No...you nailed the meaning. Anti-Vietnam song. The draft was still on at that time and a lot of guys were getting drafted to go fight an unpopular war...but the sons of millionaires and politicians always seemed to avoid the draft.

This song came out the same year my older brother went to Vietnam. Brings back very poignant memories when I hear it. His enlisting, horror stories of boot camp, his visit home before he shipped out, how handsome he looked in his uniform, how scared I was that I would never see him again. It's a bittersweet song for me.

The fortunate son referred to people in Washington who didn't let their kids be sent to the war, while others had to go. Its a GREAT song.

  • @vernacohen6988

John used to get so moved hearing from the Vietnam vets that they had this song blasting all the time at camp. That really touched him. Correct me if I'm wrong, guys. I think that John actually played all the instruments on the tracks and the guys had to just play live. That comes from John's autobiography which is great. John is still playing to a packed house in Las Vegas, he only does a handful of shows there a year. He still sings great, guitar playing awesome and runs around that stage like a young man - HIGH ENERGY. His drummer is killer now as well. You should just check out something from John Fogerty live and you'll see what I mean.

I first heard these in the British Army during my 2nd time serving. In 92 I was 20 on an Army Landing Craft attached to 3rd Commando Brigade RM. We were on exercise. We had just watched Hamburger Hill and then Apocalypse Now. My skipper had all the Creedance Clearwater Revival albums. So we played all their tunes. I served during the first Gulf in 90/91 but not in the war zone as half regt in UK other half in Saudi. Our turn to relieve our mates, Sadaam surrendered. The 60s era songs especially Vietnam era tunes, are much loved by the military. No one hates war more than a warrior. Those anti war tunes rely hit home. But if I never wore my uniform with pride, someone else would've had to. I served 3 different times in the British Army.
1st time: at 16 yrs old in Jnr Ldrs Royal Artillery 28th June 88, but had last school exam 28th, so joined a day later. Unfortunately I ruptured my Achilles tendon in Oct 88 so either backsquad or rejoin at 17.5yrs.
2nd time: I reapplied in June 89. Took the Oath again I. Dec 89 after retests etc. I rejoined 3rd Jan 90. Two weeks before my 18th birthday. I passed out best recruit, and first ever guard duty was an IRA bus bomb threat aimed for the bus stop 20 metres from my position on the gate. My Achilles tendon played up a few times, so by time I had fully qualified as an Army Maritime Seaman on Army Landing Craft, Mexeflote Rafts, Tugs, LCVPS, small fast patrol boats and Ribs etc. The very day I arrived at my parent unit around Oct/Nov. We were placed on a war footing for Op Granby (First Gulf). As mentioned above. My half of Regt didn't go as Sadaam surrendered on our turn. Did all the Gulf War syndrome jabs in UK. So got a 50page booklet to fillout about my health. Still think I'm not right.
3rd time: I split with ex in Nov 01 just after 911. I knew War was coming, so trained hard to join British Army Special Forces. I broke my back doing a charity parachute jump on a weekend off from SAS Signals pre Selection in March 03 (2 days before 2nd Gulf War). I went on Selection course in June 03, with a broken back I didnt know I had. Battling a 28 Yr ongoing multiple degenerative health nightmare. As think spinal injury first happened just after I left the regular Army in 1993 after 3 great years on RCT Maritime vessels. Think the flat bottom landing craft probably caused the issues to start. I lost everything in 06. Declared homeless bankrupt the lot due to nhs gp not helping me get mri scan. I finally got a diagnosis after losing everything in 2010. 5 spinal ops later. Op 4 and op 5 nearly killed me. Op 5 a delayed super bug jumped into my blood stream whilst recovering for 3 months at my patents. I had a case to sue the nhs. But same crappy gp, saved my life in front of my parents, so wasn't suing anyone after that. I'm struggling financially but my honour worth more than money. I wrote a letter to the SAS Signals Sqn Officer Commanding in 2015. To say sorry for wasting their time in 03. Attached my then 22yrs journey to the letter. I got an amazing reply.
He couldn't believe I got as far as I did on one of (if not the) the toughest Selection course in the world for Special froces. Especially with a broken back. He said I would've been ideal for his unit.
Sorry for very long post. But the 18months I trained to join the SAS Signals Course, I wouldn't have made it without my old Sony Walkman and great Hip Hop. REGGAE, RnB, Rock and 60s legendary tunes for motivation. I think why music is so important. It reminds us of the good and bad times. Can motivate, can comfort, can stir every emotion. Music is life, life is music. X

Dont forget about the draft lottery. My ex drew #3 so he joined the Air Force and ended up being sent to Thailand instead of 'Nam.

"Run Through the Jungle" is another anti war song.
I can't remember if you did "Ramble Tamble" yet, but it's great.

Love CCR and this song. My favorite song that describe the horror/insanity war from a soldier's perspective is "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" by Liam Clancy (cover).

saw him at the Bell Center a few years ago - he's still rocking with his son by his side - he talked about his concert at Woodstock, last one onstage - after The Grateful Dead - only one standing fan with a lighter going, he performed for that one fan! LOL he thanked them for putting him on last after The Grateful Dead! LOL

If you notice in the picture he's holding a washboard. Musicians, especially certain genres or areas use it as an instrument. Can't go wrong with any CCR song 🙌

    John fogarty ( fog-are-tee )
Fun fact he wrote every song himself.
The band took him to court after they split saying songs sound too fimiliar to his solo work.
He took a guutar to court.
Played dongs back to back lmao.
    Won the case.
Won the rights to all past works too.

I have heard this song quite a few times but to be honest, although I love CCR, I do not recall this song by its name. I always thought it was called It Aint Me. It's a great tune! I must have been busy listening to a Yankees game on my transistor radio when this first came out.

I'm 75 and this song brings back all the sad memories of friends that never came home because of a so called Domino theory that in the end was just a theory. Every soul lost died for nothing as it turned out and no one in our Nation believed what our leaders told us after that.
