You're right SpongeBob gets depressed, there is no way SpongeBob being depressed. These two are different.
He's full of life and energy.
He just feels his emotions really deeply.
But in general he's happy and optimistic character and I like that he gets frustrated with himself and sad or angry and jealous sometimes because that way he seems more humane.
Even happy and optimistic people can feel sadness in some periods in their lives.
Also i remember the episode "SpongeBob you're fired" where he actually feels really depressed.
If someone has to be depressed in SpongeBob is probably Squidward (for sure) and maybe Plankton.
Great job and video by the way.

Most of the depressed people don't like to be seem like that and try to hide it from the people, I do it myself, but he can be a depressed guy and you would never know, spongebob is probably just too strong to hold all this shit alone and still keep walking on

    The fact that:
    1) he sees a fast food place as the Pinnacle of culinary achievement (see his establishing pilot, Help Wanted)
    2) he has a habit of obsessing over something the instant he thinks of it
    3) his constantly being portrayed as optimistic in the face of failure outside of the pickles incident and...
    4) his regularly shown love pf jellyfish
All tell me he's more hyperfixated than depressed. He even caves to peer pressure on occasion when it comes to being cool, outside of the Pretty Patties incident (where he proves Krabs and Squidward wrong about the concept, but does gove ot over to Krabs a day before everyone finds out it dyes THEM too).
Given that he's still referred to as a kid in the first SpongeBob movie (and ends up owning it at the end), this doesn't seem too out of place to me. He's probably 18 or 19 at the oldest (physically speaking) when the series takes place.
Course, it's also possible he may just be on the extreme end of the autism spectrum, much like my older brother.

I believe SpongeBob at least in the movie (supposed ending of the series before Nick wanted more) Is about 31-35 years old. He's probably "college age" at the start of the series. Basically he's a adult with a child-like mind, either seeing the wonder and comfort in it, or it's just how he thinks... or really just both ways I feel. He could be on the spectrum.

  • @suspiciousstar7547

Whether or not this might be true, I totally understand on why he would be depressed. He works at a fast-food place where his boss sees him as cheap labor and his co-worker wants to avoid him all the time (sometimes it's justified though). He constantly gets mocked and humilated by the citizens in his town, who can be worse than Squidward imo. Heck, there's an episode where his OWN FRIENDS abandon him to celebrate a holiday about hating him so much.

I don't think a lot of people understand the ending of "Are you Happy now?"
The whole time Squidward wasn't feeling anything at all at the time. What SpongeBob did made him feel Anger and thus the Anger made Squidward Feel Alive in the process.

    • @AlkisenSuper
      @AlkisenSuper 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    • @Animeatgrinder
      @Animeatgrinder 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@AlkisenSuper I think the ending fits modern season squidward. Modern show squidward fills the void of wasted potential with a massive victim complex he can no longer stray because he gets the most attention and sympathy from not being ok. Which is why he doesn't want help from SpongeBob to get better in the end. The episode felt like a metaphor to the SpongeBob cycle the first time I watch it.

I kinda wish you mentioned the Whobob Whatpants episode.
I honestly hated that episode, because of how it starts. He starts out happy and cheerful, but then, out of nowhere, everybody turns on him for destroying things (not intentionally). Gary, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, even Sandy. They all called him Idiot Boy. (Squidward did too, but that wouldn't surprise anyone)
He took it to heart and it caused him to run away. I'm not sure if you can link that to depression or not.

This episode put me in SpongeBob's shoes. It made me feel like I was at home and spending time with my parents. They react in the same way as Sandy, Gary and Mr. Krabs in this episode. I don't think this episode is necessarily bad, but it is a representation of how toxic people take you to rock bottom and end up making you abandon your old life and start a new one. Sometimes starting a new life means ending the old one. If you know what i mean.

I can see this, especially after episodes like Gone, Whobob Whatpants, etc.

Same. Try to get help, and focus on self-care. I started using a self-care app recently because I just can't fix this mess on my own, but I can't afford therapy. It's not perfect by any measure, nor as much help as a therapist could be, but it's what I have, and it's certainly better than nothing. It reminds me that it's okay if all you can really do is survive the day, and has helped me to learn some methods to deal with it when my brain says everything sucks.

There have been times in my career when the expectations of certain career goals werent met and it put me in a very low place. not a new observation by any means something i noticed is that in most examples spongebob's behavior can easily be explained by autism. his difficulty with change, especially with his interests or routine, his naïveté and seeming lack of ability to "read the room", even OCD-like compulsions are fairly common within those on the spectrum.
i doubt he was written with neurodivergence in mind but as a young undiagnosed kiddo i found myself relating to him quite a bit, maybe even moreso now as i get older.
tbh most of the characters have very strong personalities and defined interests that could be attributed to neurodivergence; children's cartoons (even as great and well-written as spongebob) aren't usually known for their deep and complex characters. spongebob stands out to me as the most likely to be labelled canonically on the spectrum, and is the most realistic feeling representation of the show.
and patchy. patchy is definitely autistic.

