  • In March 2022, the Patriots Point Development Authority Board voted to recycle the ex-USS Clamagore submarine due to safety and environmental concerns. The decision came after more than a decade of examining alternative options.
A contract with Coleen Marine was signed through emergency procurement in August 2022. Work began soon after to prepare the submarine for the trip to Norfolk, VA, where it would be recycled.
We have received several questions about the boat's current status. Here's a video that dives deep into what happened between August and October 2022.

Seeing as they've let go of the clamagore what ship is next on The Chopping Block? Is it going to be USS laffey or Yorktown ?
This is the 3rd ship that was under patriots points care to be scrapped

I am glad they are taking everything of value out of this submarine and putting it on display. That's what I was hoping they would do.

So sad, it’d been nice if it would have been placed on land.

Where? It’s about 350 foot long. It’s dripping in hazardous waste.Y’all need to watch more of there videos- it would of costed them 10 million bucks to drag her on land and keep her there. It’s easy to get all mad and point fingers without knowing anything. Nobody wanted clamagore,. Nobody was going to save it.

@@orringallagher2666 In the lot next to parking or in place of the out door Vietnam war exhibit and 326ft after her GUPPY III conversion was finished in 63. Anyways moving on to the hazardous waste part. Yes, you are right about this to a certain extent. All ships have harmful chemicals and substances on board one way or another, yes including museum ships.
While most of this was removed during the ships decommissioning, but not all of it was. In 2017 Yorktown had 16,000 gallons of fuel and hazardous liquids removed. Followed by Clamagore being pumped and cleaned in 2018.
Well you're entitled to your opinion, but the finger pointing is duly justified. Patriots Point has an obligation to take care of their ships and that means all of them. Anyways moving on, people did want Clamagore from the veterans who served on the boat to the children who came to visit.
There have been groups that were willing to come out and do repairs for free all the way to asking Patriots Point to let them take it off their hands. I don't think CRAMA would have wasted there money on a lawsuit in 2019 if they did not care. The point here is every time Patriots Point was made a offer they shot it down.

@@up448sp4449 You have no idea what you’re talking about. It would cost over $10 million dollars to remove that pier, dredge, create a pathway and rail system large enough to move that boat, then get two or so 100 ton cranes to haul that submarine on land. Guess what? HAZMAT is more than just fuel. There would still be the 500 batteries on board that weight 1000 pounds a piece, the entire insides is full of PCBs, asbestos, heavy metals, and the dang thing would STILL continue to rust away on land! They’d have to completely overhaul the hull!!!. CRAMA never did anything for Clamagore, ever. They never done no maintenance nor offered any serious money to repair her. Their a joke. Like I said you don’t know what you’re talking about. And you obviously don’t watch tv cause the governor is paying big money to do an hazmat study on Yorktown cause he said it’s got 100 thousand gallons of fuel still on her with tons of other hazmat. You should read more and post less.

@@up448sp4449 Placing a ship on land in effort of "Long term preservation" is a HORRIBLE idea. 1.) Shes over 300+ft long and displaces more than 1,500 tons. So A.) how do you propose lifting such a vessel out of her moorings and onto land? B.) Where on the property could she be displayed? and C.) Where do you suppose they would have the money for that in first place? Not only are you going to hypothetically be taking the vessel out of water, but then you need to also construct some form of blocks to hold the ship on, and ensure they can withstand hurricane conditions. 2.) Ships are not meant to be out of water for extended periods of time, it compromises the structural integrity of the ship, and causes permanent damage.

No dude you're genuinely just an angry person apparently. Looking to fight with people in a TH-cam comment section. I genuinely don't care if you were a sailor or worked in the Marine industry. That doesn't mean that you're better then everyone and it doesn't make your opinion any more important on the internet.
Congratulations you talk to staff too, so did I. Unfortunately my conversation weren't as productive. I would either get the bog standard oh "Patriots Point is doing everything in their power or I don't know." My stake in the matter is my genuine concern about the ships and their care. Along with there continuing worsening state. With a heavy heart I can accept the fact that Clamagore is gone.
But the point still stands, that she should have never been allowed to get to that state in the first place. I think my biggest problem was Patriots Point as a whole is their lack of transparency and willingness to work with the general public.
