We always played one initiative for the whole party back in the day with AD&D. We just used one d6.
We rolled for surprise where needed, and any modifier was added from the character at the front of marching order. We kept it simple. Still do. :)

I work with the RPGs Anonymous podcast and we are talking about doing AD&D as one of our RPGs for our live play. I have been selected to DM and I am looking forward to using a lot of your videos to help my players. Only one of them has played 1e and it has been 20 years for both him and I.

Hope the videos help! Be warned, I use a LOT of house rules that drive hardcore RAW types insane. In essence AD&D is a superb, albeit dated, foundation for any RPG with an amazing history and backdrop in World of Greyhawk. The same gores for Classic Traveller. The secret to fun is making minor changes so the game clips along empowering players to escape and have unique adventures - memories that last a lifetime.

It's interesting, you've turned it into a board game. I'd keep the group initiative the entire time. I'd grant line of sight for spells and use partial concealment for missile attacks w/chance to hit anyone in the line of fire. In a mostly empty tavern you should be able to at least count everyone's head. Oh and I do go clockwise around the table.

Why is there no surprise roll when the assassin attacks the cleric? She should detect him 1/6 (a roll of 6 on d6), I would think. 5/6 time she is surprised and I would let him back attack.

I don't like the RAW surprise system.
Primarily due to multiple attacks PER SEGMENT.
I use a 6 sec melee round (not 1 minute)
"Because the party surprised is (relatively) inactive, the surprising party will be
able to attempt telling blows during each segment of surprise as if the segment
were an entire round! That is, a fighter able to attack twice during a normal
round of combat will be able to do so twice during each surprise segment, so
dice are rolled for hit determination accordingly. Even if distance prevents
striking with weapons, the discharge of arrows, bolts or hand-hurled weapons is
permissible at three times the normal rate providing the weapon/missiles are
ready, otherwise at normal rates for rounds. Once surprise segments are over,
melee proceeds normally on a round-by-round basis" (DMG 62).

What's that matt set up? Is that a peice of glass / perspex and is the grid on it of the map.

      Hey there JP.
I use a 18" x 24" piece of dry erase marker board glued to 1/2" thick black Foam Core. I draw a 1 " grid with permanent marker (Sharpie) black on top of that.
I use these because they are sturdy and cheap! $7.99
      www.hobbylobby.com/Crafts-Hobbies/Kids-Crafts-Activities/Classroom-Supplies/White-Dry-Erase-Board---18%22-x-24%22/p/25576
On top of that grid line board, I tape down my loose maps.
On top of that is a piece of 18" x 24" Plexiglass with clear cabinet stops. The cabinet stops let air get through so I can lift it easily without tearing the map below.
Break out Dry Erase markers and go crazy. Good for tactical combat.

@@Classic_DMnice. I'll have to give it a go. I've tried lots of methods since I wasn't happy with the classic vinyl matt. Seems like it's pretty good for anything you don't want to build out in 3d. Bonus super easy to make notes and draw spells on the perspex.

@@Hepabytes Here's another thing too. There are tons if super cheap Pathfinder mini maps packs. Tape them down beneath in any arrangement as they have their own grid, then toss plexi on top. I'm hoping to upgrade my table so I can do a bette camera set up and larger play space.
