Can’t recommend this video enough if you’re planning on using an airbrush on your layout. I’ve just finished airbrushing my track today and it’s turned out exactly the way I wanted thanks to this video. I can’t stress enough the importance of thinning your paint and cleaning your airbrush properly. Yes it’s time consuming and requires planning, but it really pays off.
Nice and clear instructions, not only on the weathering process itself but also on the equipment that you are using and the airbrush cleaning afterwards too. All very helpful to everyone who is about to embark on this stage of their layouts. Its amazing how the weathering transforms the look of the trackwork, although as you mention its slow and tedious but so worth the time spent doing it. Top marks Dave. Regards Simon.
The best I've seen. A very thorough video explaining how to use a dual action air brush and the excellent colours of paints for track weathering. Brilliant well done Dave.
Hi David- I have just stated laying my track, once laid will proceed to use your ballasting method, then use your weathering method. Then look toward the modelling of the layout, get all the messy stuff out of the way first, but happy to take others ideas on best order to proceed. Really good to see the product details you used in order to achieve that great finish. The best I have found so I will follow your examples. Fanstatic step by step guide. Well done and congrats for great video. Allan
Hi Allan....its all about getting things done in the right order....I am desperate to add scenic trackside stuff now, but the Overhead masts have to be designed and made first, then I can add grass, weeds, bushes etc. You have to work it all out. I suppose that's part of the fun? ;-) Dave
Fantastic I've been following you for a good couple of years Brilliant layout and really good instructions very inspiring I'm working on a small shelf style layout as I've limited room based on a modern Holding sidings fuel point with a light maintanance shed I'm at the stage of drawing up a simple track plan as I've only got 8' × 15" to play with I'm looking forward to undoing testing and learning how to solder ballast airbrush on test sections I particularly admire your neat and thorough way of doing things Keep up the great work Regards Kev Miller
Hi dave Can I say another excellent video of a how to do as I have just purchased a airbrush kit your tips and tricks and advice on how to weather the track the water down of the paint and what psi to set has been a massive help. Hopefully new year once I've got some paints I can watch these videos again and start doing my weathering. Many thanks keep these brill videos coming. Peter from birmingham
Everything is total perfection Dave, another Masterclass in 'How To' so thanks again for sharing your professional approach to everything you do...Regards...Bob
Well - Finally have caught up, cracking layout Dave, great inspiration thanks looking forward to the TMD being completed, so happy I can watch it real time 🙂
Gerry Clough hi Gerry, wow thank for that brilliant feedback. If you wish, please feel free to share this video and comment on my other videos etc. Thanks again. Dave
Hi mate thanks for sharing your technique I had a go at airbrushing and if you watch the video I put up your see how bad I am at it so not looking forward to that job. Your track looks amazing a really realistic and I love how you have made the different section with different tones of weathering so as not to just have the same all over the layout and I was gonna ask what compressor you use but see someone has beaten me to it and I looked it up and it looks the same as mine.
Good tutorial and certainly techniques I will be using on my own layout. I am surprised none of the manufacturers have come up with weathered track (at a price premium of course!) as it's now a pretty common thing for railway modellers to do.
Yet again looking awesome and great tips. I agree things are way too expensive these days no wonder youngsters can't afford to get into hobbies and are bored :(. But otherwise look forward to the next update. Btw decide what your doing in that corner yet lol. Caravan park, house under construction or cathedral with graveyard hehe
Great work. Have you think of masking the rail top, to avoid cleaning it after weathering? I don´t like very much to use the abrasive rubber to clean it.
Very good explanation. Only additional info I was looking to was what compressor and air drying you might be using and hose type and length that works for you.
Hi Dave, looks super indeed. Any chance you could show a digram of your complete layout? Am interested to see how it all connects together, thanks Ian.
Hi, I don't have a complete electronic diagram, but if you go to the Layout tours videos 1 and 2 you will see a complete 360 of the layout as I take you on a tour. Its not 100% up to date but it will give you a real idea. Cheers. Dave
