  • Meet Joseph, owner of Meteor Hong Kong. To call his business a camera store would be an understatement. Yes he sells new and used cameras and lenses, film, camera bags, cases, straps, etc. He is a camera store. But it's also his personal hang out. He works 7 days a week and he keeps most of his camera collection on display at the store. He showcases his personal collection of prints and books of famous and not-so-famous photographers he admires. Friends/customers drop in to say hello and good-bye. Please enjoy my conversation with Joseph as we talk about photography, gear, photographers and the future of Meteor in Hong Kong.

    interviewing photographers like this that have a rich passion for rare and exotic lenses - cinis in this case, wowo the value they have on them is incredible, I was under the impression that Leica is the top dag when it comes to expensive prices but no, these lenses take the price, great interview, really enjoyable, what a personality jOSEPH is and a thumbs up to you for getting gentlemen like I'm on your channel, GREAT STUFF!!!!

      If you love photography and camera culture, especially film cameras, Hong Kong and Tokyo are probably the two best cities in the world to visit.... except most people in the Hong Kong photography community speaks English!!

    I'm a bit surprised that TV camera lenses are sought after. I assume, perhaps wrongly, that they are vintage and if so would have been used on broadcast equipment that would not need huge resolving power. I wish we had shops like this near where I live in the UK. Another cracking upload BHT :)

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      These Hong Kong Leica guys just want unique looking lenses. They also use projector lenses as well. Anything to make their images not look like the next guy. I get it. They get bored with the standard 'off the shelf' lenses.

    Man, your "on the road" episodes got so good. Maybe the best (film) photography show on YT now. I enjoy watching so much ...thanks. Again for the cinestill (something I found out the hard way): The emulsion on cinestill is quite soft so dev-machines with roll transport can damage it. Best is dip 'n dunk ... or developing by hand

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had all my Cinestill processed at DotWell using their standard 1hr lab, no issues. I've just double checked my negs, no problem. But yes, dip and dunk is best to avoid any issues, and doing it by hand at home is always the best! Thanks for watching. I would love to keep my HK series an annual or bi-annual series, especially if I can find some sort of sponsorship or funding.

    Oh Gosh, what a great video, it has landed in my world like a hand grenade. My whole shooting philosophy is up for grabs just lately but this has really refocussed my thoughts; especially as I have just recently started shooting film in my FM2n again ;-)

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FM2n is one of the greats, although I would love to have the titanium version. Yes, Hong Kong has a very strong film culture. After Leica, Nikon is probably the next most popular camera manufacturer

    • @vicibox
      @vicibox 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well this evening I have made the change, I will no longer lug around heavy DSLR zoom kits. I have just ordered a GX7 with 14-140mm to replace all my Nikon zooms. From now on photography means prime Leica and Nikon lenses. Why did I ever get seduced by Zooms in the first place? I suspect that means Nikon will be mostly film now and Leica digital; how strange does that sound he he ;-)

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks. Yes I love interviewing guys like Joseph. I don't just focus on famous photographers. I love passion more than profession. I've been in the industry long enough to know that 'pro' just means you make money from your pictures. Some of the best photographers I've met (and I've met many while working at Kodak) were not professionals.

    • @slimnics
      @slimnics 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeh nah, i know exactly what you mean. Imagine shooting weddings for a living. that would be a passion killer.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      SLIMNICS Not only that, many pros just aren't very good, and most consumers don't know what good photography is. A good photographer is one that inspires other photographers who are their peers. It's easy to impress grandma (unless your grandma is Mary Allen Mark or Vivian Maier), but can you impress those whom you aspire to be like, or in the same genre of photography you are pursuing. Impressing others shouldn't be the goal of photography, but it's a gauge to your growth, if that's what you're trying to do. I find many pros work to make the money and that's it. No growth. I've seen their work 10 years later, and its the same thing, or its changed only because clients want the change, not the photographers themselves. I understand the need for 'pro' photographers. I'm just saying I'm not impressed just because someone takes pictures for a living. That does not at all play into the equation of what impresses me about a photographer.

    • @slimnics
      @slimnics 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeh, its not difficult to be a pro, you just need a big looking camera and get to the top of search results. But for art photography i think you are succeeding when you have found your niche, path or voice? finding that path does need help from people like yourself, giving insights, info and knowledge. It's all part of it. Put back what you take out, so to speak. so keep up the good work Mr Bigheadtaco.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SLIMNICS thanks, I appreciate it. I've given up a lot to be in this industry, and so perhaps I'm a bit more opinionated than many, but that's why I started this channel. I wanted to showcase the beauty of photography and those that push its boundaries.

      sorry to hear it's expensive. It's not cheap here in Vancouver either, but I do save up my rolls and get them bulk developed overseas when I have the opportunity. Also you can learn to develop your own, or just shoot 1 roll every few months. Probably cheaper than 5-6 cups of coffee at a cafe :-)

    You don't need to shoot film at all. what a load of bull.. a sensor or film is a medium. good lens and light helps, the photo is everything. enough with half baked film wannabes

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, nobody needs to shoot film, neither does anybody need to shoot digital. Most people who take pictures do it for the joy and pleasure of creating images. Both film and digital sensors captures images differently, thus create different looks. Some prefer the film look. This is just a preference. You may not have the same preference, but that doesn't make you right and everyone else wrong. As you said, the photo is everything. Who care if you shoot film or digital. But don't call it 'bull' just because you don't shoot film
