♻️ The plastic crisis gets a lot of attention as pollution, but the environmental impact of plastic’s life cycle starts long before it ends up in our waterways and ecosystems. Watch our latest animation, The Story of Plastic: th-cam.com/video/iO3SA4YyEYU/w-d-xo.html

Love that this video asks "what kind of change-maker are you?" But many people don't consider themselves change-makers at all. Maybe the question should be 'what would it take to make you a change-maker?'

The things are a little bit more complicated than this! 1st. is necessary for each and everyone of us to realize and understand all these three components that you are pointing out necessary for the change. 2nd. in order the "1st" to happen, each and everyone of us has to make an effort to learn and know ourselves. Without the "Know Thyself" nothing is going to happen. Knowing yourself is knowing the big, deep psychological process that is happening inside of us and shaping us as individuals. Of course, this shaping starts from the moment we are born and influenced by environment(family, community, school, etc.). To make the first steps toward knowing yourself, one should abandon all the institutional values that are imposed on us, next: to start observing him/her self and take note how they react (instead of only, maybe just respond) or are affected by situations, relationships with other people, next: all the previously mentioned staff can be done through a very thoroughly done internal, psychological inventory. All this of course is a great challenge and enormous task.
This system is obsolete because it is unsustainable, it is degrading for the individual and the planet as a whole.
    Knowing Himself.

The first step is a real and thorough education, discussion and debate on the hard realities of this world. Not the dog-and-pony shows we get from the mainstream media. People can't take action unless they truly know that they are ready to act. When you ask for action of a person whose education is stunted, you're going to have people who go out and lose sight of what they had set out to do in the first place. More education is needed. We're not ready for this adversary quite yet.

Well Done! I want to participate in change by focusing on UNITY. I agree that WE can work together and take big action. We can not wait for those who prefer DISUNITY as they are clouded in their fear of change, prejudice or apathy. What makes those of us that want change is that we will gladly accept help from those fearful, negative people who eventually see the benefits. One of the things we've done at ISEC, and for which we advocate in our film The Economics of Happiness (.org), is to create a new economic system which supports--rather than destroys--diversity, livelihoods (jobs), cultures, ecosystems, and place-based knowledge, etc.
Governments the world over are supporting global business and banking. It's time to about face. Support your local economy and community and demand your leaders do the same.

The reason I was first attracted to a resource based economy is, it would improve everyones lives, the wealthy, the poor, and the middle class.
So in reality, there would be no reason to oppose it.
And when a few influential powerful people see the benefits to this system, and how the current system is unsustainable change will begin to take place. And when the mass media starts promoting the idea, the mentality of the people will change very quickly.

Annie the type of world you want to create is going to make a lot of people happy and I don't mean just the ones you demonize. And the world we live in now is the one in which you and those that agree with you are unhappy. The best you can hope to create is a world where everyone does exactly what you are in agreement with. That explains why you are interested in talking, but shy away from debating.

In a timebank if I help you get groceries in the house you can pay me back by helping someone fill out some job applications.
That person pays you back by helping someone else rake leaves. That person pays back by helping someone else again do something simple in THEIR life and in this way we build community and we may find that we have what we need if we use what we have.

from my perspective the biggest idea we have is called "Unconditional Basic Income" which is defined like that:
    * Every Human gets everything it needs to fully take part in Society
As we see on the world today and as has been proven in Science, every Human wants to contribute to Humanity. Thats a basic need for everybody. The hurdles we put in between the individuals motivation and the actual action are what is holding back Humanity's Potential.
    Think about it!

I am a very conscious consumer and I do write letters to companies and politicians. None of my letters have ever made a difference.I haven't seen a successful protest in my lifetime. The whole 99% protests, what did that change? The protests in Egypt? Now they have it worse than before. I can't change other people, I can only change myself. Most people laugh at me when I tell them that I write letters, and try to live an eco friendly life. I think she is undervaluing the effectiveness of "voting with your dollar" though.

