      I don't know if people in the west are dumber or what. The Korean SAT is a perfect exam for a highschool student (barring the time constraint, but a 15% increase would make it perfect). All the concepts required for the test are a prerequisite for a college student and that way they won't waste a semester in college polishing their prerequisites. All those who are doubtful about the speaking skills of Koreans, let me tell you that korea is a highly homogeneous country and nobody actually needs to speak English to survive, but they still learn it to make themselves relevant to the global world. All they lack is practice in actually speaking it.

      @pompmag 4 ปีที่แล้ว +100

      Pretty simple really. English has lots of words for the concept that ignorance refers to. 'Ignorance' is one of the most formal of these and in general in the UK people use the less formal words in day to day life, only encountering the more formal versions occasionally in formal settings. Even then there are usually several more formal words that could be used in such settings so you may not encounter one of them.
      English is a language with hundreds of thousands of words, but only a few thousand of those make up the majority of words spoken each day in the UK.
      For foreigners trying to understand which words are more formal and which less formal to express a particular thing, in general the more formal variants are derived from Latin or Greek, whilst the less formal are more likely derived from Germanic or Norse roots.

    It's not surprising that people who speak English as a first language would find the Korean English exam tough. The questions are convoluted and very long winded. While it is grammatically correct, it's very poorly phrased. No one writes like that...newspaper articles aren't even phrased like that.

    • @starsaint

      I think you'd realise after some time that it's not so much an English test, meant to help students at all in speaking English, as it is a test to see how well you infer meanings and clues within the text to help you. Probably with a life surrounded by academic papers and journals in mind. In my opinion, the skill set the students develop preparing for this test are probably not the most important skill set you want to cultivate in a whole student body. There are other skills and qualities more important for life in society that these students miss out on by the obsessive studying you'd be expected to do.

If a Korean is speaking good english, then it will be of his/her own effort and not bcs of education system. Exams in Korea will be difficult bcs most of them are pressured by parents and sometimes themselves to get into popular Universities like SNU. Which has made exams very difficult bcs of high demand...

      The thing is people do write like that... Researchers, scientists, philosophers and the like. So I think that instead of teaching the students how to speak English, they are teaching them how to write research papers or how to structure their sentences and words like a professional. They are preparing them for a professional scenario, not to talk casually with people. I guess at the age the students do these exams they expect them to already know English pretty well, so they take it further and teach them (or expect them to know) how English is used in a more professional setting.

    As someone who works in a Korean high school let me just explain. Korean students don't really learn how to speak and understand English. What they learn is actually just memorising paragraphs and basically just spotting the difference between what they've memorised (which is correct) and what is on their test. They don't actually understand what is being said, they rarely do. They just spot grammar mistakes mainly. They're not learning English they're just learning how to memorise and it is so fucking stupid myself and other native English teachers cannot stand to English education system in Korea at all. My high school students can barely tell me why they like a movie if I ask them and they've been studying English since they were 8 or 9. They're now 15-17 and have no idea how to actually have a small conversation in English it's infuriating. I hope one day the Korean education system changes so that the English they study actually becomes useful to the students in some way rather than hindering them and causing them so much stress.

      I am an ordinary college student who has been through this curriculum in Korea. To sum up briefly, there are two issues here.
      First, This exam is “the Scholastic Ability Test”. So many academic terms are used.
      Second, there’s a sort of ‘unfairness issue’ in this test. To many students in my country, this exam is the most important test. If exam sentences are given in everyday English, students who have studied abroad since childhood have a great advantage. (Rich people can go abroad without financial strain.) in addition to what appears to be superficial, there are many social and cultural problems involved in here.
      I think there's one thing―exactly “things”―you're mistaken about, in fact many high-scoring students understand what the contents mean exactly, not just memorizing.

    • @kolviczd6885
      @kolviczd6885 4 ปีที่แล้ว +94

      The issue you pointed out here might be true to some extent, for some schools and students, but to say that the whole English education system is based on memorizing and nothing else is surely not true and over exaggeration of the matter.

