Mr. Beat would you consider doing a mini biography video on William Goebel? He’s the only American governor to ever be assassinated in office, and his story is very interesting. He fought and won a duel against a former Confederate soldier over road tolls, initially lost his election, got the results overturned, was shot the day before his inauguration, almost caused a civil war in Kentucky, and then died a few days later.
I also like the story of Jim Leavelle, who was escorting Lee Harvey Oswald in the Dallas Police Headquarters when he got shot by Jack Ruby, Jim has many interesting tales although most of them aren't political. Like for example he was almost fatally hit by a rogue wave in pearl harbor, he accidentally shot a guy named Bob Portner while showing how L.C Graves tried to grab Jack Ruby's gun, he lost an eye, etc etc. And the man lived to 100. But he isn't anything to make an entire video about I guess, William Goebel is, though

"You can live in Germany, Turkey, or Japan, but you can't become a German, a Turk, or a Japanese. But anyone, from any corner of the earth, can come live in America and become an American". ~ Ronald Reagan Pretty inspirational quote.
@@BobPantsSpongeSquare97And Brazil, or Canada, or Argentina, or Australia, or New Zealand, or South Africa, or Singapore or whatever. Maybe now the United Kingdom as well.
Although I understand the main message that quote is trying to convey, some claims in the quote are not true. For example in Germany, "Being German" doesn't specifically have anything to do with race. Cem Özdemir, who is the current agriculture minister of Germany, is of Turkish descent, he is the children of immigrants but he is still considered to be German and he identifies as a German. Similarly in Turkey, there are many people who are of Kurdish, Circassian ethnicity who consider themselves to be Turkish and they are regarded as Turkish by law.
Which is the force what makes the nation truly great and adaptive to all sorts of sociological global economic fluctuations. Imagine the United States without immigrants during World War II? During the initial rollout of NAFTA? During the silicone Valley tech boom? During the expansion of biotech industries throughout the world? Hell, just imagine America without Chinese restaurants, the best damn pizza in the world, all you can eat sushi buffets, the kolache Factory, cinco de mayo, st Patrick’s day, Chicano culture, rap and hip-hop and country and bluegrass music. Everything we’ve absorbed, assimilated, improved, and embraced is almost entirely immigrant influenced. What a shame that some want to stifle and restrict the very diversity which makes every American human a better, more enriched person.

Great video as usual Mr Beat! As an Irish man, I just wanted to talk about something you said about Ireland in the video. 🇮🇪 The Great Famine took place between 1845-1852. Before this event the population of Ireland was around 8.5 million. The Famine took the lives of 1 million while another 1 million emigrated creating what we now call the Irish Diaspora which is estimated to be about 80 million people today, including 33 million in the US alone! Sustained emigration took place all the way up until around the 1960s when our population hit its lowest point of around 2.5 - 3 million. That’s right, our population had more than halved since the Famine. It was only in the 1960s and 1970s that Ireland began to see significant economic changes and growth and with it came a boost in population. Today, our population sits at around 5.2 million. This number shows the effect the Great Famine had on our country. We still haven’t recovered in population since and it was 172 years ago. It’s also worth noting that many in Ireland (including myself admittedly) believe that there wasn’t a Famine in Ireland in 1845 as much as there was an attempted genocide committed by the British Empire. It’s believed there was more than enough food in the country at the time but it was being shipped out to feed people elsewhere. Many believe it was at the time, one of the largest man-made famines of all time. This however, is a debate for another time… Thank you for all the great videos Mr Beat, I’m a an avid subscriber all the way from Ireland 🇮🇪 Keep them coming!
He's a silly liberal, America has over 340 million people in 2024 and that isn't even counting the illegals and we have millions. Just to give you an idea, we had about 282 million people in 2000. Our immigration issues are a direct result of our own foreign policies. An alarming segment of our populace does not have any concept of consequences even on a personal level, let alone a national one. Flexing your geopolitical muscle by meddling in the affairs of less-powerful nations, will come back to haunt you. It's messy and unfortunate, but I think the least we can do (other than voting) is just being kind to people and acknowledging their struggles. This country would not exist without immigrants, and our continued economic success relies on immigration.
Super true. The United States, its government agencies, and corporations have meddled in the political and economic affairs of countries in South and Central America. Crazy to think that many Americans now don’t know this.
I disagree more than agree. It is most apparently true in certain Latin American cases, but in general I think the narrative of the US "meddling in the affairs of less-powerful nations" is too often used to deprive those countries agency and responsibility over their own issues. It is too easy to scapegoat the big countries like the US, Russia, China etc.

