- Kevin Costner’s Horizon might be the most ambitious movie undertaking since Lord of the Rings. Think about it - Kevin Costner has sunk a huge chunk of his own personal fortune into making an epic Western saga, with a second movie only weeks away from hitting theatres, regardless of whether or not the first makes him any money. If that weren’t enough, he’s already started shooting pieces of the third film, and he’s sworn he’ll also be making a fourth film as well. Given the scope of his ambitions, it’s hard to truly judge Horizon - Chapter 1 as a standalone film, with it so clearly part of a much bigger whole.

My wife and I both saw it and really enjoyed it. I urge people to forget the reviews and see it. We need more movies with no super heros .

I really loved this movie! The scope of the movie, the beautiful scenery the wonderful score of the movie, i just loved it. Mr. Costner took the time to flesh out all the characters. So many films now days rush you through the film with no time to digest what you're seeing, as if they're afraid to let there be a quiet moment. But it's the calm before the storm, I'm very sure of that. I can't wait for the next chapter! Thank you for a wonderful movie!
This movie was a banger I liked it alot and can’t wait for whats to come.

@@tiphainec5055 Yea thats what I meant 3 and 4. First two obviously are finished as there is a release date. If 3 and 4 don't come out it will be another Yellowstone part 2. Will have even more of a chilling effect on whats left of the fan base. Many are waiting to see if 4 is ever made before investing any time in a dead end series like Yellowstone.
Finally! A great movie in the theaters! I was hesitant because, well movies haven't had a great track record lately. I can't think of a single movie lately worth watching. If the sequal had been playing in the next theater, I would have gladly went in! Can't wait for this story to unfold! Great job, Kostner! Finally someone who knows how to tell a story again!
We need more movies in theaters that are made for adults, and I hope this can make some money. People bit@@ about remakes, sequels, reboots, superhero movies and so on but many of these same people also go watch these movies in theaters. Here's your chance, support something different instead of supporting some big CGI movie made for kids.

I wholly agree with your sentiment, on all levels, and I did see Horizon at least partly, if not mostly, on that basis... but, even so, it's a pretty disappointing experience in the theater. Costner's nerve, ambition and influences, however laudable, simply don't make this movie more than it is. Part 2 needs to be a lot better to save this franchise. I'm a fan of both Costner and Westerns, but that's just my honest take on it. That said, audience tastes in the age of the MCU and streaming are no determining factor of quality either; you could make The Godfather today and it would tank while the buzz builds for the upcoming Deadpool/Wolverine nonsense.

This was a movie I was very much looking forward to this year and I really loved this movie! I had a fantastic time. I really love the 1800s era and am a huge fan of western movies and when I first saw the trailer for this movie, I was amazed. And I play so much of Red Dead Redemption 2.
The cinematography, the action, the set pieces, the music, the characters, etc. just all had my jaw dropping. I sat through the credits while Amazing Grace was playing and just took it all in. These are the kinds of movies I want to see.
Also, it would’ve been awesome to see this movie in IMAX if the movie was shot in IMAX. I can’t wait to see this movie again before seeing Part 2 and I’m so ready for more chapters in this franchise! Kevin Costner delivered!

Just watched this movie and liked it. A lot. Old fashion western that doesn’t portray every cavalry soldier as a depraved scalp hunting maniac. Photography and desert scenery alone worth the 3+ hr seating. Good story line, great acting and accurate period settings. Very realistic. No CGI or other special effects. A classic. Cant wait for part two.

I saw this movie last night and could have watched another hour of it . I was drawn deeply into each character… very realistic for that time Costner did his homework on this historical period … part 2 is definitely on the radar … 4 1/2 out of 5 ! 2 looks even better!
Honestly, saw it yesterday and this movie was great enough to get me into a theater for the first times in ages, and am EAGER to Chapter 2. Deep stories within a larger theme, living characters with great acting and holy moly the scenery. America never looked to real or so good. See this one of the big screen.
Does part one feel complete though? or does it feel like they left you hanging and didn't finish they story?

I saw the movie over the weekend I thought it was excellent can't wait for the second installment in August it's an excellent story with lots of ups and downs actually one of the best movies of 2024 in my book Kevin Costner is great actor and it was a good cast I would have liked to seen Robert Duvall in the movie one could hope it's definitely worth the money to see it
Love this movie!!!! It’s crazy how refreshing it is to see a CLASSIC WESTERN in the theaters in 2024!!! No stupid superheroes, no remakes, no reboots, no stupid cliche’s, or all the gimmicks that just makes movies total shit nowadays.
This movie IS NOT for your “average movie goer.” This is a Western MADE for people who love Westerns, or just great cinema overall. Kevin Costner didn’t hold back and I love that he didn’t care one bit of adhering to 2024 “identity politics” didn’t care about being “PC” in anyway. No this movie is RAW, VIOLENT and most importantly, HISTORICALLY ACCURATE!!!

