My dad was watching the braves as I was walking through the living room....I was 9 or 10 yrs old....he stopped me and told me to watch ," this guy is gonna hit a homerun " ....I watched the at bat....and wouldn't you know it , he hit a freaking homerun 😂. Braves for life after that😂
There’s never been a nicer player..As a kid I can remember waiting after games when the Braves came to Philly and Murphy always signed autographs and was great with the fans..I truly looked up to the man
Thank you for the comment and sharing your memory. By all accounts he is a great guy. Our personal opinion is that he deserves hall of fame consideration. Thank you for watching!
Lived in a small town back in '84. Didn't get a lot of stations, but we did get TBS. Watched the Braves every night. Murphy and the Braves hooked me. Been a Braves fan since.
I remember Dale Murphy as a kid back in the 80s. This dude was a freakin beast ! Back to back MVP's. One of the greatest runs in mlb history. Guaranteed first ballot hof. Shows you how fickle life is in sports.
He was certainly good for a period of time; I just think he didn't do it for long enough. Similar to the career that Don Mattingly had around the same time. Thank you for the comment!
As a youth I remember Dale Murphy's excellence. Because I only watched baseball in era's (84-89, 01-08, and 22-present) I found it hard to believe he wasn't in the hall... he had a huge presence in the 80's I'll never forget.
I remember the same era, and in my mind he was one of the most dominant players of the time as evidenced by his back to back MVPs. I know he fizzled out a little early but it seems a shame he isn’t in the HOF. Thank you for the comment!
Mostly known for his hitting, but he was an excellent center fielder, covered a lot of ground and a strong, accurate arm. His numbers tailed off late in his career, but worthy of the HOF.
Anyone who played with Murph will tell you that he was the ultimate teammate. You’ll never hear a fan or teammate ever have anything bad to say about him either. The easiest guy in all of sports to root for.
I grew up watching him on TBS. I used to have all of his stats memorized. Great player. Great guy. I was at a Braves game when the trade was announced. He announced his retirement on the same day I graduated from high school. He had a memorable career.
I'm from Detroit and a lifelong Tigers fan. Also watched a lot of Braves baseball back in the day since we got TBS in thr area. When I started collecting Starting Lineups as a kid, if I couldn't find a Tigers player, I was looking for a Braves player. Only landed 2 Braves, Ozzie Virgil and Dale Murphy.
I think the bottom line is that he just didn’t do it at a high level for long enough. Though the peak of his career was pretty special. Thank you for the comment!
Why some American League team did not pick him up as a designated hitter always baffled me. If not for a playoff/series run, but as a show of respect and give him the opportunity to reach 400 career home runs.
Pete has no one else to blame but himself. He knew the consequences and he made a choice to break the rules anyway. He was, and still is, a complete *ss about the whole situation. Maybe if he admitted to and took some responsibility for his own bad choices instead of lying and blaming others, maybe he'd be in by now.
His career stats may not warrant inclusion to the HoF on their own (so very close) but if sportswriters use the “character clause” to keep out some ball players - can’t it be used to boost a player like Murph to put him in the HoF?
His numbers qualify for the hall of good. He's not in the HOF for a reason. He was clearly on his way at one point and then fell off a cliff prematurely. Don Mattingly was another example. The HOF shouldn't lower their standards with questionable players.
No question Dale Murphy was a force in the early 80’s but, to reach the HOF one must distinguish himself from others for more than just a handful of seasons. Please don’t misunderstand me, he was fun to watch and I always appreciated his character and humility but a HOF’er…..? Sorry no……
What about his 220 and 230 seasons in the late 80s that made the Braves trade him to the Phillies which he did finish off pretty well in 90 and 91 then the injuries in 92 basically ruined his career? Murphy was a stud in the early and mid 80s no question but the last several seasons weren't great. With the HoF being watered down I'd put him in today just for his 2 mvps and decent numbers
Absolute injustice this man is not in the hall. Not only a superb ball player but a class act as a human being.
No. He isn’t that level
i did not forget him he is the reason i still watch the braves today
@@moonie2465 glad he is still top of mind!

@ good story!
I grew up in Atlanta, watched Murphy at the old Fulton County Stadium.
He was a beast in the mid 80s. Thank you for sharing!
@@BBUYTTVMurphy and Bob Horner hitting 4th and 5th. Witnessing those Back to Back homers, was glorious.
@@TradeforpeaceMoney that was a great combination. I don’t think people remember how good those two were at the time.
Dale Murphy should be in HOF
He was an incredible player

No offense to Harold Baines, but if he's in, Murphy needs to get in.

That Minosa, Simmonds, Larkin, Kaat, and Baines are in and this guy is not is outrageous.

Other than being a great baseball player, he is a much better person.

Put him in the HOF, yall are some suckers for leaving him out.

You are probably right. He was just so good for a stretch of years. Just like with Mattingly seems strange that such a good player isn’t in.
Also the braves were terrible most year with Murphy he’s was one of the only stars it’s hard to put up those numbers on a bad team

Scott Rolen? Harold Baines?
Besides mvps, murphy is like Moises alou. Hall of really good. Not hall of fame. Also alou should arguably won an mvp himself.
