- My buddy @mattneff hit me up and told me about this crazy theory he had that has to do with the spongebob christmas special. Plankton feeds everyone jerktonium but matts theory completely exposes the residents of bikini bottom for already being jerks and the jerktonium itself being a placebo!

This only works if they're told it has some in it. Can't be a placebo if they don't know the ingredients
Exactly, placebo only works because people are led to believe that they are taking medicine. These people don't have any knowledge about the jerktonium, and therefore could never, under any circumstances, be under a placebo effect.
I see what you were trying to say, but it can if they don’t know the ingredients, it can’t if they don’t know it was supposed to be anything other than ordinary fruitcake
A placebo would be there is no jerktonium but plankton has told people it would make them jerks upon eating
Plankton never told any of the fish the fruitcake had jerktonium. SpongeBob was even the one who gave it to everyone. The only people who knew the ingredients were plankton, Karen, and the viewers

The problem with calling it a placebo is a placebo doesn’t work if you don’t know that it’s supposed to do anything
It is literally reliant on you expecting it to do a particular thing, that’s how the placebo effect works
No one was aware that this was supposed to make them jerks
they didn't even know what was jerktonium in the first place if it was recently found or made up by plankton

Nice theory but that’s not how placebo’s work they didn’t know that the fruitcake had jerktonium in it couldn’t be a placebo
My theory is that jerktonium isn't a placebo, but it brings out the worst of peoples personalities. Say if someone that isn't from bikini bottom consumes it, the result wouldn't be as extreme as if someone from bikini bottom consumes it. This is because the bikini bottom resident was already a jerk, and the jerktonium just amped it up. So, the result of consuming jertonium really depends on how much of a jerk the consumer was originally.
this is a MUCH better theory considering the fact his explanation of placebo is just plain wrong and doesnt work that way.
Aren't there episodes where Spongebob himself is a complete jerk to some people? Stuck in the Wringer is one of those episodes where where he ends up being rather mean to Patrick. Naughty Nautical Neighbors is another one, where Spongebob and Patrick are tricked into legitimately hating each other. It has been shown that even Spongebob can be at his worst sometimes.
A placido only works if you think it will work the people had no idea about the jerktonium so that’s a hole

There was also that one episode with the no spongebob day where everyone left bikini bottom to spend an entire day without spongebob around.

The jerktonium doesn't make you a jerk, it just takes your forces to keep your inner jerk 0 and you can't stop it from exiting you, this meaning it isn't a placebo, it just takes your worst intentions out, also this would explain why spongebob was immune, he didn't have any bad intention ever in his life
I think the reason almost all of bikini bottom is evil is because despite the human like forms they take they’ll still wild life deep down it’s all shown in feral friends where the sea creatures especially squidwrad and pearl all become wild and dangerous.
I can’t believe you forgot to mention how Squidward is also immune to Jerktonium because he’s “already a jerk” (AKA he has depression and everyone in Bikini Bottom hates him for it)

also not to mention he didn't even eat the fruit cake because he was home all day and ingored spongebob (also krabs was a jerk despite not given the cake so there's another plot hole, unless the infection is airborne or "current-borne")

Ive been watching this special for years and its one of my favorite pieces of Spongebob media. This was such a fun video to watch...even if its completely wrong because no one knew about JT beforehand

Might sound random, but I just enjoy it everytime you’ve talked about a season 8 episode.
This theory, while being not far from the truth, was wrong. It cannot be a placebo effect due to SpongeBob gives out jerktonium fruitcakes without knowing of jerktonium. The people who eat them also don’t know about jerktonium because SpongeBob did not know and could not tell them. This whole scene is like 2 sentences at time stamp (1:46). It is way more likely that jerktonium reacts will people in a poor way, bringing out inner jerk and magnifying it. This would explain why SpongeBob was not affected, having no inner jerk and being a flower of goodness. Sandy was affected but as she is never really a jerk would still help SpongeBob. Her inner jerk was not that strong. Other people, being cured by a finger snap would have very weak inner jerks and have it fail easily.
In summary, people are jerks to diffrent levels with SpongeBob not being a jerk at all. The jerktonium brings out inner jerks of people due to some biological connection. This is no placebo, proably just a result of a radioactive material plankton found (it literally glows - 4:01) in bikini bottom or bakini atoll, a nuke testing site.

I know many people pointed it out already, but it can't be a placebo if they think it's just a normal fruitcake, they have to know what it's supposed to do for it to work like that
if this were the case you could argue it would technically be a nocebo effect, since being a jerk is a negative outcome, but it is not as the fish are not told before eating the fruitcake of its effects, so no placebo or nocebo here
Still better than Santa Inc. (plus a ton of recent lineup of Garbage Christmas Specials made by real Jerks)!

How radioactive is it?
Fun fact this episode aired on CBS. At the time (back on 2012) my parents didn't have cable so I had to watch SpongeBob at my grandma, aunts, or on DVD. Also I didn't use streaming services at the time so I didn't look for SpongeBob online. At the time I thought it was so cool that one of the local antenna channels was showing a SpongeBob christmas episode and I think since then it's the only SpongeBob episode that aired outside of nick (not including streaming).

If plankton’s fruitcakes are so great why doesn’t he just sell them?
A good real-time example is crocs. I had a pair in 2005 and got bullied for it. Now they’re everywhere. I keep to myself now.

the ONLY WAY this works is if the jerktonium and its effects was known to the entire town but it was not, as for something to be a placebo it needs to be known in the first place but it was only plankton that knew what the Jerktonium was