My paternal great grandmother through my paternal grandfather had ancestors from Prussia, even from the parts of Prussia that are now Polish. They were Mennonites and originally moved to a colony in Ukraine for a while before coming to Kansas. When they made their way to California in the 1910s they took up ranching. You should talk about documented dreamers. These are the children of legal immigrants who come to the US as young children, apply for permanent residency legally as children, but due to the backlogs caused by per country caps(specifically for Asian countries, primarily India and China), they turn 21 before they receive it and are no longer allowed to be in the US since they lose their status since they are no longer considered children under immigration law, thus they have deport themselves despite growing up here legally and following all the laws regarding applying for permanent residency
That's what people don't get about the immigration system. You will see comments everywhere talking about 'Oh, why don't she/he just apply?'. LOL. If it's that simple.
It seems the real problem is why the entire family isn't accepted for legal immigration all at once in the first place. If they have to wait a few extra years to clear some backlogs, that's better than only granting legal immigration status partially among families.
America can't keep taking in so many people, it's just common sense, we have added almost 60 million people since 2000 and we have a declining middle class. Do liberals want to see the country collapse?

@@kingace6186 I actually don't think so - they didn't flee because they wanted religious freedom, they fled because they didn't want to be killed for being protestants. They wanted everyone to be protestant, and had spent the previous decades in France trying to kill catholics and force them to be protestant, they just lost that struggle. They would probably consider me to be worse than a catholic (the people they had been trying to kill). I don't care what other people worship, but they certainly did.

Wait, for the UAE and Saudi Arabian having a higher immigration rate/% of immigrants rate, is this including migrant labor under temporary contracts? From my understanding several of the countries you cited have high rates of migrant labor that is contractually time bound based upon the projects they are working on. One thing that gets missed a lot in immigration debates is the immigration from Asia. My mother worked with a Christian charity that went to "massage parlors" that were mostly staffed by Asian women (my mom is fluent in Chinese so she was able to speak to some of them in their native language). These women were told they could get a well paying job in America only to find out that they were being forced into prostitution and that their legal documents were taken away. Many of these women are stuck in the United States and subjected to sexual slavery. This does not get discussed nearly as much as voluntary immigration coming from the southern border. I guess it doesn't sell as well? Very weird considering just how obviously evil it is. Should unite the religious right and the social justice left.
Incredibly minor error at 11:12 - Puritans and Presbyterians are types of Calvinists, so mentioning Calvinists as if they were a separate group is slightly misleading.
Americans came and created a new government and society, they didn't want to leech off a system already created. What is happening today is more like parasitism.
The new roommates lower wages for the least skilled jobs and in an increasing number of states are eligible for taxpayer benefits. You can pay for them if you want.

