Teacher here and his advice at the end is true. I teach 13-15 year old students entering high school, and I try to instill the idea that we try hard, and sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. How we handle things when it doesn't will truly define who we become as people and our success in life. You can tell that he is a good headmaster from his interactions and advice. Love your videos!

man propose god dispose. (reverend insanity a fantasy book) Meaning you give your plan and the world or luck decides.
We love games because hard work is always rewarded. Life isn't like that. You might do the right thing and not be rewarded.
But if your looking at the sky when it stops to rain you see the clear blue sky. But if your looking down a pit. No matter wether clouds part or not you'll see nothing out of this hole... So if your sad and in the wrong place you'll never get out. But if your in the right place. Even if not now one day it might clear up. So seek the right environement. (thats from me)

I just want to give a shout out to who ever it is on your team that does the translations. Translating those passages into Korean must have been like sitting their own mini SAT all over again.
As an English teacher in Korea, I can emphatically state NONE of these questions are standard basic English. I had to help some kids prepare for this test, and I struggled to understand what was being asked. The questions seemed to be straight from an economics doctorate level text / research paper!

@@yangrepositorybkupman sadly, from what I've seen, learning English is not the goal of the Korean English education system. If it were, after 9 years of study, the students would be fluent. No, the goal of the entire 9 years of "English study" seems to be to pass this exam.

@@goulash75 You are correct that learning English is not the goal of the Korean English education. The English test is not really about testing students' fluency in English; it's designed to assess their ability to understand complex ideas, abstract concepts, and similar skills. Although it appears to be an English test, it actually evaluates students' logical thinking. The answers to the questions become clear through logical reasoning, and all answers can be derived from the given texts without adding subjective opinions. Most of the time, even people fluent in English get the answers wrong because they add their personal opinions.

This hits home to me as someone who grew up in East Asia. I remember how studying was all I ever did/cared about, so I paid zero attention to developing my self-esteem, hobbies and other skills. Everything was about getting into a top university. And when I finally did it, the next milestone was to graduate with decent grades. When I graduated and finally got to decide what I wanted to do, I felt like a 3-year-old child thrown in at the deep end. Although I excelled at school, many of my less academic peers who spent time developing their hobbies, confidence and interpersonal skills are seeing much better success in the conventional sense of the term. I have to spend a lot more time making up for what I neglected in childhood.

By your username, there’s a very high chances that you came from Malaysia. Regardless of that, Asian homes are usually this way.
Only difference is I’m not afraid to put myself out there since primary school, so I get to enjoy both worlds until I finished my degree. Although my final CGPA was not a celebrated one, I’m glad I did what I did when I went to study.
Skills will come to you when you open yourself to learn it, so good luck 🎉

I beg to differ. I found out midway through schooling time, studying is more fun and faster to understand in a group setting. Not only sitting in a group, but to converse and explain the questions and answers together and find better ways to answer (usually for physics and math) among each other. It quickly boosted my confidence and my social skills as we chatter this "global crisis" of ours. Hobbies on the other hand, only occurred after studying, unfortunately with much stress my group of friends usually find ourselves doing not so healthy hobbies I'm afraid, but yeah if you're stuck with the books and books only most of your days, socializing will be hard to establish in later life

    • @dayermusic5152

Your story resonates deeply. Growing up in a high-pressure academic culture can be so consuming, leaving little room for personal growth outside of grades and achievement. It’s as if life becomes a series of boxes to check: top university, good grades, stable career-and only once we reach those, do we start to realize how much we missed along the way.
I can imagine how disorienting it must feel to suddenly be thrust into a world that values skills and qualities we didn’t get a chance to nurture. Confidence, hobbies, self-esteem, resilience-these were set aside in the pursuit of academic excellence, and yet they’re the things that often lead to sustainable success and happiness. It’s like building a beautiful house without a foundation, and once the structure is up, realizing there’s so much more to construct underneath.
But here’s something I truly admire about your story: despite all of that, you’re still here, actively working to rebuild those parts of yourself. It’s incredibly courageous, and it shows a level of self-awareness and determination that not everyone has. Yes, some people may seem to have a head start in certain areas, but your story isn’t over. You’re learning and growing on your terms now, and that’s incredibly powerful.
I believe the qualities you’re cultivating now will make your path unique and meaningful. In the long run, success isn’t defined by how quickly we reach each milestone but by how authentically we pursue our journey. You’re doing exactly that. Keep going-you’re building a life with true depth and resilience.

But my parents were old school and only wanted me to do studies. I could have been an athlete but I didn't even bother once to try out for school sports. I missed out on a lot.

