The thing I do when people refuse to speak my target language with me (and speak English instead) is I will switch to a third language and pretend that I don't speak English. I get what Alex says about that just being the way the world is but especially if someone is basically racially profiling me (Where you know they're thinking you don't look like you would speak their language) then I'll just start blabbing away in French (I did this in Berlin. My German is decent and I lived in Germany for a few years and these two women refused to respond to me in German so I just went off in French with my questions and they were like "Oh shiiit" and spoke to me in German. Odd thing is, they thought it was super weird that I spoke German and not English and I was like, "How is that Odd? Germany does Border France so..."

you both share some _really_ good insights in this video, particularly regarding one's motivations for learning a language. so thank you ^ᗜ^ I feel like one can get caught up in the mechanics of language study, but it's important to think about these things as well.
*@South Africans* I've just checked and Alex's book is available from Loot, Takealot and the Exclusives online store ^^ (shipping from amazon is way tooo expensive)

4:23 . I know how it feels when you traver across the whole just to practice your target language with native speakers and they see that you are a tourist and no matter what ,they only speak english to you... even if you speak to them in
E.g. german they respond in english

    • @SaraStar7373

nem mondom meg barni yes! I had learnt five years of german, went on exchange and my host family wouldn’t speak german to me unless I hassled them 😄

Fantastic point about not being a perfectionist! I learnt the hard way people understand you far more if you have terrible grammar but say it with confidence, than have one accurate sentence that is drawn out over a full awkward minute.

If the most difficult part about Hungarian is "a weird collection of letters" then you don't know enough Hungarian... 😂😂 It's grammar is really logical, which is why it seems easy compared to other languages. But it is a very sensitive language, if you use just a slightly different grammar or word order, the meaning is already slightly different, which Hungarian people use to make jokes or express their feelings. And since word order is very free and there are so many grammatical options, it can be really hard to pick up as a foreigner.

Igazad van. Én magyarul tanulok és szerintem a nyelvtan nem is olyan nehéz, csak a szórend nehéz 😅 De hozzá kell szokni.

Wordby Word Remélem tetszik a magyar nyelv. Alap szinten nem túl nehéz, de nagyon nehéz olyan szinten beszélni, hogy ne tűnjön fel, hogy külföldi vagy, még írásban is, szóval kiejtéstől függetlenül.

    Szia Lindie,
Néhány megjegyzés, magyarul, hogy gyakorolni tudjál. :-)
    1. Szuper a youtube oldalad, inspiráló. Feliratkoztam. Az instagramodra is.
    2. Tettszett az interjú, gratulálok! Alexot egy ideje már követem a twitteren.
    3. Hallottál Lomb Katóról? Ő egy magyar poliglott volt, érdemes lecsekkolni. " Lomb Kató Így tanulok nyelveket" címü könyvét pdf-ben az interneten is megtalálhatod. Elég rövid olvasmány, és érdekes. Én nagyon szeretem.
    4. Tetszenek a szobádban a képek a falon. Állandóan megragad rajtuk a tekintetem. A fotel kárpitján is. :-)
Sok sikert a magyartanuláshoz! Érdeklődve várom a többi videódat is.

I really like the point made at about 4:30. I often times hear people say they want to learn a language to understand song lyrics, watch shows without subtitles and other media-based un-social reasons. I think whatever inspires a person to learn a language is great, but in my experience, it is the people who want to connect to others who tend to follow through with their studies. I think understanding lyrics, shows and being able to order products are just small bonuses of a much larger goal, connection to an entirely new culture.
