- While the jury deliberated the charges in the Karen Read murder trial Wednesday, court returned to session for defense attorney Alan Jackson to argue that the verdict slips given to the jury weren't fair to read. The three-minute argument was testy, and ended with Judge Beverly Cannone saying, "This is funny Ms. Read? Alright, we're done."
This judge needs to be reprimanded! She is not only argumentative but she shows clear contempt for the defense!

He is hardly an impassioned public speaker. Yes, no laughing aloud. The man is dead. The young people and family are greatly affected. She is guilty of something regarding his death. It is like a hit and run.
Because the defense is trying to change the verdict form? The same one that everyone else gets?

As it stands, she did fix the form after what I believe was a raking over the coals in her office from higher up.

If you do a simple google search, what’s even more telling is how many Massachusetts State Troopers have ended up in prison due to misconduct. I know of 2 separate cases where people were sent to prison for years, one 22 years one 36 years, and have since been exonerated. Both were due to trooper misconduct. It still blows my mind that the Feds made it clear to this judge “Ms. Read should not stand trial” and she completely ignored them, even went as far to say “I don’t have to listen to the Feds”. At least her refusal to dismiss this case is allowing the bias and corruption to be in the spotlight.

Beyond àny resonate doubt, this court, this judge, has been and continues, to unethically influence the outcome of this mockery of a trial. It's outrageous. It is a violation of her sworn duty. It is criminal. And it happens every day in countless jurisdictions throughout this country. Justice? What a sham!

I've been in criminal defense for 20 years. I've never seen a verdict form without a "not guilty" option, even for a lesser included offense. Cannone's suggestion that this is how they do things in Massachusetts is one of the most asinine judicial statements I've ever heard. And that's saying something since, in the jurisdiction I work in, judges routinely show up to court drunk (I've even got a video of that on my TH-cam channel).
Verdict forms typically have the words "guilty" and "not guilty" underneath or next to the main offense and each lesser included offense (LIO). The jury is instructed that they must not choose anything for any LIO unless they've chosen “not guilty” for the main offense. A verdict form with only a "guilty" option is something you see in an episode of The Simpsons. Not in actual courtrooms.
Also, even if verdict forms with only a guilty option on LIOs is standard, it's still inappropriate for a judge to be combative about addition of a "not guilty" option at counsel's request. Cannone snapping at counsel in response to this reasonable request -- and worse, at the defendant herself -- proves the appearance of bias that the defense has been alleging from the outset of this case.
Ultimately, it's not just that Cannone is an imbecile. She's insecure, overcompensates for that insecurity with an ego, and is extremely stubborn. That is a dangerous combination in any profession. Certainly, someone who is like this has no business adjudicating criminal cases.

No, in MA it's presumed the Defendant is Not Guilty, so there's no need to check such a box. It's already presumed. They only have to mark Guilty, if they believe she's Guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The top experts in the country and around the world, ARCA not only testified to that fact, they proved it. It is impossible for a 7,000 lb SUV or any car or truck to hit a person and kot leave broken bones, fractures, torn ligaments and bruising. There was no damage what so ever to his body below the neck. It is a horrible day for the United States when corruption like this set up a convenient patsy to cover that murder. I can see why Jackson stood up to complain and why Yannetti did not in the beginning. Yannetti has to stay in practice, Jackson will leave. However, Yannetti stood with him shoulder to shoulder for their client.

Unfortunately, in Massachusetts judges are appointed for life. They have no Superior to answer to; it is so wrong!! Judges are supposed to have a calm temperament . This lady has obviously been in the position for way too long and should have retired a while back, unless her disposition and temperament has always been like this! If so, yet another reason judges should be ELECTED, not appointed.
I think this judge did have a calm temperament.she didn’t raise her voice and explained the form to the defense attorney who seems to be grasping at straws for his client. As shocking as it may seem, judges are human beings too, and as such, they get tired! I don’t know how perfect you are, ( we all know Canton Karen is perfect and never gets tired, that’s why she laughed in mockery at the judge) but most of us mere mortals don’t function very well when we’re tired. Her excuse that she was tired and did not want to deal with it doesn’t really have any place in a trial setting as the JUDGE on that trial when this is an urgent matter. I just looked up same jury verdict forms and several states are like this, but some are worded differently. One example was Florida C Zimmerman and you can either check the box or not on three parts
1. We find GZ guilty of 2nd degree murder as charged
2. We find GZ guilty of manslaughter, a lesser charged offense
3. We find GZ not guilty
Several have and they are outraged as well!

Common sense dictates there should be a Not Guilty Option for the lesser charges. This does seem a manipulation of the jury to insure some sort of face saving guilty verdict for the Commonwealth.

I saw screenshots where first checkbox isn't just not guilty but not guilty on the offense or any lesser offenses.
The channel "legal bytes" or "legal bytes media" (sorry not sure which is correct) posted the jury form on her community post tab if anyone wants to see it.
Some lawyers say this isn't a huge issue because jurors can ask questions to the judge.

Why just don’t check the box if you think she’s not guilty. It’s not rocket science. Under that logic then landlords should put two lines on the contract. Line one you agree to the terms line two you don’t agree to the terms. Instead of if you agree sign on the line. If you don’t agree simply don’t sign it.

You don't have to like her or how she smiles or smirks or how she dresses but the facts of the case show that John Okeffe was beaten in the house and dumped on the lawn there's no way he was hit by a SUV and proctor busted up the taillight and placed it on the lawn.. the fix was in from the beginning.. she's innocent plain and simple..
Why should any person humble themselves when the person in power is clearly not able to see even the most plain and sensible facts? Just because something has, "Always been this way" does not mean it should continue. Child labour used to be common place... why didn't we just let that continue? Women were not accepted as doctors, engineers, and judges just a century ago, why didn't we just let it stay that way? When a simple error is pointed out (assuming it's an error with no malicious intent) it is an opportunity to correct that error, especially one so simple to correct. Unless it's not an error and the judge is actually leading the jurors to choose the only option available to them on the verdict slip for the lesser charges. At times, when something becomes so ridiculous we react to it as farcical in nature and we laugh or smile out of how truly unbelieveable the situation is. This whole trial has been a farce and even with her life hanging in the balance KR can still find the humour in that. Bev doubles down by saying, "That's the way it is"... hey the 70's called, they want their cliche back! It's 2024 and even a judge has to earn respect in a courtroom and unless you've been under a rock, you can see the over-whelming sentiment is with Karen Read, for good reason.

The judge is biased, just like the "justice system" in Massachusetts. Being a woman, she does not like the defendant (like my wife), and wants her to be found guilty. She jumped all over KR for grinning when one of her lawyers said something funny. He wasn't trying to crack a joke, but one can totally understand how his comment would illicit a smile or a chuckle. Not disrespecting the court, the family of the deceased, or the prosecution. It's called human nature. The judge has been waiting for a chance to tear into Ms. Read. Today she got in a good jab.
The judge interprets objections with her glorious ability to read minds. And the option available for due process is guilty or nothing. Awesome.
