    Wooow! Love everything Derwent. I would love to buy them all. But I am currently in a "use, not buy" phase. I have so many unused art supplies and I am trying to actually make more art instead of buying more art supplies.

    I would love more videos about using the graphitint blocks! I just ordered a set with the new colors. I have the smaller set of Inktense pencils as well, but haven't been using them. More videos using them would be helpful as well! On your recommendation, I also have sets of Mungyo soft pastels and Paul Ruebens oil pastels on their way.

    You're pure joy over the water-soluble graphite is contagious! The Finetec metallic paints offer an empty tin. Derwent should look at the success of their empty tin, and listen to your advice.

  • @LonitaFraser
    @LonitaFraser ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I can get a few of the items via Amazon Canada for less than what you pay off the Derwent site. I was able to get the the graphitint, the Inktense, and the new coloured charcoal (I have the old set). I can't get the graphite grey set yet, but I have the old coloured ones.
    Cult Pens in the UK has some of them open stock.
    If you're using any of the smudgey ones in watercolour paintings, if you're using them in the background, wait till they dry then cover it in clear watercolour ground and paint over them.

      @LonitaFraser ปีที่แล้ว

      Update: I now have every XL set except the XL Graphite grey tin. The only options so far are to buy it off Cult Pens or the Derwent site, both of which are way too pricey. I wonder why that's the set that's the elusive one. No seller in Canada has any of the new XL sets. Bum.

      @@arlyhelm6219 Watercolour ground has an absorbent material in it so any surface primed with it is suitable for taking watercolour/gouache. Gesso works for acrylic/oils.

    these look fun. I have all of them in pencils I so I can not justify buying them right now, but I am not going to lie, I really want the graphitint blocks old and new so I will probably get them. I have been saving to buy the additional inktense when they release in US. I barely use them though but only because I was a beginning when I first got them and never really figured them out. I have gotten a lot more advanced now though and have gotten back into pastels and doing alcohol washes with them so it is probably time to get them out and work with them again.

    I've seen these but never really know how I'd use them. So this was a fascinating video. Thank you Lindsay. Personally I'd love to see a video on how to use the new 12 set. If you want to create a custom mix of colours but don't have the right tin, have you considered slicing a block in half and adding in half another...12 colours into a 6 slot tin...just my half a million dollar idea😊. Lindsay, I wanted to ask you to consider putting together an Intkense course. I do love them but found there is a definite learning curve, especially to the pencils both in blending out a single color, and in mixing colors, so I wanted to see if you would consider developing a teachable course on this medium. I greatly appreciate how much you value only buying supplies that you will actually use, but I do think, in pencil format because they too or easily portable, that this is a fun, vibrant medium. Thank you in advance for your consideration!!!

    I'm excited for the new Graphite XL Blocks since I've been looking for a water-soluble graphite that washes out smoothly. I've been experimenting with the Viarco tin which is fun to play with but the graphite is very shiny and kinda chunky. And it just doesn't dissolve in water or layer like I had hoped it would. These new Graphite Blocks may be just the thing I've been looking for.

    The foam in the lids should help prevent breakage a lot. Nice to see attention to detail!
    I may have to try these! I love Inktense, especially the water soluble ones.
    I love the gray scale, charcoal set and the pencil set!!! I'm going to have to budget for a couple of sets. I love that we can buy the pencils open stock! There's always that color or colors we use again and again. Our go-to colors that we love so much! :)😊
    On another note... 🌀
    Lindsay, please monitor your weather! Looks like hurricane Lee, or the remnants of it may be headed your way next weekend. I monitor weather & relay messages in emergencies all over the US, and this storm is a very serious storm. I hope it stays out at sea (a "fish storm"), but it may not. This is a very large, very powerful storm. Heads up!

They seem to reactivate even after dry… I know when working on fabric using textile medium is the key. What about paper though?? I thought the point of the Inktense series was that they were light-fast and waterproof/permanent? Can be used on fabric so washable. Like you could put artwork on the back of a jeans jacket, quilt etc.
    I thought the true primary colors eere cyan magenta and yellow?
    I have a 12 set of Prismacolor pencils but it has red and i cannot make a pink. With magenta and yellow you can make pink and red. But you can't get pink from red. It also had the wrong yellow. The blue pencil was the only primary it had.
    I'd like to see if you can make a pink with either the 6 set or 12 set of blocks. Maybe in a short?
    I would also like to see you use them on fabric. Maybe plsin bandanas or fabric napkins. And see how the white works. Is that how they get pink? Opaque?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are permanent like a marker (colorfast) is but not lightfast (but some colors are.) Yes, cyan, magenta and yellow are true primaries and in the 12 inktense set. I think they decide what goes in the set buy sales popularity.

