There's a Tom Hanks film for every mood. He started out in comedies, then romance, to dramas. If you haven't seen them, I would pick "Splash", one of his early films. For a later movie I'd pick "Apollo 13" based on the true story of Apollo mission. His track record is pretty good with no real failures. Missed you and I hope you're over your bout with Covid soon.

😎👍 If I may state the obvious, you can begin with "Toy Story 4." 🤠 When that whale winked at him, it was a profound moment. 🐳 It was the first time in over four years that he looked at something that actually looked back at him. Of course, there are a lot of great Tom Hanks movies that people are going to be suggesting, but I also want to put in a good word for the director...Between "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" in 1978 all the way through "Polar Express" in 2004, Robert Zemeckis never made a bad film, and most of them are epic. Check out any of them and you won't be disappointed.

Wilson is a manufacturer of sporting goods, and that is the brand of volleyball that arrived, so he just decided to call the volleyball "Wilson". Enough time has passed that he needs a totem to focus and bounce his thoughts off of. It's a coping mechanism that keeps him tethered to his humanity, and helps him practice speaking to something external to himself. Wilson is what he uses to project his negative thoughts onto, and it keeps him sane a little longer instead of losing his mind to loneliness.

At the end, if you look at the crossroads, there are three paved streets and one dirt road, which is where he delivered the package and where the lady in the truck lives. When he looks down the streets, he looks at each paved road first, then finally the dirt road. That is when he smiles. I think we can safely assume that's where he went.

    1. It's a good thing he wasn't strapped in that plane. He would have died.
    2. Can you imagine how much back pay this guy is going to get? He's not a rank and file worker either. He's an executive.
    3. To make himself look like an average out of shape middle aged man Tom Hanks didn't exercise and allowed himself to grow pudgy. Production was then halted for a year so he could lose fifty pounds, work out and grow out his beard and hair for his time spent on the deserted island.
    4. Talk about using realistic tactics to survive.
    5. Wilson is exactly what he needed to maintain sanity.
    6. In a recent interview Hanks says that Chuck went back to Bettina Wings. Inside the opening scene package, among other things, were her divorce papers.
    7. When he's talking to his friend and says, "I had power over nothing...." is what gets to me.
8.Tom Hanks is the GOAT of my lifetime. I'm 62 years old.

7:45 "Why is he in such a hurry?"
    "Why is he yelling?"
"It's OK to be a little late."
He's a senior manager of FedEx.
FedEx had a slogan: "The world on time."
They built that ENTIRE company on the idea that if you ship a package with FedEx, it will arrive on time.
You could choose another company, but choosing FedEx means your package will always be on time.
    Every time.
So you can imagine that this entire company cares about being in a hurry, and it is definitely NOT OK to be a little late.
And as a top manager of that company, he cares about that too.
It's his job and it's his life.
FedEx just opened a brand new office in Moscow.
This is the first time any packages have been shipped by FedEx from Russia to the US.
He's yelling to impress these employees that time is important.
He's not helping because they all have jobs to do and he would get in their way - so he's trying to motivate them to hurry but still letting them do their jobs while he stays out of their way.

Saving Private Ryan is an amazing Spielberg film that stars Tom Hanks. Great reaction. Losing Wilson the volleyball 🏐 (company that makes volleyballs is Wilson) is a great scene because it shows how attached one can become to an imaginary friend or a stuffed animal one might talk to. It's comforting, cathartic, it's like therapy without all the follow-up questions "How does that make you feel?", "Tell me more about that", etc, etc. Just having a friend there helps cope with having absolutely NO ONE as company. And so you bond. And we bond with the characters. So when we lost Wilson, it's like losing a friend: heartbreaking, sad, emotional, depressing, painful. 😩 And we feel Chuck (Tom's character)'s emotions along with him. Imagine being stranded on a deserted island with no one to talk to, no social interaction, no company for 4+ years. Would you start to make up an imaginary friend just to cope? Then losing said imaginary friend. OUCH! 💔😭 And, girl, I was asking myself the same thing when I was watching this movie in theaters in the US in 2000: "WHY AM I SOBBING OVER A FRICKIN' VOLLEYBALLLLLLL????" Your emotions were valid in that moment.

It’s cheesy to say but inside the package was hope, the hope that helped him stay alive (and a way to come full circle from the beginning due to the woman using the wings as her motif). It’s a classic macguffin as the symbolism was more important than its contents. And the open ending is to allow the audience to make up their own conclusion. As for Hanks’ weight loss, it is real. They filmed the movie in two parts, to allow for him to lose the weight and grow the beard in between. And not sure if you caught it or maybe you realized in an unaired segment but the volleyball was named Wilson because that’s the brand name of the ball

Chuck was a top supervisor for FedEx hence why he was always working and why they needed him during the holidays. He was very committed to his job and making sure the packages got delivered on time which isn’t a bad thing especially if you are expecting something important or are paying for express/overnight delivery. You want it to arrive on time.
As with hin still being obsessed with time when he was building the raft, he has experience with sailing as we see in those photographs at the beginning and he knows the right time to set sail with the tides. He had to leave at the right time for it to work otherwise he wouldn’t be able to leave because the tide would be too low or non existent or if the tide was too big it would have destroyed the raft.
The ending with him at the crossroads is him basically at the crossroads of life. He gets to start all over and chose what ever path he wants. He does look at the direction of the lady in her truck and it’s assumed he went back after her.