    • @smobworld
      @smobworld 4 ปีที่แล้ว +145

      @@kolviczd6885 considering that I speak with people across the country on a daily basis (all of us NETs and the majority of us high school teachers) I can confidently say it is the majority of the country with this problem. Another problem I didn't already mention is the fact that we are not allowed to fail students. I had a student who didn't do their english project (a 1 minute presentation on a job they would like - something I learned in my 2nd year studying a foreign language in school) worth 50% of their final grade and refused to do their 1 on 1 oral exam with me worth the other 50% and I was no allowed to give him 0 marks even though it's what he deserved for literally doing nothing. And that problem is also across the board from what I've seen and what I've heard. How can the Korean government brag about the education system and how the country is so educated when it is like this? Of course if you're letting everybody pass with minimum effort the scores will always be good. As with most of South Korea, it's all about keeping face rather than actually benefiting the students. And don't get me wrong I love the country I have enjoyed living here but the education system NEEDS to change. Seriously.

    • @smobworld
      @smobworld 4 ปีที่แล้ว +109

      @@하하호호-y5h the unfairness issue doesn't change though. Because even rich students who don't go abroad can still pay a lot of money to go to 학원s and get private tutoring specifically tailored to the 수능 so they're still getting the advantage because they are wealthy and I have seen exactly that problem in my own school. The high scoring students are usually (not always but mostly) the students who can afford private tutoring in a 학원. I also know someone who has been through the korean education system and is about to start her masters degree and she admitted herself the only reason she did well in school was because her parents had the money to give her a better education than most of her classmates. Which only brings us to further issues regarding students poor health due to spending hours after school in further education and then studying until the very early morning which I have also seen with my own eyes.

      영국인들은 저런 세세한 지식에 시간 열정을 투자하기보다는 커다란 숲의 모양을 보려고 줄기를 이해하려는 공부를 하고 있어요..

Though the exam seems a bit irrelevant of students' on the surface, in a super-competitive society like South Korea, it is actually a must for the exams to be difficult enough to sort out which students are really the smartest by making the exams super hard. As a Korean High school student, I feel like even though they got most of the questions wrong, they are much more mature than the average students here in Korea. We should be like you... And that "They don't really test how smart you are but how you fit in the system" was heavy!! Skills to get the questions right even when you don't understand the text do exist!

    • @MrAoiminami
      @MrAoiminami 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      True, there are different types of intelligence. Everyone is different. Unfortunately, schools often only emphasize "textbook smarts" and want their students to fit a certain formula. In today's world, I think having "soft skills"/being able to communicate with others is far more important and can get you further in life. So students who think they've "failed" just because they didn't get good marks on these technical exams or didn't get into the best universities should not feel discouraged. Like one of the girls said, there is so much more to you, so much more you can do and have to offer to society than what these tests suggest. Life is not defined by test scores.

She was probably laughing at how bad the translation was.
      If I translate your message into my native language (Changed few things because they couldn't be translated directly. I might not write perfect english but I understand it perfectly - you have to trust me :') ) and use google translate then the result is:
      Yes ... He writes a little (they were published in only one magazine), but when he tries to translate my short stories into Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian or Filipino ... They're word problems, not literature. One of them is even a math (discrete probability) problem. They're made to be read and broken down so you can logically solve them, or at least match them to the likeliest answer. The problem with these kids is they have no critical thinking skills and they're trying to interpret the text at face value and only face value. Our future workforce is going to be in serious trouble when they get a job in an office and they have to listen to a bozo in a suit ramble on about nonsense, and then turn that into a product.

The integral question I may have been able to do since I got a taste of calculus in high school, though I never got to integrals in high school. The marbles problem I wouldn't had been able to solve until my sophomore of college since discrete probabilities is part of the curriculum for computer science engineering majors. The first set of problems were also unnecessarily advanced as you wouldn't encounter this type of vernacular language in everyday English. The exam really just seems more appropriate for scientifically rigorous students, not the general population.

