Seeinga mock-up on a beac bench of this car setup and how the test light works in this situation would be cool like a small mock up of what went wrong so you can track it out of the car
Great run through of using bulbs instead of 1000 fuses, haha. I noticed 2 things only another tech knows the pain of. 1, part way through, I noticed the blood on your knuckle from pulling plastic trims, lol. 2. As soon as you traced it to the A-pillar connector = the old sun visor mount screw through the wiring! Hahaha.
Jake I enjoy all your videos. I like the way you breakdown your diags. and have the patience on the camera to show us your way of doing a diag. smoothly. Please keep up the videos coming.God bless you.
I've diagnosed a short exactly like that, they screwed the screw into the wire. I used the power probe ect3000. That tool has helped me find me all kinds of shorts.
I'm addicted to your videos since finding your channel..., when you kept one lead of the bulb to the 12v pin on the bcm connector and removed the other lead that was connected to the ground bar in the dashboard and started tapping into other circuits, it took me a while to figure out what you did there and why?? You did that because you were looking for a cirtcuit that is shorted to ground so u kept one lead to 12v pin while the other lead if it finds a ground or a short to ground it would light up... Brilliant video as always....keep it up man
Great work! I appreciate you taking the time to demystify by explaining the diagnostic process. The details you provide to narrow the issue through circuit elimination are awesome . So simple watching you do it. Though more difficult in reality. Thanks for making it look easy and simple to understand.
Great demonstration on breaking down individual circuits to find your short. Ive been wanting to use that method but haven't found a chance to yet. Ive found that the majority of shorts on modern vehicles are technician error by not properly mounting and routing harnesses.
Your a beast brother, made that look easy. Great explanation on using the light to find the grounded wire, and verifying the short was gone after the repair was performed! Love the channel man! Ill be binge watching all your videos now haha
To find if you have a ground in your wireing system. Take off your hot wire coming from your battery hook up your tester one lead to the. Hot terminal going to vehicle. Then to your hot on your battery if it lights up you have a ground. In your wireing system
Nice video. I am not against cutting a wire in the harness to break the circuit in half for testing as well if there are no good connectors around to do it. I can always solder it back together. It is always nice when they aren't intermittent as well. Those intermittent shorts can be real fun ones.
Thank you! That was really cool. I really appreciate the time you took to show your work and the process of chasing a short. You're really good at explaining your process. Kudos. I wish I knew electrical the way you do.
That is a great how to video. I greatly appreciate your efforts to explain so many things in detail! I wonder if those that do not offer reasonably good explanations do not do so because they simply cannot do it, they are incapable of explaining what they don't understand themselves.
Man what a great video!! I’ve got an old FoxBody project car I just bought. It’s got a partially installed new body harness. The ecu was fried so I sent it off for repair. They’ve given me a list of pins on the connectors to test before I hook ecu back up. I’ve been trying to find a good procedure for doing that.
You did a great job finding the short. That was crappy work done at the factory. Another example of how Nissan quality has gone down. My wife & I used to drive Maximas & loved them. Now we drive Hondas. Keep up the good work & videos.
Great call with the glue shrink tube. Seales and holds it all in place from the elements so as to not corrode. I worked for Siemens running assembly and test for flow meters. They all go into exstream environments. Not that a car will be there but anything to prevent problems is a plus. Thank You for another learning experience.
Outstanding video. The way you explained things as you where going made it very easy to understand exactly what was going on. You got a new sub.Thank you very much.
car was probably in a accident and when replacing the side airbag the guy pinched that vanity mirror light wire ... good find... not sure if you have a video on how you made that test bulb soldering it and wiring it up, and what different amperage bulbs you use and when or how to use them, would be beneficial to learn from ... thanks, cool video
I have the same type of issue, an older Infiniti with a short to ground that instantly blows the 10 amp Room Lamp fuse. No ignition required. I can't find the energy to trace it so far, once I realized that circuit is linked to all the overhead interior lights plus the trunk light and elsewhere. Maybe this video will give me an idea and jumpstart the motivation.
