well...thatopening riff solo was Johnny Winter in a nutshell....a raging nutshell...and very tasty too...great stuff loved that.....very "substantial" quality rock.....cheers.
Even as Johnny was losing his eyesight he was still able to play. A good friend of mine witnessed it in a small local bar in Upstate N. Y. back in the day. Someone from his crew would walk him out to the stage and sat him down in a chair and he would just blow everyone's mind with his ability to play. Kool lesson Dave 👍
Great lesson I love Johnny Winter- Still Alive and Well was one of my fave albums the man is a legend among legends but I dont think he gets the recognition he deserves!
Thank you for breaking down a nice compilation of "Johnny licks" for a guitar dummy like me! I'm gonna take this and run!! And as Arnold says, "Ahl be back!"
Great job David. I think it’s worth mentioning that Johnny was using a thumb pick and hybrid picked a lot. Very unique style, always fit in the “right amount of notes”.
Thanks David for this excellent Johnny Winter tutorial. As a JW fan since seeing on a brief TV segment in 1972, I truly appreciate you covering this material that doesn't seem to get the TH-cam coverage it deserves. My fav is Mean Town Blues. Incredible!
Amazing guitar player! Saw him a few times... certainly commands your attention live..freaking amazing!!! Well done, David! Hard to cover Johnny's licks, so in your face , you did a fine job👍🏻
Another outstanding lesson and breakdown. Thank you sir! I love your content. You are such a down to earth teacher and an amazing guitarist. Thank you so much for what you do!
Loved that intro David. Big Johnny Winter fan. Love his stuff with Rick Derringer. If you guys haven’t heard Let Me In I think it’s one of his best albums.
One of the best deep dive lessons on YT. Johnny was a monster. Such a great raw talent, and an ear for great hooks. Thanks for the lesson. First rate chops as well. Bravo!
You continue to keep my head rocking David. I'm going to find ya in the next life and jam. Singing with the King Elvis 1st, then him and I are coming to find ya. 🎤🎸🎹🪕
Johnny Winter for me is one of those guitar players where it's the subtle nuances that makes him so unique. He wasn't like Jeff Beck where the moment you hear him it's something so unique and drags you to a place you didn't expect. However Johnny would play something you expect and want to hear in a very unique and Interesting way. He to me was like the American Version of Rory Gallagher, very intense wild, raw players that had layers of nuance playing pretty expected and traditional stuff but leaving their fingerprints all over it
A suggestion: Steve Hunter who player with Mitch Ryder, Alice Cooper solo career band as well as Lou Reeds Rock & Roll Animal phase. He wrote played some of the solos like on the intro to Sweet Jane. If you have never listened to those old live Lou Reed albums, I recommend checking them out. The music and playing holds up to the current day. Thnaks David!
This is who I learned my first real licks from more than 50 yrs ago. Thanks.
Johnny had one foot in the blues and one in rock & roll. what a great showman, slide player and producer. A true legend!
Good job. Memory Pain has almost every blues lick you're ever going to need.
You got some serious chops, David!
I Guess I'll Go Awayyyyy!!! 🔥 🐦 Very, very good stuff here, sir!

Johnny put out some very wild and unique guitar parts aside from driving blues and hard rock and roll. One of a kind.
Thank you for breaking down a nice compilation of "Johnny licks" for a guitar dummy like me!
I'm gonna take this and run!! And as Arnold says, "Ahl be back!"
