Teacher here and his advice at the end is true. I teach 13-15 year old students entering high school, and I try to instill the idea that we try hard, and sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. How we handle things when it doesn't will truly define who we become as people and our success in life. You can tell that he is a good headmaster from his interactions and advice. Love your videos!

Don’t let this one test define who you are. Get a good night of sleep and go in with a positive mindset. And if there’s a difficult question, don’t let it derail you for the rest of the exam. Take a deep breath and blow it out slowly. You got this!

As someone who got an 8 (strong A) in English Language GCSE, and is now taking both English Language and English Literature A-Level...I'm never moving to Korea. This paper seems to test general knowledge rather than comprehension of English lol like that graph question looked like something I'd get on a maths paper. Honestly, my takeaway from this is that you might as well be reading a collection of snippets from Masters level research papers!

    • @mytalllittlebunny

this is the case for most top cities in Asia
the english papers and most other subjects ranging from history to physics are testing your skills at taking the exam rather than learning actual knowledge.
tbh as someone who has lived tht life
i dont regret or think that bad of it, it taught me discipline whilst my creative thinking side I nurtured on my own elsewhere

''you might as well be reading a collection of snippets from Masters level research papers'' That is pretty much the objective of the test. Most Koreans don't really use English that much unless you are reading legal documents, advanced textbooks, and research papers. Besides learning speaking English in like elementary and early middle school, they just concentrate on reading comprehension for the purpose I mentioned.

A lot of the passages they use for SAT seems to come from university level papers, so maybe someone who reads similar papers regularly can tell us if it's actually reasonable for high schoolers to be able to solve them within given time.

I just want to give a shout out to who ever it is on your team that does the translations. Translating those passages into Korean must have been like sitting their own mini SAT all over again.
As an English teacher in Korea, I can emphatically state NONE of these questions are standard basic English. I had to help some kids prepare for this test, and I struggled to understand what was being asked. The questions seemed to be straight from an economics doctorate level text / research paper!

Surprisingly got everything correct coming from an Indian background. It actually didn't feel that confusing at all. But I don't expected everyone to grasp it so quickly, I feel this basically tests speed reading and reading comprehension. But then again I am a Physicist, and this felt more like logical reasoning.

Although of course you should have the basics of English down to answer the questions

I mean that’s the point right? Highly advanced tests to sort students into top universities? As far as I remember (as a fresh high school graduate, mind you), most other exams aren’t that difficult for the average student.
If you’re talking about education as a whole, then yes there’s a million different ways it can be improved. The higher education culture there is also relevant, but I’d argue the SAT (maybe not KSAT, but they are really similar from what I can see) fulfill its job well.

Whenever I hear about these types of exams, I can only think that it'd make me want to study abroad. Learn English well enough to do one of these, be decent in math, and you're going to be able to get a high score on the SAT and ACT exams in the U.S. and get into a mid- to high-tier school, probably with scholarships. No idea how it is in UK schools, but I'd imagine with good academic records it'd be doable. Not to mention whatever other countries one might be interested in throughout the world.

You guys should do the American SAT and ACT. We take the SAT at the end of Sophomore year and the ACT around senior year. The scores on them don’t really count towards anything but colleges like when you take them as it’s a good indicator of your level. Most universities actually have a minimum SAT score that you should keep an eye on. Earning 2600 is the perfect score and schools will be clamoring for you to go them. Unfortunately very few students ever get it as maybe one every year gets it. The students that score high are usually science and English program students. Getting AP or gifted is no guarantee of doing well on those tests.
The SAT requires a lot of vocabulary skills as every year a new guide is published with new words you need to memorize and understand.

I've always been aware of the insane amount of pressure students in Asia faced when trying to get into uni, but now as I study the SQE I feel like I understand how exactly debilitating studying for exams that are designed to trip you up are 😭

  • @Eira436

This hits home to me as someone who grew up in East Asia. I remember how studying was all I ever did/cared about, so I paid zero attention to developing my self-esteem, hobbies and other skills. Everything was about getting into a top university. And when I finally did it, the next milestone was to graduate with decent grades. When I graduated and finally got to decide what I wanted to do, I felt like a 3-year-old child thrown in at the deep end. Although I excelled at school, many of my less academic peers who spent time developing their hobbies, confidence and interpersonal skills are seeing much better success in the conventional sense of the term. I have to spend a lot more time making up for what I neglected in childhood.

This is like when you are asked to write a book report and you do it quickly and easily on half a page and are then told it needs to be at least 4 pages, so you go back in and try to stretch it out as much as possible inserting words that arent needed. Thats this whole test. This test is the reason so many people are afraid to speak in english, and lack conversational/listening skills. They are too busy trying to learn this test and not actual english. Sad day. I pity the korean student. You have my pity. Dont give up on english. You may not pass this test, but you can still learn to speak english better than anyone who passes this test, without it.

Honestly had to fast forward thru the questions, because they made my head hurt 😆 but the words by Mr. Smith at the end ring so true. My parents were so strict about grades and tests and college, they thought they were the end-all, be-all for my future life and now I’m a stay at home mom 🙃 teacher in my former days. Hope to eventually get back to the classroom, but it’s the best decision we made as a family. I’m proud of everything I worked so hard for, but I don’t push my kids as hard as my parents pushed me. It’s not worth the stress. Btw my husband is very successful in his business, very hard working and barely finished 2-year college. 😉

What's super sad about this being the big exam students study for means they don't really study anything but reading comprehension. I also studied English as a foreign language in school in a non-anglophone country (but not Korea) and our final years of school are also a lot of essay production, like the headmaster for British students too. You need to understand literature and articles for essay writing (so reading comprehension) *and* you have to write essays, so you've got at least two areas of foreign language learning covered and it actually prepares you for what might be expected of you in university. My country is by no means perfect at teaching English, but seeing this makes me feel very sad for Korean students because this exam is so hard and must be so stressful but it's only difficult for difficulty's sake. If you must make an exam multiple choice for reading comprehension, you can always make it difficult on an academic level, but not in a way that is intentionally trying to trick you.
For example, I took TOEFL recently and the format for reading was kind of new to me because like I said I was only really used to essay questions and such, but I still scored really high because if you know English, it's easily doable because it's not intentionally trying to trick you.

I think the thing with most Asian education systems is they focus too much on multiple choices. They trained students to do multiple choices, then once they got in uni (or apply for studying abroad) boom, essays, researches, reports, thesis, etc. And many aren't prepared for that so they have no idea how to write one

Honestly, based on the questions in the video, it wasn't as hard as I tought it would be. On all the questions for which we got the answer here, I got only 2 wrong and English is not even my first language. But I guess those were part of the easiest questions in the exam, so it's still pretty hard for a non-native speaker (even worse with the time limit). Good luck to all koreans who will take this test.
