Good man! Looking forward to seeing it, since I'd likely end up needing to use a similar technique with the curved platforms. Make sure you're super detailed in how you do it ;)

    I have always found the easiest method is to use Artists Card (from The Range, etc) Easily cut with a craft knife. Cut base walls and platform supports to same height. Cover base walls with brick paper and spray with hairspray. Use paper (like wallpaper) to make a template for platform tops. Apply to card and cut to size. Scribe a line about 3mm wide along the top edge. Paint platform top grey or cover in paving paper. Paint scribed platform edge in white. A lot easier to cut and adjust than working in wood !

    • @aaronclaire8721
      @aaronclaire8721 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ray Wilson the way I understand it is the wood forms the base, and will be covered, therefore more likely to stand the test of time when compared with card formers, especially as loft layout where temps fluctuate and humidity of the air changes throughout the year

    • @rhiwderinraytube
      @rhiwderinraytube 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are worried about temperature stability then use plasticard (or even Peco platform walls) or even Styrofoam.

    • @NewJunction
      @NewJunction  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ray Wilson or left over ply wood from your baseboard buildings! ;-)

    Can I suggest coming from the scale model making world, you use Halfords car body filler primer spray. It will fill micro defects. Even normal primer is better and a lot cheaper. Good job

    hi! great vid as a scenic artist you need to use s smaller brush with closer bristles that will reduce the paint lines as your using a thick paint. you can get cheap brushed from places like B&M that do the job!

    • @NewJunction

    I am having the same problem with my latest video. Even though it will probably be 10 - 15/20 mins long, the first part was done on January 26 and I thought it would be completed a few days to a week later, but still not ready and it's now 5 March. Oh ell, it will be done soon! :) ...... Ian

    That is an expensive under coat. I would have gone to the local hardware and bought a generic acrylic spray pack