Great video - just what I need as I’m about to get an airbrush and weather the track. Can I ask why you choose enamel rather than acrylic paint please? Thanks.
Nice relaxing video to watch. Its always interesting to see how other modellers do things. Knock that fast forward stuff on the head though. I like to see people work in real time! Quality content like yours doesn't need to be sped up to keep people interested ;)
Greetings Dave, I have waited for you to post a video about your weathering track and here it is, GREAT!! I've watched your video your other on ballasting and used the method that you used which worked out great for me. Weathering, I wanted an example that would look realistic and you have done a fantastic job of it. Thank you, thank you!! Know I can get going with some weathering on my railroad!! YIPPIE! The one advantage I may have over some other modelers is that I can place the modules on my layout on their sides so I don't have to try and paint at difficult angles! All that said, you have given a wealth of information and ideas for weathering track so I can attempt to achieve somewhat the same look as on your railroad. Great job Dave and much appreciate all of your videos!! Much Respect and Cheers from across The Big Pond!! LOL D. Muse WTCMRR
Dave, a few videos back when you were showing the ballasting procedure, you said you would make a video showing ballasting round the points. Is this still in the pipeline or had you forgotten about it....Ian
I've reached the stage on my layout where I need to weather the track. However there's a problem. The track is about 2" from the walls of the room so is it possible to get the airbrush in such a tight space to spray the side of the rails facing the wall?
Fantastic demo. can i ask which model airbrush as they are different variations i like to get the same also which needle setting are you using greats film keep up the great work
Very nice "how to", and easy to follow. The track rubber you use to clean the top of the rail do you need to use it straight away before the paint drys or can you do it once you complete all the weathering?
Hi, most certainly WAIT until its dry....or your make a right mess! Give it 24 hours and then rub it off, giving it a quick vacuum after. But definitely leave it to dry and harden. Cheers. Dave
the base board? Its just weatherseal grey primer....the lights show it up more blue than it actually is. I never noticed this before. it will be painted and have scenic stuff on it soon enough. Cheers. Dave
Great video Dave. Very helpful indeed. I followed your ballasting video and am now about to start airbrushing my track. A quick question, would the hardened PVA glue on the sleepers (from the ballasting) cause the airbrushed paint to flake off with time because in effect I would be spraying on the hardened glue. Many thanks. Keep up the good work.
Hi, most of the glue will seep off the sleepers and into the ballast. There is only a tiny thin residue left on the rails and sleepers. The glue does not affect the paint. in fact it might actually aid adhesion of the paint as the plastic used by Peco etc for their sleepers, buffer stops etc is type of plastic that does not particularly like paint. But I have had no issues with paint coming off the sleepers, rails or ballast when dry. Its very durable! I hope this helps. Dave
Great how to video. I wish I was able to weather my track. Need a little more practice with the air brush. I think I need to turn down the pressure. I was watching another video which had the pressure around 25 psi.
Hi That's a great way to Airbrush Track IF your track is ACCESSIBLE from BOTH Directions ! WHAT if your Track goes along a Wall and is up against a Wall , HOW do you airbrush from the INACCESSIBLE side ? Just curious " ))
Hi its a "Force 8"..I got it from airbrushes.com. Cost me over £28, but you cant skimp on cheap ones when it comes to your health. Cheers. Dave airbrushes.com/product_info.php?cPath=400_403_407_3&products_id=21899&osCsid=51gnj4g6u4edesmaue1u4rlo76
you can, but you end up with clean ballast and dirt sleepers. Hardly realistic. But I will paint the rail sides (light rust) before ballasting if I am simulating a newly laid section of track. I have also found that when I have weathered before ballasting and then used the PVA mix to fix the ballast in place you are left with a slight residue on top of the weathered sleepers and on the rail sides. So I prefer to do it this way as shown in the video, it eliminates these problems. Cheers. Dave
Or... You could do what I did which is leave your track for 40 years in a salt air environment then it rusts FOR REAL, then simply polish the track tops with 2000 grade Emery paper.