Excellent knowledge & diagnostic skills & Great job!!! I have a fuse that keeps blowing for my PCM emissions control & it has blown two fuses. Now, I'm wondering what should I check first to correct the problem. Does this mean I have a short somewhere or is something not grounded securely?
Great tip about the tiny bits that stick out when soldering wires together. I have always thought soldering to be the best . some say you should never solder some say always solder. Have you ever given the shrink n seal butt connectors a go. Not the ones with solder inside.👍👍Another great video 😊😊
@@autodiagyt 100% agree! If the harness is properly supported there shouldn't be much movement or vibration anyways. GM is the worst at factory harness supports lol
@@autodiagyt I will have a look for that video. great answer I found an old relay in the garage that I soldered wires directly to decades ago On the advice of the auto electrician that sold it to me. The wires were still on there solid as can be and I never had any starter problems from installing it to scrapping the car years later. It was a 1984 GM Vauxhall cavalier diesel and that sucker vibrated like a jack hammer. That's why he suggested soldering the wires direct lol👍👍👍
@@autodiagyt I had a rep come in and look at me like i had seven heads for actually repairing a wire harness. I always thought it was more common. But hey it keeps my lights on!
Judging by the name on your hoodie I’m guessing your a sand mountain guy lol, I too am a sand mountain resident with a diagnostics shop in RBC great vid very informative electronics can be intimidating for some but a good diagram and logic most problems are really simple
I’ve been doing business in RBC since 2009 , been in the automotive trade since 1994, I’m always trying to learn new methods, techniques, thought processes, I’ve enjoyed your vids, I worked at a local ford dealer on the mountain for years , before I opened my shop in RBC, I would do a lot of diag , programming , and Pats keys for the local used lots I’ll bet we know alot of the same people.
That was more helpful than many vids out there. I was wondering where you get reliable diagrams. Did you have a scanner that can access them? And is it for pros only? My issue with this kind of work is getting past the fundamentals. Knowing what a BCM is or Battery saver relay is, etc. So the test light is connected to reliable ground and acts like a fuse to still protect from further damage? So for me its knowing how to translate a diagram to the actual circuit with certainty. Fixing a known issue is always the "easy" part. But I'll admit to being a "deer in the headlights" when I open a panel or read a fault.
As always great video. Question how you get the after market diagram s? Do I need to pay ? Is this expensive I do my own vehicles that why Thank you sir
How well would an amp clamp work; first around a wire bundle followed by individual wires to find the light bulbs 2 Amps. Also helpful might be a slow pulsing current through the light bulb to assist in locating the short with the amp clamp.
Whats the bulb number and socket on that 10 amp test light? I like that. I have a few that range from 500millamps to 4.5. That one would be nice to add to the arsenal. Great diag brother 👍
Great video. Have a question; when you started probing the connector on the dash, you had one wire stationary and another wire which you were moving around the different circuits. Question is was the stationary wire on 12V? I think this could also be done with a multimeter on continuity and beep mode. Based on your experience, are most of these fault ussually a short to ground, faulty module/connector?? Also , how did you make those probs. A video on that would nice. Awsome content.
Yes wire is 12v, for continuity beep test every device would need to be disconnected to have any accurate test. With a bulb and volt meter I can tell if it's dead short to ground or grounding through a device. My new video about this testing method goes into more detail about this.
Looks like the body module is ground side controlled. Because the power from pin 131 can't make contact with pin 129 unless the body module is allowing power to it at all times.
There's nothing more satisfying than watching someone do something they're good at and also seems to enjoy the process. I could legit watch you work for hours. And you're good looking 😉
I think you can be of great help to the electrical issue I am having on my 09 Porsche cayenne starter relay wiring. The load side "87" wire seems short to the ground. Any suggestions?
Awesome vid! I'm currently trying to find a short in my 3000gt, and was wondering what kind of test light kit are you using here? I'd love to have that same setup if you could share :)
How did you wire up and make that test light? I need one im completely clueless when it comes to electrical and what you did to make that tool. I've seen this tool a few times now and I want to make a test light I can put in the fuse locations to find my short

That was a great case study. You did a great job of breaking the system down in order to find the problem.
This video helped me find the short in my vehicle. The light bulb trick is a great way to test things now that I know. Thanks for your videos.