I agree with you that SpongeBob gets depressed and isn’t depressed. But these examples do give off a good argument that he might have an anxiety disorder or something. I mean his reactions to driving is way overboard. He gets so scared and terrified of the pressure that he is unable to complete it each time. All the times he does do well, it’s when something is there to ease his fears. If he wasn’t so scared, he would’ve not only have a license, but maybe be one of the best drivers ever.
Pickles are also a great example of what pressure does to him. He makes one mistake and he obsesses over it so much that it completely disrupts his life. It’s only when those fears are controlled and he finds out Bubble Bass is lying does he feel ok.
Heck, he hurts his butt once, and instead of just being more careful, he once again completely disrupts his life and cuts himself off from the rest of the world. Letting his fear of getting hurt, completely change him.
SpongeBob gets fired or forced to take a break a few times in the show and each time his life crumbles. Feeling he is unable to do anything else. Almost like his worth is directing tied to him working at the Krusty Krab. A fear of change is definitely a common theme in those episodes.
Even the first episode establishes that he feels he isn’t worthy of working at The Krusty Krab. It’s only a small moment in the beginning, but it’s pretty consistent throughout the show that small mistakes make him feel unworthy of a job, or a toy, or whatever.
In a cartoon show, things aren’t always completely consistent as it’s episodic in this case. And I’m sure many can provide many counterpoints. So what do you guys think?

He is not depressed, but might have major depressive disorder since things seem to affect him very easily. Would also explain why he has manic highs, why he chases constant stimulation, and why after 10 seasons without Therapy except for an unrelated issue, he's become absorbed into his hyperactive state (and flanderized).

I would not be surprised at all to find out Spongebob is neurodivergent. As a person with adhd and possible ocd, I relate to most of his symptoms and it's surprising how much a simple kid's show not meant to be taken seriously or have long storylines can portray mental disorders and illness. I personally think he has adhd because of his hyperfixiations and cravings for stimulation.

He lives in bikini bottom and is a slave to the whole damn city, his best friends have left him in the past for his childish behavior he's constantly mocked by the fish folk, but when something is going wrong the fish turn to him if you ask me Spongebob shouldn't live in a pineapple he should have more respect he barely gets paid, people in society are just like him, we try so hard to be nice but we have enough and just want to have a assertive side, AGAIN when he did all his 'friends' including the smart one, told him to get rid of his abrasive side, just because HE WAS STICKING UP FOR HIMSELF

As someone who has depression (not gatekeeping it, and if anyone out there with depression has a different experience than mine, that's ok. I'm merely speaking from my own perspective) it's so hard to say because the show is episodic. But even with the examples shown I don't think he has it. He's just someone who expresses his emotions very strongly, whether they're sad or happy. Many of those moments I think even confident and/or mentally healthy people would feel distraught by (losing a pet, being humiliated by someone, teased etc.) I'd say his condition is more closely tied to autism than anything, a disorder that is commonly diagnosed alongside depression and ADHD (I have ASD but not ADHD)
Interesting video! I like that you didn't make your answer conclusive. It's important when the characters concerned are fictional.
EDIT: As many people have pointed out, Squidward is way more likely to suffer from major depressive disorder. He strongly exhibits all of the most common signs (feeling tired, outbursts of anger, agitation etc.), but just like real life, it's not all or nothing. There are periods when it manifests more and when it manifests less, which is why Squidward can be shown engaging in hobbies and interests. (This inconsistency is probably why we Millenials relate so hard to his ennui lol)

That point about SpongeBob's driving actually makes alot of sense to me. When I first learned how to drive, my father couldn't keep his composure and would freak out and scream whenever I would make a mistake. It made me drive significantly worse and more reckless due to the anxiety. I still get mild anxiety when I drive with him as a passenger.

  • @tehalfgroove4774
    @tehalfgroove4774 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    about SpongeBob's driving issues:
For a lot of trauma victims there's something called skill regression. It's literally losing the ability to perform basic skills. For some people it can be talking, but for others it could be driving.
When SpongeBob is doing the best at driving it's either when there's some sort of comforting authority figure, or by being chased to death lol. Some trauma victims deal with near constant skill-regression to the point where their default is not being able to perform said skill. That being said, warmth from an authority figure can often be processed as enough love and kindness to a trauma victim that it temporarily makes them feel safe enough to re-progress said skills

  • @panspermiapancakes
    @panspermiapancakes 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