I personally can't wait! Being old enough to have grown up watching the old John Ford Westerns regularly with my Dad, I appreciate what was good about those films & many more of that era. I still watch them from time to time. I love what comes to the screen thru Costner's mind's eye. I hope this series is successful!
It’s really good, a easy 8 out of 10
It’s obvious flaw is it’s the first of a 3 or 4 parter but it’s a very good film that’s more of a ensemble than a pure Costner vehicle and everyone plays their part so well in it.
Beautiful score and landscapes. The visuals and the music are what stand out so clearly in this film but there are a fair few tense action sequences that rivet you to the screen.
I can only commend Costner and his crew for giving it a hell of a swing and I hope it finds enough success to finish his Saga

@@gregpolutanovich1774 Unfortunately for movies like this Chapter 1 has to grab you by the throat. It's the most important part of any epic. If chapter 1 is terrible and this one is. Nobody will want to see chapter 2 or 3 or 4. And while after all 4 chapters are complete maybe it will be a masterpiece but by then the producers will have gone bankrupt. $130M movie at cost has to make at least $280m. And this one will never hit that guarantee.
@@gregpolutanovich1774 Unfortunately that's not how things work. Chapter 1 has to grab you by the throat and make them want to see chapter 2,3 and 4 and this one does not even come close. It's a chaotic mess. This $130m cost has to hit $280M to be profitable and I guarantee it will fail miserably. I know I probably will just wait till the rest of it comes out on Netflix now.
I’m a Kevin Costner fan and love westerns however I did find it disjointed. I liked it but I’m sorry it felt like something was missing or storylines just didn’t work together.
Chapter 1 was the set up for Chapter 2. I loved it an waiting to see Chapter 2

Some of the back and fourths were pointless. For example, at one point the movie cuts to a couple sitting in a caravan at night while its raining and they are listening to the sound of thunder, then it cuts to different part of the story again. It does not progress the story in any way, it does not have any character development. pointless.

Rest assured, I do trust that Mr. Costner will continually increase the brightness within the mind’s eye and the warmth of the hope in hearts of the audiences as he brings about a stunning conclusion in an epic example of the historical Western vision.
As for Chapter I? Being blinded by the brilliance of genius can negate the opportunity to be blessed by it. Do not miss the chance offered with Horizon.

This review is 100% spot on. This is EXACTLY as I felt after seeing Part 1. I felt a serious nod to the classic epic western film making Of Ford over others and I was also struck by how bright the film is. It is a massive story that cannot be contained even in one 3 hour movie and I was sad to reach the ending but gratified to know Part 2 is just a round the corner and not a year away. I thoroughly enjoyed it even if it is a slow build. It was gorgeous and thoughtful. Highly recommended.

Saw it tonight and man was it fantastic..the one fault I'd say are the little flaws in costumes and sets. Like a Brand new shiny tin coffee pot in a camp in the middle of the western frontier. Someone should have dented it and blackened it, and made it look well used also
Too many natives wearing European clothes. Just little things but the story plot, characters, action were all fantastic. He tied 3 story lines of a settlement, a wagon train and a wanderer all in together in the search for land and leaving an old europe they couldn't change..t

The coffee pot is fair but I buy the Apache clothing choice. They had guns so they had contact with outsiders to trade for other things, as well.
@ForlornFreddy certainly in late 1800s but I didn't think most would in 1859 but I'm no expert. I'm not picky. It was a great film. Love to see the other parts. Grateful for a western.
Thanks for the shoutout to John Ford's Cavalry Trilogy. Kevin Costner really does have an appreciation for classic Westerns, and it shows in Horizon just from the trailer alone. Looking forward to the whole quadrilogy.

We just left the theater here in Montana. We absolutely LOVED THIS MOVIE! The acting, cinematography, music, animals, horses, cows, children, romance, men, Indians, women, clothing, scenes, everything about this movie was beyond words. I would have sat through it again in a heartbeat. Kevin Costner did it again. This movie will be in our home, right along side Dances with Wolves, Legends of the Fall, Horse Whisperer, A River Runs Through It, All of Client Eastwoods movies, Jeremiah Johnson, I cried my eyes out! I cannot wait to see the remaining three movies. LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!