      @@CiviClipz It shows their grade school education system is probably more rigorous than ours. Although americans will generally be introduced to some probability, but not much, in algebra and probably calc AB. And even calc AB is common for american seniors in highschool. I took it in highschool and it was basically calc 1 in college (which I retook). Yeah, I took probability as part of Discrete Mathematics courses for my CS degree as well, but really it was something I could have learned in highschool all the same. And the reading word problems weren't impossible. They shouldn't have to read like vernacular you're familiar with for a reader to break the passages down and approach the problems. Someone else in the comments pointed out the first passage, for example, is from a book written by some professor, from MIT or Princeton or something, so readers need to be able to parse it for information, it's not some sort of broken pidgin, it's written by an intellectual. Looking for information shouldn't be limited to a comfort zone. Being challenged pushes the mind to think outside the box

    This SAT seems to be testing the IQ level, which is one form of intelligence. For example, how quick you can read a big paragraph and answer within 60 seconds is something that you can practice all your life and still fail if you don't have the genetic ability to do so. Some questions were more general knowledge but worded in a way that makes it difficult for an average student to answer correctly. In the best University, they want people who can learn "quickly" because you can't succeed sadly if you are a hard worker but can't follow in class. There is some urban myth going around that everyone can have an amazing SAT given enough practice, this is simply not true. There is a cap to anyone's potential in that particular type of test (they are designed to test your raw genetic potential). Memory is also partially defined by your genes. Now, I am not saying that you don't have to study for these tests, I am just saying that they target one form of intelligence called IQ. You cannot have an IQ around 100 (average), and be accepted in a top 3 Korean University, this is impossible because even if you study all your life you won't do good enough in the SAT.

      You seem to forget that the expression of genetics depends nurture and environment, and that IQ is significantly impacted by brain development and mental exercise. You're right, everyone has a genetic cap. But that cap is a high up there and most people have the genetic potential to exceed the average by a significant margin.
      But let's be honest, what's the difference between a top 3 uni and low level one? You still got your degree and now the rest is up to you. The name of the school on that piece of paper can only take you so far

    • @MaxSujyReact
      @MaxSujyReact 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@latenightthinker4737 You are right that IQ will also depend on metrics when you are in the womb to early childhood like malnutrition, mental stimulation, etc. Your mental aptitude is set when you are 3 to 5 years old (debatable). So these early years are crucial to the person you will become. I am a psychology graduate (although it was almost 10 years ago), IQ is a topic that still fascinates me because there is no consensus as the exact role of nature vs nurture, even tho there seems to be an understanding that when you are in high school you cannot increase your IQ, it is already set. My comment was more leaning toward that. If you have been neglected in the womb and early age, and your genes were already weak, you cannot through hard work in high school increase your IQ. My comment should have been more nuance.
      I agree 100% with your last paragraph. But the thing is for the Korean societal perception Top 3 University matter. For the families, it does too. Going to a good University in America can help create strong connections and give you an edge. I assume that it's the same in Korea. So, in theory, you are right, but people like the self-fulfilling prophecy, therefore SAT test is very important. For me, it was not. I was the worse student in High School and College but became very good in University. I never liked school, never listen to teachers, never do any homework, but there was something hidden in me and every time I was at least trying I was succeeding. I later found out that I had a high IQ, which is frankly the only reason why I was able to do well in University while not knowing much about anything prior.
      p.s: I still have flashback memories of my mom reading stories to me when I was really young. I even think she read Piaget back then and use his tools to help me and my brother. Now, why did I fail so much in high school is a combination of getting bullied, playing video games non-stop and not caring about school at all. I was still able to never fail a school year but it was always with having weak B and C.

      애초에 수능영어가 기본기도 탄탄해야되지만 결국 그 수능에서 요구하는 능력을 존나 연습하는게 중요함
      영상에 나오는 외국애들이 우리나라 고3 처럼 수능영어 공부하면 기본기 쪽에서 압살하기 때문에
      문제 푸는 스킬만 잘 배양하면 당연히 재네들이 더잘함
      우리나라 고딩들이 제네보다 빨리 읽어서 빨리 푸는 줄암? 상식적으로 그게 말이 안되지
      그냥 저 문제 푸는 짓거리를 하도 많이해서 답찾는 방법을 아는거임 어떻게 보면 독해력이지
      지문안에 핵심을 빨리 찾아 내는법!
      무식하게 존나 읽는 다고 답나오는 시험이 아니야 오히려 다읽으면 더 헷갈리는 시험임
