  • Robert Winters boarded the USS Clamagore submarine 50 years after serving aboard the boat. Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum filmed his visit and reactions to seeing areas aboard the vessel where he worked in 1971.
This video is part of the Yorktown Television series produced by Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum. The museum is located in Mount Pleasant, S.C. Visit www.patriotspoint.org for more information.

I’ve been to patriots point. It’s a good visit. A lot of work is put in to preserve our history. I highly recommend a visit.

From one submarine veteran to another, I'll bet Mr. Winters was shocked to see the horrible condition that Patriot's Point complete negligence has allowed Clamagore to get to. I know I was shocked seeing it rotting away when I visited there this past January compared to what it used to be like when I was stationed in Charleston on an SSBN back in the day.

To be able to visit a museum ship that you served on must be an awesome feeling. The two I served on have been scrapped!

My great grandpa was on the laffey im the Korean war in the 50s he served in 1952-55. He love his ship. The ship that would not die.

If I am not mistaken Mr. Winters and I served on the Clamagore at the same time. I served aboard from late October 1971 until late February 1973 and was one of two storekeepers. I seemed to recall him having a bit of a beard though. He said his rack was in the forward torpedo room and I had a sky rack and a top bunk ( hot bunked ) in the after torpedo room. Good to see you doing well Mr. Winters.

I was stationed in Charleston from June '65 to August '67 aboard the USS Robert H. McCard DD 822. I wish I could visit her again but the US gave her to the Turkish Navy and they eventually scrapped her. That was so sad. I heard some of her gear was used to restore the USS Orleck. She's a museum ship in Jacksonville now.

We had our 25th Reunion there in 2015. Charleston sure has changed. I did find the first apartment my new wife and I lived in while we were there. We lived in another one but the neighborhood had changed so much I couldn't recognize it from the others.

Can anyone tell me of any updates on this submarine is it going to be saved or is it going to be sunk as a reef? I hopefully I prefer the former

I hear that when a Veteran returns to tour a sub it feels strange w/o the sound and smell of the engine.

0:22, the image on the left is German U-boats not American submarines

I'm confused. Is this Submarine going to be sunk at all or not? They are acting like you will be able to take a tour anytime and for the future.

It was there last week, but closed. I'd love to know what the plan is, I gather nobody knows. It seems the money marked for her sinking was used for the museum's other operating costs due to low revenue from the pandemic.

I was a Coastie going to Fleet Sonar School in 1972/73 and saw USS Clamagore decommed in 1973. All the diesel boats in Key West were decommed n the spring of 1973. The only surviving diesel fleet boat from Key West I believe is still operational (USS Cutlass) in Taiwan.

@@tullibee No but my grandfather was. I was born in 89, long after my grandfather retired and Grenadier was scrapped. I've seen Requin and plan to see Torsk soon.
If I recall right, my grandfather said he and the XO's never got along. He was an enlisted engineer. But if your dad is still around, my grandfather was Richard W. Martin
