    Durst made excellent enlargers. I have an older one (M606), purchased used from a friend, and for the past 49 years, it has worked quite well, with few, if any, problems. As with many Dursts, mine will enlarge multiple formats, and is bullet-proof. Buy an M605 or better, if you ever have the chance; be sure to ask for and get all of the accessories that came with it (or which were later acquired), including the manual, extra condensers, extra light bulbs, all film holders, filters, lenses and lens holders, etc., and be clear that you want all of these items be included in the purchase price. Later on these items can be hard to find and expensive to buy.

    The adjustable slides aren't for composition , your easel will give a much better edge to your composition . The sliders are to limit the amount of flare from the bulb and the diffuser.

    Although I've used enlargers I've always stuck to the basics I've been taught and never had the courage to experiment (get your negative sharp and leave it alone). You have given me the confidence to play with the magic box. Pandora is in for a surprise!

    Hi Roger! I got me a real score some days ago!!! it took me 11 hours driving but that was well worth it....Got me a Durst 805 with color head for free!!! just had to go and get it, as she would not send it. I could not believe my luck and she even throw in a lot of papers of different sizes and trays for it too....and all for free!!!! just the cost of gasoline of course but that's it....Now i can print up to 6x9 neg's.
    I'm ecstatic to print now , just have some stuff to fix in my "darkroom" but that's soon done...Glad to say that your videos do inspire me a lot....thank's for them.

    Nice job of explaining the Durst. The swinging lens standard can also be used for straightening converging vertical lines so that architectural shots taken without a PC lens can be corrected. With fixed and adjustable negative stages on enlargers, a good idea is to obtain or make a grid acetate or negative so that when projected you can check edge to edge focus. On adjustable negative stages like the Simmon Omega enlargers have, you can adjust the stage. On enlargers like the Durst, DeVere, and Beselers, all you can do is stop down and pray to the darkroom gods if your corners are out of focus. Too bad you don't have a glass carrier with your Durst.

    Good choice of lenses.
    Schneider Componon are best.
    Schneider also makes the Componar line of cheaper enlarger lenses which are best avoided.
    Durst sell their supposedly own brand lenses.

    The Neotars not so good.

    One last thing about the Dursts. Granted they have a great reputation. However I've never been too fond of enlargers that have anything extended past the lens like the red filter on Dursts. When dodging or burning it can get in the way, and once you bump the enlarger, no matter how slightly, your print is ruined. Beselers have a similar problem with their extended focusing rack.

    Why is there a difference in hole size in the negative masks? One is slightly smaller than the other. The smaller one should be in the bottom and the other one in top of the negative holder. Is this to prevent light fall off on the edges of the frame perhaps?

    Can I just ask a question about your M605, as I'm thinking of getting one. Do you find the 150W bulb gives off too much heat? Also, I'm a bit confused about where to buy replacement lamps - they all seem to say different things. Are you able to throw any light (SORRY) on where you got yours? Thanks!

    • @ShootFilmLikeaBoss
      @ShootFilmLikeaBoss  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simon B Ha Ha nice pun. I use a 75w or a 100w bulb. Not 150w. They don't throw out much heat as they are not on long enough. Unless you're exposing for a long time. I usually leave my 100w on for a few minutes before projecting just to warm the negative up and help it settle into the carrier. So it lays perfectly flat. (Just habit)

A flick of a lever on the side and you’ve swapped between formats. I just have to remember to swap the lenses! Keep up the good work. Regards Dave

    I have the 305 which only enlarges the 35mm, I would love to go bigger but I have some physical constraints of my own. It’s relatively light and I don’t have a dedicated darkroom due to my wife and myself living in a ground floor flat as we both have disabilities. Hence, although I develop all my own films I scan colour and B&W 120. I noticed at 11.40 you have a bit of darkroom kit I don’t have, it was a green bottle with something that looked like "Stella Artois" written on it. Does this aid the images going out of focus? Only joking, great video and very informative and your presentation of all the details of how you do things was perfect. I’m green with envy for your darkroom and I loved the image.

    • @ShootFilmLikeaBoss
      @ShootFilmLikeaBoss  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Harris Sometimes I get Stella blur! To be honest I shoot more 35mm than 120mm. Nice light cameras and easier to manage printing. Do you wet print with your 305 or have you not the room? I started in a small bathroom with a smaller Durst BW375. But I reckon I could still print in the same bathroom with the 605. That's if my wife lets me!

    • @markharris5771
      @markharris5771 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shoot Film Like a Boss I do use it to wet print but as yet very amateurish, all my 120 stuff and colour I use a printer. I used to use it in the bathroom, but moving everything in there was off putting. So I’ve blacked the window off in the spare bedroom with wood and black velvet, I use it as an office etc with all my camera stuff in there. It’s much easier to take the water in there than move everything into the bathroom. 90% of my photography is B&W 35mm, my only MF camera is my Bronica ETRSi which is lightweight, gives me 15 images and I can change backs.

    Hi Im new into this - since come from former Czechoslovakia - there are plenty of Meoptas out there for peanuts I could get. But I wonder how about this little M605 - Im quite new into darkroom printing (I only developed negs and scanned them before) - which M605 has condensor and which has diffuser? And which one would you recommend for a newbie? I mostly read people preffer the diffuser but which one is it? The one with the color head?
    Is there any other good alternative? I preffer something that is reliable but doesnt take much space. I will only do 35mm and 6x6 nothing else

      the M605 colour has a diffuser head. You can print BW with a colour head and also the bonus of the integrated filters. Also diffuser heads are more forgiving on the contrast of the print and also any dust/hairs on the negative.

    I would like to ask you for your advice and experience recommendation with perhaps choosing another Durst model than yours. I only make 120 Kodak Portra 800 6x7 Medium Format and Color Only in 8x10 or 16x20 Portraiture prints with Kodak Endura or Fuji Crystal. Which Durst Models you recommend besides the M605 you have? What available Durst Options to choose in which Models to look for? Appreciate your insight and suggestions with finding the right used Durst Model for my application. Love your TH-cam Channel!!

      Hi Henrik. I don't shoot colour yet so I really wouldn't be the best person to ask about enlargers. Although when I do eventually shoot and print colour I'd want to get a colour head for my M605.

      @@ShootFilmLikeaBoss It's OK. May I ask you if you can get a 120 6x7 negative (56mm x 69.5mm Mamiya RZ67 Pro II) with the M605? It's listed as a 6x6 Durst Model just wondering about my 6x7 Medium Format only use if M605 negative holder can take or what to do instead?

    What an adorable video!I never thought that the enlarger could be used as common as large format camera.It even makes me wanna buy a durst M605 color head and M370 B&W.But I don't know if their head carriers and basis could be associated to each others.They just look so same.Can you help me to figure that out?Thanks a lot!

    Will the Sirioneg be compatible with the color head for M605? I recently got an agfa c66 (which I learned is just a durst M605 but sold by agfa) but the negative holder is missing pieces and it’s driving me nuts because the negatives won’t stay put. I was looking into getting the Sirioneg which you showed, but I don’t want to spend the money if it won’t fit on the color head that I have. I’ve been trying to find any information about this but have found none. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
