*Joseph I met your brother Jimmy and Paul Harwood in Atlanta during another tour Mahogany Rush was on and he and Paul were so engaging and friendly, we musta talked for about 10 minutes after a soundcheck at the Electric Ballroom. Also Paul Levesque left me 2 tickets at the Omni Arena Will Call when Mahogany Rush was on tour with Aerosmith in 79. Your brother's band inspired a lot of people including me.*

@zandig666 *I met Frank over the phone and visited him at his hotel room just before a show that I described here in the comments section. Frank was very gracious to me and my friend Mike Sims who got a chance to tour America's Eastern Seaboard circuit playing his guitar at college town clubs and campuses. Frank signed a Jimi autobiography book I had, and when he looked through the book he paused for a few seconds when he saw a picture taken at Jimi's funeral. Also Frank said "Wait by the elevator in the lobby." About 20 minutes Frank later with Jimmy and Paul exited an elevator and he tolded me to join him as we went into the The Electric Ballroom Club, we got to see the show for free.*

So cool! I was a big Frank Marino fan when I was a kid, I was in my third band by then, 16 years old in '79 playing a pre CBS Jazz Master. Btw your pre CBS Strat is a beauty!
I sat home after school for hours trying to memorize Frank's licks and driving my parents up the wall while doing so! Eventually got into a good band playing bass ( got in playing Johnny B Good riffs like on the live album.) Love those bass lines. We got tapped by Steel Breeze to dial in their brand new Yamaha sound system. Damn that was loud for a bunch of teenagers to get that kind of opportunity.
Thanks Frank Marino for the big influence you had on me.🤘

  • @jimbo5550
    @jimbo5550 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Love to see Frank getting some recognition! Frank was tapping before 79' just listen to King Bee versions as early as you can find his versions. Def in 77' but I'm sure he worked on it for years. Also Lenny Breau was doing two hand harmonics in the mid 60's. EVH carved his version into homes around the world for sure!!

Playing Frank Marino one a strat is sacrilege, and Frank is still Jamming!!!...Frank is extremely underrated "It's all about the blues" - Frank Marino
Frank also plays slide without a slide, he uses a bigsby...I still can't figure that one out
I also found Pat travers back in the mid to late 70's with "Puttin' It Straight"

Ted was super famous all the rock mags had him on. Tv etc. and crowd. Loved Ted but when Frank came on. The crowd got quite were zoned in on frank. Frank was on fire. Kicking up notch by notch blowing Ted journey away Eddie money was cool. He sat on edge of stage.getting into frank. Loving it. Ted looked a little bugged walked off but. Frank. Won that battle

First heard of Frank Marino in 1975. While not mainstream in terms of commercial success he is one of the baddest axemen to ever saddle up. Would love to see him and Bonamassa hook up for a friendly blues duel. What melodic riff mayhem that would be to hear.

Love your Channel David much appreciated! Being from Canada .....Frank is a BMF guitar playing , recording and producing guru. Tapping was just one 10th of what one could expect from the tickle trunk go back to the early 70's his tapping sounds like a harmony pedal in overdrive even before EHX came out with a gadget. Bad bad bad in a good way

@@FURDOG1961 Frank was is and will always be a master. Before releasing Maxoom in 73 he was a young outstanding guitarist. He would blow us away with his knowledge of blues, jazz, rock licks. I never saw him tapping in the early years but he has demonstrated it in live shows back then. During the 80's he scaled down to clubs and smaller stages. My buddy did the sound for him then and he would say, that he's aging like a fine wine.

great video. re: the harmonic tapping technique, yes, Frank was doing it before the VH phenomenon and it can be heard on earlier studio recordings where for many years i believed it to be an octavia effect. in addition to the harmonic tapping Frank does an amazing faux slide guitar using the whammy bar. it has to be seen to be believed as on studio recording it really does sound like he's using a slide. i saw Frank do a show locally a few years back and he has not slipped one bit and performs at the highest level. truly amazing and very underrated indeed.

Frank Marino is one my all time favorite players ... as for live albums ... there are three ... Kiss Alive, Rush-All the Worlds a Stage, and Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush Live ... I have listen to those recordings thousands of times and they never get old ... a true representation of live music from the 70's ... Frank Marino covers Albert King's song "I'll play the blues for you" on A Tribute to Albert King and it is absolutely one of the best ... Frank gets a lot of mileage outta the pentatonic scale with such conviction, articulations and speed ... its easy to see why those who have listened to him cite him as being such an influential guitarist in their lives ... Thank you for the three for all ... love the channel and the videos ... Thanks for sharing ...

@@larrylauner9671 no comparison Ted was theatrical running and jumping stuff but musically frank stood in one spot and put every once into playing masterpiece full on 10 min jams that were not boring

I went to Cal Jam 2! I was in HS, 16 at the time. It took hours to get to the site (Ontario Speedway - now Ontario airport) - traffic was backed up for miles. Lots of great performances but what I enjoyed most was Mahogany Rush, Heart and Santana. Frank’s playing is phenomenal, was then, even more so today 😊

First, you play great man! Second, I got to see Frank around 2012 in a small club. Guy still ripped it up and sound was just right.

I had/have that same album ,I remember very well how I was drawn to Franks style of playing. Growing up in Illinois in the 70’s,I was able to see Frank in Chicago at Cominsky 1978. I went on to become a huge SRV fan just a few years later. Thank you for this lesson.

LATE NIGHT, Frank marino came out with a 3 DVD box set of his live concert it cost $100 dollars but I'm sure there is some good licks on it. Also there is a japan Midnight special show of frank marino harmonic tapping on the song King Bee in 1979 to check that out also. There is a lot more of frank marino jazz licks he uses in his album IV

Unfortunately given Frank's latest announcement regarding his health, I don't think anyone will be ever seeing him perform live ever again. I'm gutted at that news and the only compensation for me is having his recent live at the Agora box set which is staggeringly brilliant.

It used to be a cool way of discovering new music; reading an article in a guitar magazine and then buying a record by an artist mentioned in an interview. Now with iTunes I think music isn’t as appreciated as you can just stream it and move on to the next artist. When you bought a record you listened to it over and over and really appreciated it