Great reaction Sessis like always, So many parts of this movie hit me and you touched on everyone. I still can't get the scene out of mind where he's back in his hotel room and looks at all the food on the table and lights the lighter. All the things we take for granted in our life that comes in gross abundance and he had to fight to acquire the simplest pleasures every day for 4 years. I don't think I could have made it. And some fun facts about this movie it was a star-driven project. Hanks read an article about FedEx, which illuminated the fact that massive jets filled with packages were crossing the Pacific Ocean multiple times a day for the shipping company. The actor wondered what would happen if one of those planes went down, and that was the seed from which Cast Away grew. Zemeckis and company began shooting the film in January 1999, and then two months later, production took a break…for over a year. Yes, Cast Away did not shoot again until April 2000. During that time, Hanks lost weight and grew out his hair and beard in order to be able to shoot all the later scenes on the island. For the uninhabited island that Chuck washes up on the shore of, they shot on…an uninhabited island. Although, this one isn’t in the middle of nowhere. Monuriki is an island in the Fiji archipelago. It has since become a tourist attraction. As for the scenes at the ranch, those were shot at Arrington Ranch just south of Canadian, Texas. FedEx was happy to be involved in Cast Away. They provided access to their facilities in Memphis, Los Angeles, and Moscow, not to mention their planes and uniforms. The company’s real CEO even cameos to welcome Chuck back. Keep up the good work

The irony of this movie is really two fold:
1 - Unfastening his seat belt to get the watch SAVED his life.
2 - With many ships looking for recovery and rescue survivors of the plane crash, you would think they would have fancied the idea of perhaps checking out the island, since the currents were flowing that way with the packages and the dead pilots body, just a day or two after the crash.

  • @Slosher52

The ending is purposely open ended. Chuck is literally at a crossroads, meaning he has a decision to make and he can choose to go anywhere he wants. Its the opposite of what he described in the previous scene where he talks about being stuck on an island and not even being able to control how he could end things. It's up to the viewer to decide where he goes, but I think most of us hope he went after the woman.
Also I think what was in the unopened package wasn't as important as what it represented. His job was delivering packages, regardless of what is in it. The unopened package gave him a purpose, a reason to live on.

3:40 He strikes me as constantly in work mode solving problems - and he basically suggests a possible solution/tool to fix the cancer problem, if that isn't caring I don't know what it is. That reaction is more him than some emotional platitude
12:47 You say you would have a hard time coping, but I suspect you would be able to manage somehow.
16:01 Right!? I know you probably don't wanna show him taking more than the belt on camera, but he needs everything he can find.
    17:16 SOS is short blink-short-short -long-long-long-short-short-short
    19:40 Christmas came early:)
24:46 Worst part of the entire movie. All those bloody messy horror movies can't compete with a do it yourself dentist filming every moment. Don't make any more "Saw" movies - Make "Tooth" horror movies!
25:42 the "Shut Up!" to "Wilson" in an instant establishes how much he has come to rely on the ball as a talking partner, as a way to keep himself (somewhat) sane. Love it.
32:55 Here we have a man stranded on an island alone - and the writers still manage to make us cry over the loss of a dear friend. Doesn't get any better than that :)
34:39 Maybe the short hair is just easier to maintain when having a husband, small kid, job and so on?
37:30 He has changed from being a guy moved by outside pressure and events while neglecting people and emotions - On the island he had nothing but time to reflect and deal with his emotions and realize how precious actual human connections are. It's beautiful and subtle.
42:29 Divorce papers Dick and Bettina got divorced Dick moved out. The wings sign at the ranch is altered - Dick is gone.

Great reaction! Keep up the good work! Tom Hanks is such an awesome actor that almost anything he does is great. That being said, "Forrest Gump" won him an oscar for best actor, and also won for best picture. "Saving Private Ryan" is another outstanding performance by Hanks, and an all together great movie. Highly recommend both for your channel, though "Saving Private Ryan" is a World War 2 movie with A LOT of realism about the horrors of battle (just to warn you). On the lighter side, the romantic comedies "You've got mail" and "Sleepless in Seattle" (both starring Hanks with Meg Ryan) are very good also. "Big" is a lighter Hanks movie as well, in which he acts like a 10 year-old kid. "Apollo 13" and "A League of their Own" are also very good. Have fun discovering these movies and seeing how truly talented Tom Hanks is.

I'd recommend watching Tom H in Apollo 13 (historical drama), Sleepless in Seattle (romantic comedy), and Saving Private Ryan (brutal to watch, but perhaps the best and most realistic war movie ever made). Many will suggest Forest Gump, but that one really requires a detailed knowledge of American history in the 1050's - 80's to appreciate what is going on, and what is being parodied. Much of it even goes over the heads of most younger Americans, even though all can still enjoy it on a more superficial level.

    24:10 I know what you're saying here.
And I never correct anybody on their accent unless what they say comes out unintentionally dirty.
You said "I've never had any issues with my teeths" but to almost any English speaker's ear, it sounded like you said "I've never had any issues with my t!ts."
Even the closed captioning spelled it like "t!ts".
    You probably don't want that.
So, to avoid that confusion in the future, remember the word "tooth" and plural "teeth" do not have an 's' at the end.
Also, the 'ee' sound in "teeth" sounds like "these" or "please" or "sleep" or "feet" or "season".
    I hope that helps!

People get laid back, settled in the job and start not doing a good job. I think his job is essentially to "light a fire" under them and get them moving and improve performance again.
