    Enjoyed that. I discovered the channel around April. I love it. Funny and informative. I've downloaded the SFLAB guide few weeks ago and joined the youtube community group tonight. Thought I might aswell since I've jumped in with two feet and bought an enlarger, paper, chemicals etc plus Praktica MTL50 off ebay this weekend.

    I once did a similar thing with 3 rolls of 120 film...exhausted film developer. That was a right pain until I figured that the developer had been made up 3 week earlier! I was also loving in a quite warm country in those days too. Live and learn..but quite irritating a the time. Best wishes..David in the UK

    I got a Beseler Analyzer with three custom setting modules . . . just sitting on a shelf looking pretty. I sold my Saunders 4500 and JOBO back in 2005 . . . I still have some fine film cameras, but my darkroom days are over.

    Wouldn’t it be nice if darkroom paper was free...or even a bit cheaper!! Glad you stuck with it though Roger. You won in the end. Reminded me of one of my own prints of a lightening struck tree. I had a similar challenge, needing to dodge the tree and some of the background, and burn in the sky and some of the foreground. I made a cardboard cut out of the tree trunk shape as it was too large an area on a big enlargement for a lollipop dodger as it would have been too unpredictable. My best effort was on a practice piece of two waste strips I had sellotaped together! My final effort has a bit of a halo in places at the sides of the tree but it’s not too bad. Will probably have another go at it sometime as it’s one of my favourite images.

      I know the deeper you delve the shallower your paper stack gets... It was a tricky neg. Good fun trying

    Well, I don't have a darkroom, and at the moment, I get my negatives developed at a lab. I still love watching though. Perhaps some day, I'll be able to have my own darkroom and do my own prints, rather than only watching other people do that. For now it's all scans and ink printning on my Canon A3+ printer.
    Anyway, very nice effort!
    I'll be looking forward to your next videos.

    I thought of a Wednesday wonder you might want to try. Does film developer affect grain in the final print? You could shoot a whole roll on one scene, split up the film in three developers and see if you can tell the difference in the prints. I have a feeling the developer might not matter too much in a darkroom print but you would be able to see the difference in negative scans. Just a thought, as always keep up the great work. Thanks for the content.

    10/10 for effort. The double jointed thumb just made me queezy though. Only question it left me with was could you use knackered developer heated up to get a contrasty print ..... maybe another vlog in that.

    • @ShootFilmLikeaBoss
      @ShootFilmLikeaBoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. I tried that ages ago with exhausted developer except for some weird reason I added 50ml of rodinal to it and it came back to life. Strange

    can you get or use graduated ND filters for darkroom work?

    • @ShootFilmLikeaBoss
      @ShootFilmLikeaBoss  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I imagine the only reason to use one would be to save dodging or burning sky/foregrounds in which case I can use my hand. Bit yeah I imagine it would do a similar job

    On the previous video, I asked whether a yellow filter on the camera might have helped that image. I’m going to suggest an experiment. Using panchromatic film, shoot a similar scene through, no filter, a UV removing filter such as 1A, a yellow, an orange and a red filter. Print all the negatives. Which, if any, filter results in the best print?

    • @ShootFilmLikeaBoss
      @ShootFilmLikeaBoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think a yellow would have brightened the rock definitely. And popped the sky a tad so possibly a better choice. I made a video doing just that about a year ago. I think with filters you need to be a regular filter user to know when they will work best. I use orange and red mostly for sky's that have cloud and blue. Hardly ever use yellow though. Yellow was a popular accessory back in the day. My braun paxette came with a yellow filter

    Hi, as a darkroom worker myself, I always use fresh developer for each session and sometimes within a session, if, as in your example, it is a long session. Your tray looked a bit dirty or sludgy, an indication of exhausted developer, and this will of course contaminate fresh developer. Sorry if I’m saying something you already know...

    • @ShootFilmLikeaBoss
      @ShootFilmLikeaBoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great tip! I've scrubbed my dev tray. Thats all ground in. Unless I bleach it

      @@ShootFilmLikeaBoss One other thing that occurred to me about the print, and I know exactly the problem with this kind of image, is that you could try using Kentmere, as you do use this paper. I find that Kentmere has a longer tonal range than Ilford, and is easier to print in difficult areas, so if you leave it in the developer, you may find that some tone will appear in the halo area, enough to disguise it and blend with the sky area. This doesn’t alter your split grading and timings. Kentmere paper was already regarded as a more artistic paper than Ilford. Otherwise you could preflash the paper with a soft grade for 1 second at F22 with the head at the top of the column before inserting the negative. But the you would have to do test strips again.

    • @ShootFilmLikeaBoss
      @ShootFilmLikeaBoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hm7576 yes Kentmere blacks are not as heavy. Thanks!

    I am just learning about pre flashing, would that have made any difference? Strong work!

    • @ShootFilmLikeaBoss
      @ShootFilmLikeaBoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would have lowered the contrast for all I know. I only preflash when I have highlights that are difficult to pull back. So I preflash the paper to bring a slight, very slight, off white tone to fill the highlights. It works well for some prints. Not sure this one, but I didn't try.
