    *Theory FAQs!*
*Q:* Why do you use facial features as evidence if the Atlanteans have augmented bodies?
*A:* While the Atlanteans have augmented bodies, they also seem to have their original faces. Their faces have a different skin color than the rest of their bodies, their eyes seem natural, and the fact that the Atlanteans eat suggests their mouths are also natural.
*Q:* Doesn't everyone call Squidward (including himself) an Octopus?
*A:* That could be because Squidward's species forgot where they came from, and everyone just started calling Squidward's species Octopuses because that's what they looked most like. That's also why Squidward and his species look so different from the other octopuses we see in the show.

These aren't Faqs..these are excuses to the holes people have poked in your "theory." You really do suck at what you do and have a complete lack of experience/skill. You do realize there is more to being successful as a TH-camr than just filming yourself spewing thoughts you quickly jotted down on a subject right? There is a lot required to be an entertainer and/or instructor in each medium. It's not something you just do. It's like any other specialized industry of work. sorry to burst your bubble (see what I did there?) but if you don't like being told you are wrong, this is not the career for you until you improve your work.

The strangest aspect of Tentacle Acres is that neither Squidward nor any of the other residents painted once during that episode. Squidward was definitely enamored by the segregated community’s predilection for obscure food items, interpretive dance, biking, and playing the clarinet. But he ultimately forgot what made his life special: art. He went to school for it. Perhaps most of the squids look down on art, in opposition to their heritage.

Another point of connection too the Atlanteans and Squidward's species is just how quickly both parties completely loose their cool when something annoys them. Before someone says it, popping the Atlanteans most prized cultural artifact is *ABSOLUTELY* worth being pissed off about and honestly who wouldn't feel intense anger if something like that happened; the point I'm trying to make is before the bubble popped the Atlanteans were shown to have a reasonable grasp on their anger, just enough to talk things out before resorting too violence, but they still have a short temper. Now look at Squidward's people, one of their defining characteristics as a people is their short temper; the character traits of certain types of species in Spongebob have remained fairly consistent over the years, sponges find joy everywhere they go, starfishes are just kind of dumb, crabs are some level of greedy, and the regular fish are just not all there in the head, and the Atlanteans and Squidward's species both share a trait, having a short temper. So, yeah. =P

I'm actually with you on _both_ points. One does not exclude the other:
An "inofficial retcon" makes this a plausibility.
The connection to the Atlanteans just works a bit too well to be a mere coincidence.
At the very beginning of the show, Squidward's race was probably an intentionally vague.
However, the creator Stephen Hillenburg was a marine biologist, so an _unintentional_ mixup is unlikely.
How Squidward is neither squid nor octopus was well pointed out in this video.
I never even thought much about how there are actually both of these species in this show.

While this makes sense I'd postulate a different possibility: Divergent evolution. I think rather than extreme degrees of body modification, it's more likely that the two species simply evolved separately-- likely due to differing environmental factors. And as for the bubble thing, it could be the exact opposite-- not that they were shunned for disliking the bubble, but that they dislike bubbles because they remind them (at their base evolutionary level) of a superior version of themselves.

This video is really well done and well narrated!
In my headcanon I've always thought that the octopuses in the show could've had a lot of history.
They seems really different from the other species that are more animalistic.
You forgot to mention the cephalopod lodge that doesn't looks like a sect or something esoteric, but a place where the cephalopods learn their traditions and rituals.
In fact I've never felt that could've been a dangerous place for Squidward, he had a lot of respect and was one of the highest members.
Tentacles Acres was a more modern version of Atlantis, the Cephalopod Lodge is more traditional.
Also it's really strange that everyone of the octopuses likes the clarinet, interpretative dance and loves to paint themselves.
The reason could be that are their traditions.
About Squilliam, it seems the only one of their society that is so rich and recognized by everyone.
I guess he had some sort of noble origins. As we could assume by his surname: Fancyson III.
I can't believe that this guy became rich jus by himself.
Surely is skilled, but he already had this wealth, he just become richer.
Maybe his ancestor was a king that for some reasons was exiled or left Atlantis because he didn't agree with the actual leader.
He knows about that and his rivalry with Squidward could be explained that he wanted to be treated as a king and our stubborn friend couldn't believe that or doesn't accept that.
Maybe Squidward has noble origins too and is the only one that knows that, but no one would accept a self proclaimed king.
And most of all a real king as Squilliam, as I already mentioned.
Anyway he often likes to represent himself as a king.
Well... anyway I think he could a good king! 😁 I imagine Squilliam more like king Julien from Madagascar! 😂

To add to this theory, look at the color of neptune and squidward. its very similar. I think the split was actually one of pride. The atlanteans in current times worship neptune while the squids worship themselves. The art they make is " in their gods image" while the squids make art in their own image. It's closer a relation to heaven and hell. The sin of pride being their downfall and atlantens giving up their earthly form to achieve something greater than themselves.

Unwanted theory: From the basis of this, it could be that Squidward's ilk might be accurately described as an admixture of native populations of terrastrial squid and the alien Atlantean 'colonizers'. Notice, how despite being really similar to the Atlanteans, Squidward's people seem fit very well (albeit in lower social positions) with oceanic society and with them being similar enough with the Bikini Bottom residents in such a way that they are not as jarring as their less modern (as in more ancient, not necessarily unadvanced) ancestors are.