I mean that’s the point right? Highly advanced tests to sort students into top universities? As far as I remember (as a fresh high school graduate, mind you), most other exams aren’t that difficult for the average student.
If you’re talking about education as a whole, then yes there’s a million different ways it can be improved. The higher education culture there is also relevant, but I’d argue the SAT (maybe not KSAT, but they are really similar from what I can see) fulfill its job well.

yup, it’s crazy and has only been getting worse due to the growing popularity of ielts. people use advanced expressions yet aren’t even remotely fluent. listening to it feels bizzare. because wdym you are out here randomly throwing in ielts 8.5 vocab while simultaneously not being able to produce a single coherent sentence without stuttering or participate in an actual fast-paced conversation? i’d rather people use simpler words and mess up the grammar, at least their language will sound lively and REAL compared to that rehearsed type of speech pattern which they clearly acquired after attending a 3 month 2mil vnd course. because most of the ‘graduates’ have no idea what they are talking about and cannot apply those skills beyond a standardized test structure. not a native english speaker or a teacher, just someone who spent 2 years in vietnam and frequented the local english clubs. although i tried to avoid speaking english in other settings and would otherwise nói tiếng việt anywhere i could

After all what's the chance of them actually having to speak with native english speakers in the first place lol

Edit: I now understand that this is more to do with using English for work than actually speaking it, and that most of the questions were indeed aimed at English comprehension. Please stop correcting me lol.

Besides learning speaking English in like elementary and early middle school, they just concentrate on reading comprehension for the purpose I mentioned.

You guys should do the American SAT and ACT. We take the SAT at the end of Sophomore year and the ACT around senior year. The scores on them don’t really count towards anything but colleges like when you take them as it’s a good indicator of your level. Most universities actually have a minimum SAT score that you should keep an eye on. Earning 2600 is the perfect score and schools will be clamoring for you to go them. Unfortunately very few students ever get it as maybe one every year gets it. The students that score high are usually science and English program students. Getting AP or gifted is no guarantee of doing well on those tests.
The SAT requires a lot of vocabulary skills as every year a new guide is published with new words you need to memorize and understand.

"When you look at what success is later on in life, you might describe success in different ways." Koreans define 'success' in such an identical way and that makes young students suffer. Your word is the one that korean students need to be taught at school😭 As a korean who take korean SAT next week, I'll try my best ‘success ' in the way I want.

I used to work at a 5-star resort reception, and we had Korean and Japanese staffs too because we have plenty of Korean and Japanese tourists coming in. Every end of the month, our Front Office Manager made us do a write-up about something we experienced that month; it could be about anything in regards to work. It could be a long or short write-up (depends on us) and it was an outlet for us to rant about work so we loved doing it. However, our only Korean staff, Ms. Ji Hye (but she prefers being called Kelly), absolutely hated it because in her own words she "don't know how to write essay". She can speak English fairly fluently, but in terms of writing something on her own accord from zero (without a prompt like how conversations do), she blanks out completely. She told us that at school, they weren't taught creative and critical thinking when it comes to the English Language. And by watching this video, I kinda get what she meant by that. It all feels very technical and robotic to me.

Whenever I hear about these types of exams, I can only think that it'd make me want to study abroad. Learn English well enough to do one of these, be decent in math, and you're going to be able to get a high score on the SAT and ACT exams in the U.S. and get into a mid- to high-tier school, probably with scholarships. No idea how it is in UK schools, but I'd imagine with good academic records it'd be doable. Not to mention whatever other countries one might be interested in throughout the world.

I loved this video so much! I wish you'd shown all 15 questions onscreen so I could try answering all of them. I had to pause the video because it takes me longer to read from a laptop screen than from a tablet or paper, but I'm tickled that I missed only one of the onscreen questions. Untangling the convoluted questions tests cognitive acumen rather than rote learning. It was interesting to see how the wording of the questions reinforced messages about being a successful Korean citizen. It is the same patriotic-propaganda approach used in the American public education system. Having recently watched the English "schoolboys" train with the Korean military made this stand out to me. Excellent video. I enjoyed it a great deal.

As a guy who did really bad in SAT way back when and got rejected in most universities I applied to, I understand how big this is for Korean students. But I would echo what Mr. Smith said at the end - failure in the exam does not define who you are. I hope more students will take on this mindset and when they get to the marketplace and take on decision making positions, they will bring about the change in Korea's view of CSAT as well as how the test is put together - for the betterment of the next generation of exam takers and Korea's education system in general. Seriously, those CSAT problems are outrageous - it feels more like an entrance test for those seeking management consulting jobs in McKinsey or Deloitte. It is just not fair for most of those kids.

all the questions shown on the screen are actually really simple. It's like they said, trick questions almost. simply to test your concentration. Also funnily, i find the English in this actual paper not consistent. If i'm not mistaken, I think Korean follows American english conventions, but then, in one question shown, there was like 'recognise' with a 's' rather than a 'z'. that really stood out to me. also some sentences, it feels very google translate-ish. It's so Korean in its sentence structure. idk if you get what I'm explaining.

@@yonggheelee1743 as a native English speaker, I actually find all the sample questions shown in this video to be quite simple. The grammar question in the video for example, sounds confounding at first, but if you really look at it, it's honestly a simple elementary grammar question. Though it is true i agree the exam seems to use a lot of obselete, niche, technical jargons and that could be challenging if English isn't your first language. I just feel these are very simple questions, at least by my standards. But it was interesting to see the sort of English being tested at a college entrance exam level in a country where English isn't the first language.