Costner rejected Hollywood aesthetics and their hand-wringing politics, yes, but DEI was present. The term "Indian" was never used in the movie, instead it was "indigenous" people, always and by everyone. That is a Modern Awareness insert. As I recall, the designation of Indian was never used as an insult, rather it was a carry-over from the mistaken idea that Columbus had thought he had 'discovered' India. So, the term became, simply, the (wrong) label that EVERYBODY used. In the movie, when even the cowboys and soldiers who were FIGHTING the natives used 'indigenous', it was subtle but obvious. C'mon, does anyone think that word was known by, let alone in use EVER by any of these mostly uneducated whites? Pleeeze.
Saw it. Excellent review, but I'd give it a 9 out of 10. A 3-hour long movie that doesn't seem like 3 -hours long is an accomplishment to itself.

I loved this movie so much! I am looking forward to the next installment. I don't understand why some people are having difficulty following the various storylines. They are all clearly defined and interesting. I guess in this day and age, perhaps peoples attention spans have winnowed away to that of a gnat. Anyway, big huge thumbs up. A good old fashioned, classic feeling Western.

I really enjoyed the movie and I think it was a great success. It felt very authentic, and I hope Hollywood pays attention to that. This is the kind of movie that can bring people back to the theaters. None of that digital cinema, it's all about genuine storytelling.

Looks like an epic revenge movie targeting Taylor Sheridan; showing him how it's done. Fleeing Yellowstone to create this master vision of the White man wagoning west through the brutal elements, this seems like mandatory theater viewing to me. Love that part two is only a month away. No one has ever done a 2nd movie release in so short of a time frame. Huge props on that move!!! I'm all in!!!

I dont watch the comic book characters...avatars...stupid reality shows..mediocre comedy..ill watch reruns of Wagon Train before ill watch any of that. Im ready for tomorrow so i can go watch it. Kevin Costner knows how to make a good western. He’s no stranger to that. He’s worked with Lawrence kasdan on that genre with Silverado and Wyatt Earp. And he’s directed westerns like dances with wolves and open range. And appeared in western tv shows like Yellowstone and hatfields and mccoys. This was a long time coming.
Lawrence Kasdan isn’t involved in this movie. But his brother Mark is.
I know that. I’m just saying that Costner is good at westerns.
He’s also made some bad westerns too

Oh, watch out - there's a semi-long nudity scene at like the mid point. When the upper class lady starts sneakily taking water from a barrel at night and begins to wash her face that may be good time to get a refill lol. Might get uncomfortable watching it with your parent (And maybe not, I guess I don't know your relationship, just want to give a heads up!)

It''s all linked aoround Horizon and this Frontier they're all investing theur ives in fir different reasons. A clever and nuanced movie. No good or bad guys, just people struggling with the pace of History !

People understood Lord of the Rings was a Trilogy, Horizon is the same type of movie. It’s awesome, don’t expect a the usual beginning, middle and end. This is just the beginning.
I was so bored from first Lord of the Rings, I never bothered with 2 and 3.

I've always loved westerns. I grew up watching John Wayne, Clint Eastwood's "Spaghetti Westerns & his later ones too, with my Dad. My Dad bought a VCR when they first came out (they costed $400+) back then. Bc he wanted to watch Pale Rider when it came out on VHS, but he passed away a few months before it came out. So I made sure I got it & watched by myself, but I knew my Dad's Spirit was there watching it with me. I used to take my Son's & Daughters to the movies every pay day & a special Dad & whichever had a Bday, just us movie. But since they've grown up & started their own traditions with their kids(which makes me happy to see) I haven't been for a while. But I will be going to see each part of this Western Saga & buy it too if it's good enough to be rewatchable.

I can tell you that this is an epic western that left me inspired, moved, excited and teary-eyed a number of times. As a hardcore fan of this genre, trust me when I say this first chapter of “Horizon” delivers and I am very much looking forward to the next film. See it!
Hell of a cast and looks pretty but ultimately bit off more than it could chew. If the first 2 bomb we may never see the concluding parts next year. Maybe it will find an audience on streaming

Saw this movie yesterday. I can’t wait to see part 2. Part 1 was wonderful. It was not well attended but most of the 30 or so people applauded at the end of the movie. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard people applaud for a movie. This is a good movie to see on the big screen as it is beautifully films and very outhentic.

No matter what people say about Kevin Costner, he is an artist who makes movies he is passionate about. Its not just about making money but a lot more to do with story telling . He has taken many risks over the decades making these kind of movies. I plan to watch this and the follow ups regardless of box office performance.
I wish we had more actors/director's like him who are willing to take the risk and make such movies.
I just saw it yesterday, first showing and I was late (dammit) thinking there would be previews of obnoxious upcoming attractions. My wife said to me doesn't make sense. I admit there were a wee bit too many speaking parts but I held on. I'll be there for part II in a few weeks.