Think about this... Citizens and their reactions are normally late indicators of things that have already happened. Let's face it--the majority are ill educated to understand what is happening as well as unable to act because they just don't have time. Those in charge have one mandate and that is to perform at whatever it is that their organizational goals are. For corporations, the goal is profit, which IS NOT A BAD THING. It is the how.

Although I'm not convinced that "we've got the big idea" is true, I mean there are big ideas out there that I support, like Direct Democracy, Unconditional Basic Income, having an economy focus on access rather than trade like what The Zeitgeist Movement promotes, or shortening the workweek, but I don't see that a big chunk of the population have embraced any of this yet, so to me there seems to be a big need for communication before we can get to some really important action.

Your 4 examples are paltry compared to the wide-scale changes required to curb climate change. Which is why it is likely going to take generations - as opposed to a passage of a few bills - before we have the laws we need to put human behavior in line with ecological requirements.
The biggest change will likely need to be generated within school systems. People act as they do because they have needs. Their needs are largely socially constructed and defined, yet the "culture" - the realm which determines our needs - is always there, from generation to generation, defining needs, setting brains on certain paths, and thus sustaining a feedback loop between one generation and the next.
What needs to be taught is not merely "sustainability", but the system like nature of all things - including us. If we begin with the natural world, and work forward, we can definitely imagine a school system which inculcates an understanding of ourselves as "emergent", dynamic autopoeietic ("self maintaining") systems, evolving on a planet which provides conditions for all sorts of like systems to evolve. For instance, it should be taught in later grades that the orientation that the mind takes follows from a "metaphorical conversion", whereby elements of ones physical appearance or experience (such as height) becomes "attitudes" towards others. This understanding would show how the mind is itself an elaboration of bodily processes, unconsciously converted when one encounters real life situations - which are usually social and with other human beings.
For people to stop doing what is "easiest" requires a moral education which is itself dependent on developing self-awareness. For many people, this boat has already sailed. Life-long habits die hard. This is why the most EFFECTIVE deterrent against this way of being is through the education system.

  • @georgecataloni4720
    @georgecataloni4720 11 ปีที่แล้ว

Fair enough. You are correct about why we don't use alternative energies, but not correct implying that I was wrong. Businesses cannot make money BECAUSE it takes more human capital to use cleaner sources. Nothing is free, it costs human capital; how much time and effort do you think people will spare if capitalism offers less? We need more innovation. I won't argue about our current predicament, though.

YES WE CAN CHANGE THE RULES WITH INDIVIDUAL ACT! IF WE ARE THE CONSUMERS WE CAN DECIDE AND AND NATURALLY THINGS WILL CHANGE BECAUSE OUR INTERESTS. THE HARD PART IS TO MAKE EVERYBODY HAVE THE INFORMATION AND ACTION FOR THIS CHANGE, AND WE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE, AND MOST PART DON'T BELIEVE THINGS CAN CHANGE IF EACH ONE BE REALLY THE CHANGE!
YOU CAN CHANGE THE RULES AND PEOPLE STILL UNHAPPY CAUSE THEY EVEN DON'T UNDERSTAND THE POINT!
WE NEED TO CHANGE THE CONCEPT OF POVERTY, WE NEED CHANGE HABITS, WE NEED CHANGE THE CONSUMERISM MODEL, WE NEED CHANGE MANY THINGS BEGINING IN OURSELVES!
BUT OUR WORSE CHALLENGE IS TO MAKE PEOPLE SEE THAT WE HAVE OTHER POSSIBILITIES! IS TO TAKE OUT THE FEAR!
AND THE MEDIA IS ONE OF THE KEYS! CAUSE PEOPLE ARE BEING BRAIN WASH AND TERRIFYING AND BECOMING STUPID AND LAZY!
HOW CHANGE THE RULES? THE GOVERNMENT AND THE CORPORATIONS ARE MADE BY PEOPLE! PEOPLE IS EVERYWHERE AS YOU SAID! EVEN ON GOVERNMENT AND CORPORATIONS!
WE HAVE TO CHANGE OUR WAY TO SEE LIFE! OUR WAY TO UNDERSTAND HAPPINESS! WE NEED TO CHANGE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT!
THAT WHAT WE CAN CHANGE FIRST TO CAN REALLY CHANGE THE RULES!
BECAUSE YOU CAN CHANGE THE RULES AND PEOPLE STILL BLIND.
    AND DOESNT STARTS ON VOTE!