A very well put together instructional video. It's given me the confidence to start weathering my track so many thanks
Another great "How To" video. Thanks for posting this very informative video.
A work of art. Thanks for sharing this.
very nice how you do video, I really like the thought of dirty ballast and sleepers too. gives it the full test of time look.
Superb video Dave. Thank you.
Brill Video Dave, very instructive. Look forward to the next one.
Great instructional video Dave, looks great when all stages are completed.

another great video Dave thank you
Your "The Man" Dave!,,,, Excellent instructional that even i can understand! Lol... Thanks man'
Well - Finally have caught up, cracking layout Dave, great inspiration thanks looking forward to the TMD being completed, so happy I can watch it real time 🙂
Hi Dave, very Informative video as usual. Iv'e still to get an airbrush it's on my long list. Thanks for sharing your method.Cheers John.
That's a great how-to video on using an airbrush, actually the best I've seen!
The weathering part was just a bonus for me 👍
Gerry Clough hi Gerry, wow thank for that brilliant feedback.

Hi, I 'think' its going to be the caravan park lol
LOL ahh nasty word "think" especially as a model railroader it will be changed lol
hi best track weathering vid ive seen
cheers
mick
hi thanks, share it please! ;-) Glad you enjoyed it. Dave

AS-18 compressor with a braided hose.

You are an airbrush wizard!
hi, thanks! lol. Please share this video if you like it. Dave
Brilliant video very interesting I know what to do now I have not got air brush I might use a little paint brush with the powder
Hi Dave, great video, but may I ask what compressor you have to go with your airbrush? Many thanks, Rob
Great video - just what I need as I’m about to get an airbrush and weather the track. Can I ask why you choose enamel rather than acrylic paint please? Thanks.

Hi, Its rather tedious to watch an airbrush go back and forth for some! lol. Glad you found it useful and relaxing. Dave

hi, really glad its been of use to you. good luck with your ballasting and weathering. Dave
Can I get away with .3mm Nozzle ? What size did you use? Thank you.

Hi, the best all rounder I’ve found is an Iwata eclipse.
@@DeanPark
Thanks so much looks just what im looking for can i ask does it come with its on compressor
@@DeanPark
Sorry to be a pain what model number
As they seems to be 3/4 different eclipse models

Brilliant video what's the blue stuff on the board
blue stuff? the grey primed base board?
Icklebean03 you have the same colour match as me ickle bean, as I too see blue!
the base board? Its just weatherseal grey primer....the lights show it up more blue than it actually is. I never noticed this before. it will be painted and have scenic stuff on it soon enough. Cheers. Dave
Hi Dave, any particular reason why you use enamel and not acrylic? Nice video.
Enamel is more durable. It’s harder wearing and I find it gives a better finish on the ballast and sleepers.
Hi Dave, great Vid, do you have any recommendations for an airbrush compressor on a budget?
Hi, I use the AS18 model..fairly standard, ranges from about £50-80, depending where you buy!
Thanks a lot Dave that's good to know 👍
What color paint was used? I am unable to understand most of what you are saying while you are discussing the color.
Railmatch sleeper grime and roof dirt
what compresser do you use please
Hi its an AS18 air compressor model. Pretty standard. It does the job!
cheers Dave ye just have a good look around at a few on eBay and in some model magazines
Great how to video. I wish I was able to weather my track. Need a little more practice with the air brush. I think I need to turn down the pressure. I was watching another video which had the pressure around 25 psi.
lower pressure, more control, but it can take longer. Vary it between 10-20PSI in my opinion. But there are many ways to do it. Dave
Does it not lower the conduction of electricity
Not if the rail tops are clean!
Hi
That's a great way to Airbrush Track IF your track is ACCESSIBLE from BOTH Directions ! WHAT if your Track goes along a Wall and is up against a Wall , HOW do you airbrush from the INACCESSIBLE side ? Just curious " ))
Thanks. I try to airbrush the track before scenics walls etc do in. But if that is not possible you just have to try the best you can. :-)
Hi hope your okay just looking back and was wondering what face mask that is your using?
Hi its a "Force 8"..I got it from airbrushes.com. Cost me over £28, but you cant skimp on cheap ones when it comes to your health. Cheers. Dave airbrushes.com/product_info.php?cPath=400_403_407_3&products_id=21899&osCsid=51gnj4g6u4edesmaue1u4rlo76
What about weathering before laying?
you can, but you end up with clean ballast and dirt sleepers. Hardly realistic. But I will paint the rail sides (light rust) before ballasting if I am simulating a newly laid section of track. Is that PECO track?
Yes. All of my track is peco.
nice video..
i am scared of my airbrush.
lol....just takes practice...I am by no means an expert either. I just 'potter about' and experiment. Dave
Or... You could do what I did which is leave your track for 40 years in a salt air environment then it rusts FOR REAL, then simply polish the track tops with 2000 grade Emery paper.