Great video! I used to teach citizenship classes to immigrants prior to the pandemic and my wife is an immigrant from Siberia. I can attest to how difficult, time-consuming, and expensive trying to immigrate to this country legally can be even under the best circumstances, especially if citizenship is the end goal. The vast majority of my own ancestors arrived prior to the Civil War, with some arriving as far back as 1635 Jamestown, so most of them arrived before well the increasingly strict national immigration restrictions began to materialize at the end of the 19th century.
Im an immigrant from Iraq. We came here in 2012. Fitting in was a little difficult (especially as a teen) but I couldn't be more grateful for the life I've gotten in the US compared to what my life would've been in the old country.
Yes I am an immigrant from Canada. It’s a long, arduous, and expensive process but I’m glad I did it so I can be with my spouse. Love your videos keep it up.
The various asian exclusion acts are fascinating to me because had they not happened, it's likely the U.S. could be significantly more Asian American than it is today. Some states like Nevada were over 50% Chinese in 1880, while California was around 10%. Had this growth continued well into the 20th century, the population of East and Southeast Asian immigrants in the Western United States would likely have skyrocketed due to the immense chaos in Asia that would likely spur waves of migrants out of places suffering from war, famine, or dictatorship. I think places like the West coast, California central valley, or Rockies could be very Asian, similar to how places on the East coast are very White (European descendant). Perhaps we see a sort of convergence of European immigrants moving Westward from the east coast and Asian immigrants moving Eastward from the west coast at around the Great Plains.
Amazing video as usual! Just a tiny note: UAE and Saudi Arabia have such high percentages of immigrants because there's no way for immigrants to become citizens there. They are even referred to as 'foreigners' rather than immigrants.
I'm an immigrant and I use your channel to familiarize myself on American history which I find so interesting. heck it would also help me pass that civic test required to get citizenship.
I'm a child of immigrants. Both of them love this country very much. They aren't drug smugglers, terrorists, or invaders. They aren't 'corrupting the blood of the country.' They pay their taxes, work hard, and learned English. Thank you Mr. Beat for covering this in a responsible manner.
Nobody is saying all immigrants are drug dealers. The thing is though, some of them are. America 100 percent supports legal immigration, but it’s illegal immigration that is a danger to our country. People could have unknown criminal history, be wanted by the law, or smuggling drugs. Like I said, I know all illegal immigrant aren’t dangerous people, but some are.
Those are people nobody has a problem with. It's the people that are that are the problem. They do exist, and it's even worse in Europe. It's not failed integration because every country has the same problem.

Not only in the US, but also in the affluent West in general, there is a funny form of mental gymnastics at play whereby it was more than okay to have been an immigrant in the past but, somewhere down the line, immigration became a bad thing. Being nice has nothing to do with it, we have added about 60 million people since 2000 and that is a problem. We have to stop adding people until we fix many other problems, we have 340 million people not counting the millions of illegals, we have a declining middle class and citizens that need help. It's just common sense and the left has lost that for whatever reason when it comes to this issue.
I think this is a very informative video, however I feel like you could've elaborated a bit more on why so many immigrants from South & Central America are currently coming to the US. I know it's a larger topic that would probably require a video of it's own, but I think it's important context. The US paints it as bad that they're coming here, but never discuss how the economic problems that many of these countries face are the direct result of US (or rather CIA) meddling throughout the 20th century.
The minute the United States stopped meddling in El Salvador, Mexico, Chile, Peru, and Nicaragua immigrants stopped coming as much. That should tell you everything. Most immigrants from Latin America today are from Venezuela, which is under a U.S. blockade. Yes the Maduro regime has to take a lot of the blame but the United States is not helping things
Not defending what the American government has done in those countries, but we didn't do it as citizens, and we can't keep taking people in. It's common sense, we need many things fixed before we accept new people.
@EddieHenderson92 "we need many things fixed" which would require tax dollars which having more people would provide 🤔. Not saying you're one of these people, but the same people who say "no one wants to work anymore" are the same that want to deny immigrants (people coming here willing to work).

"You can live in Germany, Turkey, or Japan, but you can't become a German, a Turk, or a Japanese. But anyone, from any corner of the earth, can come live in America and become an American".

It would be inspirational if it was true lol Germany and Turkey have many immigrant populations who are viewed as fully German/Turkish today
Reagan was right about immigration.
Great Video Matt, one of your best
Woah, I'm so glad you think so!
It’s the large number of different immigration groups that makes a nation truly diverse.
Indeed

The Great Famine took place between 1845-1852.
This however, is a debate for another time…
Thank you for all the great videos Mr Beat, I’m a an avid subscriber all the way from Ireland 🇮🇪

@@stardust86x that’s pretty cool! : D. My family history here fluctuates back and forth, sometimes depending on the line. Despite my Dad’s Matrilineal line coming in the 1890s from Germany, my 2nd great grandfather on my paternal grandma’s line, Friedrich, married a French woman (which, heh, I have to wonder the rate at which that occurred back in that time frame considering the rivalry).
As for my Mom’s side, my Great Grandfather on my Mom’s patrilineal line served in the First World War and Russian Civil War in the British army. He came to Ellis Island in November 1921 and made his way to Texas where he met my Great Grandmother.
That deserves an entire video
That's messed up.