People don't need "incentive" to work. It's human nature to create. Do you know how many people that work regular jobs are building things like magnetic engines/ engines that run on water? A painter is going to paint. A builder is going to build. We don't need to get PAID to do these things. Our system actually limits our growth because it doesn't invest in human capital. We have millions of engineers, inventors, artists, doctors, etc who are living on a dollar a day. Education is key.

There's more to Mohandas Gandhi than a smiley face. India's 'Swadeshi' (Hindi 'Self-sufficiency') was the foundation of 'Swaraj' (H. "Home-rule') which Gandhi adopted on the advice of community activists & elders when he returned from S. Africa in 1919. As a movement Gandhi 'demonstrated' & practiced daily spinning his own thread, living in multihome dwelling complexes (Ashram), growing food, making salt & more. The 'self-sufficiency' movement promoted each person to do what they could both individually & forming companies. Buying from each other, lay the economic foundation for mutual-aid in communities. As people developed self-reliance, using Indian traditions, then pride & camaraderie developed. At the same time with just a small 5% of India fully engaged, British (Canadian, New Zealand, Australia, US etc) companies with their long supply chains & dependence on exploitive conditions, started going bankrupt in significant numbers. By 1947 India achieved independence. Closer to home, 1st Nations here practiced all humanity's worldwide 'Great-good-way-of-kindness', through which all our ancestors originally intentionally 1) lived in Multihome-Dwelling-Complexes having both privacy & proximity for intergenerational female-male collaboration. 70% of humanity today lives in Multihome apartment, townhouse & village complexes but we aren't aware of how to systematically join together in mutual-aid. 2) Time-based human-resource accounting on the world-wide string-shell within Multihome dwellings & Production-Society/Guilds enabled recognition & progressive ownership for all contributions to domestic, industrial & commercial economies. 1st Nation 'indigenous' (Latin 'self-generating') 'economy' (Greek 'oikos' = 'home' + 'namein' = 'care-&-nurture') is the only sovereignty here. sites.google.com/site/indigenecommunity/relational-economy

Finland also can do this because they have a social democratic plan based on oil resources. Try to operate the same in a country that has significantly more landmass. Just the transportation alone across Canada or USA for food and resources use up a lot of resources. You're essentially saying any island nation that doesn't have oil resources are worthless. And then what happens with tourism? Is that a resource?

Lovins describes clearly how we can do these things starting with technology we have right now today. What we need are leaders with the political will to stand up to the corporate polluters who prefer business as usual. That's where we as citizens play the pivotal role. I ask myself "Am I part of the problem? or part of the solution?

Right. People are so loathe to pay even a few cents more for important essentials. It's always about the almighty dollar with the majority, rich or poor.

I suggest a resource based economy. Class is where evolving comes in.
I suggest that you do a little research on the education system they have in Finland. In Finland, there are no good and bad schools, they are all the same. No matter the economic status of the students. Finland is always at the top of all nations in education. Here in the US, economics and education is totally connected. Depending on where you live, determines the education you receive.

Yeah it's the paradox of government control of business. As long as government officials are democratically elected they will need financial support for their campaigns. If government officials are given a lot of regulatory power then there is a huge incentive for companies to "invest" in government officials by giving them financial support for their campaigns in exchange for political favors. In short, giving the government more regulatory power of business actually gives large companies power.

I didn't forget about self sustaining machines because without profits, not one will work to make these machines in the first place. No one will be driven to take necessary risk to innovate the machines. No one will make new machines as demand changes. All this is because of the tragedy of the commons. It's possible, if people worked together, but I try not to work with such assumtions...[continued]
