What Broke The U.S. Immigration System?

  • 2023 saw record-breaking numbers of migrant crossings at the southwestern border, with Border Patrol reporting nearly 250,000 encounters in December alone. But today, less than 1% of those looking to reside permanently in the U.S. can do so legally, according to CATO. The Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse estimates that the immigration court currently has a backlog of over 3 million cases. So how did the immigration system in the U.S. get so broken? And can it ever be fixed?
In the U.S., 62.6% of permanent resident, or “green,” cards go toward family-sponsored immigrants, compared with just 21.1% for employment-based sponsorships, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Cato Institute estimates that just 1 in 1,500 new hires in the U.S. receives a green card through employment sponsorship programs.
The U.S. legal immigration system is in dire need of reform to make it work for the U.S. economy, experts say.
“I think the limitations for the numbers of annual immigrants was last updated in 1990 when our population was smaller and when the kinds of work that we did in this country was different,” Brown said.
Simon Hankinson, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, said, “What I would like to see are reforms to make the majority of people who come here legally as immigrants to come because our economy needs them.”
Watch the video to see why the U.S. is having so much trouble solving the immigration crisis.

I wonder if it’s partially due to housing limitations. I didn’t look up exact numbers but it seems we have a somewhat unique issue, in the US, where we have a lot of real estate that’s not developed let alone options for residency & quality of living (eg: Midwestern territory, blank and open for infrastructure development). If the resources were made available for such a project; it would provide a very quick outlet for resettlement, further warranting an increase in the immigrant-count/annum limit. But idk, economics is out of my wheelhouse; wouldn’t be surprised if I was missing quite a few details

Hey there 👋 great work! Happy to have you here.
Finance degree here; more migrants means higher demand on housing; meaning higher rents and home costs. More people working means a higher demand on a lower amount of goods; causing a rise in all prices.

@@magicxsquare_ This is not true. You're finance degree didn't teach you enough about economics and labor demographics. As the U.S. population trends towards having more retirees, we need more people of working age to fill in key roles such as nursing, construction, farm work, etc. There's currently a higher demand for these jobs than ever before.
Housing would literally be solved if we simply built more homes. Bottlenecks contributing to low housing supply are material shortages, labor shortages, and NIMBYISM. If we block migrants that are propping up our labor markets, we're going to be in for a shitshow in the next 10-15 years when the demographic skews even more towards the elderly and not enough people to care for them / fill in the gaps.

    • @TheSingingGuitar

@@magicxsquare_ that might be true under normal circumstances. The aging population and Covid really put us behind as far as a young, working population goes. We need people to work. Until AI, robotics and automation make up for the lost productivity, we will need people to do low skill jobs. This is not even debatable at this point. The question is what’s the most ideal way to get young workers and be able to fill the void that boomers are leaving considering how small gen X is. You need more than finance to see the big picture. Thanks for the kind words by the way and I could be wrong about my entire assessment. Have a great day!😊

With the progression of robotics almost all migrant jobs are being replaced. We have chef robots that can now cook every meal; we have robots that can pick every fruit tree and sort it; we also can 3D print houses…
The amount of labor required is dropping significantly for low skilled jobs.
Unemployment is tremendously good for inflation; dropping the demand on goods causing higher supply dropping all prices.
Having people fill every single job is not good for our country and is economics 101. Literally what brought down Roman Empire 😂

The truth is there's no pipeline for jobs for the citizens already here. Why don't we see these jobs that need to be filled? Why doesn't the news add it on their websites to easily find? But if a migrant comes to the US, the NGO's and etc points them in the direction of jobs that need to be filled??? This doesn't make complete sense at all. It is the strategy of forcing political change to societal collapse through orchestrated crises. The right to seek asylum was incorporated into international law following the atrocities of World War II. Congress adopted key provisions of the Geneva Refugee Convention (including the international definition of a refugee) into U.S. immigration law when it passed the Refugee Act of 1980. Not only does the US have an international legal obligation to do so, based on the requirement of complying with the object and purpose of the 1951 Refugee Convention, and implementing legal obligations in good faith, it has an obligation to do so under its own domestic law. Anyone can apply for asylum. Normally, however, it is a person who considers themselves at risk of serious harm in their country of origin, or who is compelled to leave their country in search of safety in another country. As a signatory to the 1967 Protocol, and through U.S. immigration law, the United States has legal obligations to provide protection to those who qualify as refugees. The Refugee Act established two paths to obtain refugee status-either from abroad as a resettled refugee or in the United States as an asylum seeker. Similar to a refugee, an asylum seeker is someone who may be in search of protection due to dangers in his or her home country. While every refugee is initially an asylum seeker, not every asylum seeker will ultimately be recognized as a refugee. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services made changes that affirmative asylum applicants must bring an interpreter to their asylum interview if they are not fluent in English or wish to proceed with their interview in a language other than English. Unfortunately, it hasn’t slowed things down.

I’m a legal immigrant who received an advanced degree here, working here and paid perhaps hundreds of thousands of tax dollars throughout my career. One day I had to visit the immigration office to get some work done. Upon my arrival, there was an extremely long line that lasted several blocks waiting outside. Luckily, I asked the security guards and there was a separate line for legal immigrants (with 3 people). The other line was presumably undocumented immigrants seeking asylum. I’m glad I asked and didn’t wait in the wrong line.
I guess it’s a dilemma for every (legal) immigrant. While most of us agree that America needs a rule based system, and the rules for legal immigration should be easier, not harder. In the meantime, it’s not the best policy to accept unlimited undocumented immigrants, and those resources should be used to help the legal immigration first. However, we are also concerned about the xenophobia the other side was trying to promote. The leaders from the other side are increasingly hostile towards legal immigrants as well. It’s really difficult for us legal immigrants to survive in America, despite we contributed a lot here.