    Hullo Lindsay, I have been wondering about how the “blocks” stay viable when you wet them to get the color off but then it is permanent when it dries on paper? What keeps the blocks from sealing over after they are wetted down? I have even seen other artists dunk the smaller blocks into cups of water to get a BIG pigment lay down and swoosh it about the paper? Why is the block not sealed against further use? Well there’s a conundrum for today. Enjoy!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's needs a porous surface to be permanent. It won't be permanent on plastic or glass but it will on paper and fabric, like a dye. But like a dye all colors are not lightfast so if that is important you want to look at the lightfast ratings and buy open stock.

    I’m probably gonna pick up a tinted graphite block one day. Open stock in person. I want to play with the product but I don’t tend to use my CP type blocks at all, more a fan of the idea than the reality. Filling in backgrounds quickly is a good concept - but edges catch and it’s just messy.

    Lindsay I recently purchased a box of Art supplies, in the bottom of the box I found small glass vials of powder form pigments. Is it possible to make these powder pigments into water color and if yes what would you recommend to formulate to put in pans?

      Yes, mix them with gum arabic and glycerin and honey. There are many tutorials online for diy watercolors.

    Hi, quick question, if you wet the inktense blocks directly, wouldn't they dry afterwards and become unusable? Or are they only permanent when put on paper.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They only become permanent on a porous surface so you can rewet them on a glass or plastic palette and they don't seal over but if you apply them to paper or cloth they will set and not rewet. Think of them like a fabric dye.

      I'd say they are the same as the blocks. I agree, the pencils are cleaner and more transparent that the blocks and pan paints. The formulations are slightly different according to my detwent rep.

    I love this stuff; however, I wish you would ask Derwent what is in their water soluble graphite because it isn't graphite. Graphite is NOT soluble in water. There are no dipoles in graphite and therefore non-polar. Meaning: graphite absolutely cannot be and absolutely is NOT water soluble. Hence why I use it as a lubricant in machinery instead of grease. whatever these glorious and amazing products are, and to be clear I love them and use the "water soluble" graphite on the daily, but they are not graphite. I'm dying to know what it is. I've been trying to figure out out for years. Without doing a chemical analysis on it. Ever since I stumbled on a pencil with the image of a paintbrush on it. I'm curious if it's just dye mixed with clay, but then what's the sheen? If mica that's the finest ground mica I've ever seen in my life.
    If anyone is reading this and curious: in chemistry there are rules just as in physics, law, society, etc. There is a like- dissolves- like rule. Non-polars absolutely CANNOT be dissolved by polars. It's absolutely physically impossible. NOT improbable, but impossible. Graphite goes beyond that. It isn't even soluble in like-non-polar chemicals. Why, you may be asking yourself. Because it is a giant covalent structure, or macromolecule. As a result, it is too large to form a homogeneous mixture with a solvent. The covalent bonds between carbons are too strong for any attractions from the solvent.
    Which makes graphite special. Well, that and the fact that you are drawing and writing with diamonds. Graphite has the same structure as diamonds. It just hasn't been compressed enough yet to finish the process. If graphite and diamonds were human, one could think of graphite as the baby in uteral while the birth of said baby is the diamond in its raw state. As it ages and the parent educates the child each new synapse formed shapes the diamond. Each new year a bit more polish. By adulthood we now see a fine diamond shining bright and strong. Giving joy and radiance to those around it.
    All the more reason to buy, use, romanticize, theologize, philosophize, idealize and throughly enjoy these products.

      I get the chemistry. I worked in the rubber industry for years as a research chemist. Thank you for explaining the chemistry for those who might have questioned the graphite content. Could it be ground down and powdered graphite mixed with a binder like gum arabic like watercolors are made. They grind up minerals and pigments to make paint, couldn't graphite be the same?

    The Derwent claim that Inktense is “permanent” on fabric is only partly true. Yes, you can wet fabric with WATER after the color has dried. But if you wash fabric colored with Inktense, using even tiny amounts of a super gentle detergent, the color washes out dramatically. So any fiber artists who create textile pieces that may need to be laundered from time to time-quilts and wearable art, for example-should be VERY cautious about Inktense, and test, test, test their planned use.