SpongeBob knows how to drive, he just fails under the pressure of tests, especially if he's being watched during it. It's something that some people go through in real life. It's kind of like being at work and doing a great job but the moment the supervisor gets near you and watches your performance, it creates a massive amount of pressure and you start making mistakes in front of the supervisor.
In the first episode when Bob applies at the Krabby Patty, his biggest fear is the interview itself. Technically, SpongeBob did fail his interview, but Mr. Krabb's decided to prank SpongeBob by sending him on a mission that was impossible to accomplish, yet he somehow managed to do what was asked of him and he landed the job.
If he could take his drivers test without someone in the car with him, he'd probably pass it quickly. Since that isn't an option, he is stuck without a drivers license. lol

I don't think Spongebob is depressed per se, I just think he's VERY emotionally volatile. Whatever emotion he feels at the moment, he feels INTENSELY and those emotions can change very quickly. When he's sad, he's VERY sad- but when he's happy, he's VERY happy. I do understand the argument for him being depressed though

  • @Joseph-bb7yj

Short answer, no, SpongeBob is not depressed. SpongeBob may feel emotions of sadness or frustration or anger sometimes but don’t we all. SpongeBob can’t feel such emotions as depression because his spongey material saves him from so. If anything SpongeBob doesn’t feel any emotions for others aka when the SpongeBob voice actor calls SpongeBob one not to physically love someone, and instead makes everyone around him suffer when he realizes the camera is on.

Its not just depression for him as Tom Kenny his voice actor thinks Spongebob has Asperger Syndrome too. Hes aware of that long running theory that our iconic Sea Sponge might be on the spectrum like me :) He definitely has qualities and traits of an Autistic person himself too. He might also have bad OCD as obsesses over small things really badly like trying to get things right and in order and is always trying to make Mr Krabs happy all the time.

The episodes explored show how Spongebob shares many behaviors also common in people with ADHD to varying degrees. Things like
    - hyper-focussing on one task even until obsession, unintentionally neglecting all others (Gary Come Home plot)
    - experiencing strong emotions, especially negative ones, very intensely and coming off as sensitive (Spongebob in general)
    - feelings of defeat or utter failure in face of minor setbacks or criticism, as well as excessive perfectionism (Pickles plot)
    - difficulty organizing and prioritizing tasks, especially when thrown off focus
    - difficulty perceiving and respecting others' boundaries or differing social norms, but not with ill intention, and continuing to do so until explicitly told to stop, which may come off as intrusive and annoying
    - difficulty staying calm, or calming down, when excited or agitated. Comparably to a state of constant, eternal brainstorming
    - identity crises and/or frequent feelings of being perceived as a liar, or an impostor
    - "unusually" strong sense of justice even if never taught so, and a desire to undo past injustices
Keep in mind that these behaviors and symptoms also occur with other disorders, such as the mentioned OCD, which may also be co-morbid with ADHD. Obsessive behavior is very frequent in ADHD as well, but *may* lack the compulsive component seen with OCD.

When you get older, You think his lifestyle is bad.
He's a child stuck in an adult body.
He works at a dead end minimum wage food service job with a toxic egotistical cheapskate boss, and his coworker despises him.
He doesn't own a car or has his own drivers license, and doesn't know how to operate a car.
But at the same time, despite his life not being perfect in an adult lens, he seems like he's doing well for himself. He has a fancy 2-story house, a snail, he has friends, has a full-time job he enjoys doing, and seems like he's getting paid well, has job beneifts, such as a 401k, pet insurance, health insurance etc, and also gets help from his parents too probably.

SpongeBob perplexes me. He's hated by everyone, when all he ever does is try. But he seems not to understand certain social cues. In a vacuum, you might say this is a sign of some form of mental deficiency, or developmental problem. But this to me seems a lot more like a PTSD response, and depression. If you couple this with his unintentional, and yet all too real sociopathic tendencies (remember the whirlybird disaster), and the fact that, despite Squidward's unbelievable annoyance with him, he sticks around and even sticks up for him, helps him and taks care of him when he needs it, and this would explain SpongeBob's undying loyalty in his 'friendship' towards him, in spite of the seeming lack of reciprocation, it seems to me that there is a lot more to SpongeBob's behavior, and the dynamic between him and his friends then is immediately evident in the show.

When i was searching about OCPD I learned this and wanted to share it with you guys too "OCPD can be difficult to diagnose, as most people with a personality disorder don’t think there’s a problem with their behavior or way of thinking. When they do seek help, it’s often because of anxiety or depression due to the problems created by their personality disorder, such as losing their job or relationships, not the disorder itself."

He loves his work, he enjoys working with Squidward he's really in his element when working at the Krusty Krab, and being forced away from there into a restaurant that has a different atmosphere no customers and no coworkers, and unintuitive he can look to disrupts all the things he loves about being a fry cook.
I have shared a similair expirience and I think it's partially why I love Spongebob (season 1-3 is gold the rest doesn't aproach it, especially not after the fucking squid baby episode) so much, he's a deeply relatable character and I think he did help me develop into the person I am today.