I saw it and it was absolutely amazing. Beautiful scenery. Loved the musical score. Tearjerking for sure. The sets and locations and costumes. The acting was good, more the dramatic sequences were edge of the seat at times. Lots of story at times, but some movies you have to want to pay attention. You have to earn it's time. And when it was over, even though I was on their long journey, I was surprised it ended then. I wanted to see more. !!! I will definitely be there for part two and beyond. Costner's intro riding the horse was great !!!

It feels a bit like Furiosa, you're on for a wide range of mythlogies all revolving around the theme of This Frontier, of this Horizon, where each character perceive it with its own tensions and turmoils, the beginning of the end/fight for the indians, the cursed and obligatory place for the army, the land of god and opportunities for settlers, and a free land to perpetuate horrors for the misconducted .. Brillant & Beautiful..
Feels like a documentary on the Far West, and the PRODUCTION DESIGN my god, the same pleasure i got to watch LOTR and look at all the details that made that world alive, feels the same here. Everyone is living, working, struggling, trying to survive this wild west the best they can hope .
Love you Costner, I missed Westerne movies so much. Thank you !
First time going cinema in years really enjoyed it the 3 hours flew by can't wait for part 2
You can tell from the first few seconds its gonna be good! he takes his time setting it up and makes us wait for "the hook", which happens seconds after he fires his gun. Now you know how this is going to play out, he sets it up marvelously. The younger inpatient crowd will not like waiting for character development and story backline development. But true movie enthusiasts will enjoy and savor the unfolding of the story. Awesome!!!
I enjoyed the movie but felt it was a bit long due to some pacing issues. The score and cinematography are the standouts here. Unfortunately, it didn't fare well opening weekend which puts further installments in jeopardy. I hope people give this a chance and see it. We need more adult films that makes you think and follow along. Looking forward to Part 2
Wife and I saw it today. It was fantastic. Beautifully shot. Great acting and stories.

@@linker27 It's part 1 of 3. The montage at the end are things to come. The stories may tie together or not. I found them all interesting on their own.

I pretty much agree everything that you’ve said about the movie. I think the true MVP of the picture is the Film Editor. For those who are deceived by Horizon: Chapter 1’s runtime, you might be surprised how well paced it is. Believe me, Horizon: Chapter 1 moves pretty quickly.
Although it got bad reviews, I really enjoyed this movie and will give it 4 out of 5 stars. Not a whole lot of action but I loved the story of the old west.
Looking forward to seeing this movie, it has been hard to find something to get excited about this year when it comes to hollywwod
This was an amazing film and I hope the rest gets made. Amazing cast, scenery, dialog, sets, and the story is enthralling

First time in a movie theater in at least ten years. Not disappointed! This is going to be great! Can’t wait for chapter two to release.

Thank you for your review. Great movie, really beautiful and your heart tears, I love the epic filmography, great acting, not classic, Kevin is a storyteller par excellence. For young people it is also the new or revaluation of the love for the language. Finally a different way of filming, which was a thousand times the truth, in an honest way. Beautiful cinematic manners since... ? After Horizon four, we will watch Horizon the American Saga for a weekend at least once a year!
I really like Horizon. Not prefect but I love that is ORIGINAL and COMPLEX!
Just saw the film a few hours ago and I can’t stop thinking about it! Keep in mind this film is just Part I, a setup for things to come. Great characters! The cast is outstanding, BTW.
Be mindful of anyone giving this a bad review and that they're not doing it because this movie isn't woke and iis historically accurate.
There's plenty of action in this movie. Even when there isn't you can feel the suspense of the dangers that life on the frontier posed at all times.

I watch it yesterday and I like it but that's sad because at the beginning we where only 5 people watching it .Mom, nephew,me and a couple.At the beginning at the theater we saw it they where having problems showing but they ended up showing it a little bit later Not only that my nephew suffers of allergies so Mom had to get out and bring him home.While,I stood watching it by myself with the remaining couple there By the way we watch it in the city of commerce.I give it a 10 out 10 good movie can't wait for the part 2 and the others after that.I recommended.
Saw it last night. This review is 100% spot on. Entertaining but disappointing because I was left wanting more. Guess that's the point. Movies today play down to the audience by using character dialog to explain the plot. This movie uses scenes not dialog to accomplish this purpose. Gives the viewer a broader interpretation of the characters and their motivations to move to the frontier
