Smelly Ductless

  • Bryan solves a smelly ductless system problem using Refrigeration Technologies products.
Ductless systems need regular cleaning, but the coil often gets a strange odor even when the blower wheel isn't too dirty. We've found that Viper EVAP+ works very well on the evaporator coil. EVAP+ is a non-toxic, non-rinsing, enzyme-based cleaner that doesn't require dilution.
The Viper Pan & Drain Treatment works well in the drain pan and on the bottom row of the evaporator coil. The Pan & Drain Treatment won't negatively interact with the EVAP+, so you can use both at the same time.
Both products have a very mild smell and use natural enzymes to break down smelly organisms, making them an attractive option.
Of course, if you see visible soil, you'll want to use a bib kit and clean the ductless evaporator coil in place.

Yeah that green viper E cleaner works wonders on visibly clean evaporators with that strange smelly socks odour. I've got MHI splits and they can be set to a self clean mode, all it does is run the evap fan very slowly for about 1 hour after the unit is turned off with the remote, drys out the coil and fins, prevents most of that bacteria growing.

I was told by the fella that installed our unit its best to constantly keep the fans going to avoid the condensation to collect and form funk...gotta love it

I found having the fan on, especially on high, merely spits the water back into the air, raising the humidity. Three years of dealing with this now.

I’m going to try using the dehumidifier setting to build up condensation while the fan stays super slow to not spit the stuff out.

No smell on dehumidify setting in my Mitsubishi, but it brings the temp down to the high 50s. It's insane.

thank you for the tip! Cleaned all my units using vinegar and water mix. Now one of them is starting to smell after only 1 month! The smell is swampy...I looked for this product, how can a non-tech purchase it? What could be causing the smell after only 1 month?

Great video. In view of all the videos like this and others showing the mold buildup in mini split system, why would anyone install these units. I reside in a log cabin and I was planning to install a mini split system-NOT NOW!

Because they're incredibly efficient, they can be installed in a day, they can be your primary heat, No duct work is required, etc. It would be a great option specifically for a log cabin.

Hi, I have recently reinstalled my window ac unit, I have that sweet funky smell I think it may because I don’t have it tilted for that water to run out. It’s been off for a few days I think the water has been sitting in the front and became stagnate possibly. I have read that it could be a leak in the system I’m hoping it’s not that.

I'm having the same issue. A sour smell is the best way to describe it. Tried all kinds of cleaners including the viper evap+ without any luck. The blower wheel also builds up debris over time, it can add to the bad smell, looks like clumps of mold etc...And make sure the drain line is clear, I have cleaned the drain lines on 2 of my 5, that did clog over the years, preventive maintenance can keep them from clogging, gunky crap grew in them, depending on the drain hose used, different stuff gunk them up. Clean tygon grows some foul stuff, maybe the corrugated drain lines sold as minisplit drain is actually better, I use both types, it doesn't kink, to create reduced areas, and different plastic, more immune to growth of funky molds etc...
