Look, I know I'm going to sound like a total John Lehmann fan-boy and I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the fact a good professional photographer can do great stuff with mediocre gear ... but ... it's really impressive to be able to take, not just one, but five or so really good pictures under those circumstances. I think both of you did a great job.
Man, 51 minutes - not that I've watched TV during the last like 10-15 years, BUT who else still needs it when guys like you are pulling out quality content like this on TH-cam! Awesome, I've watched it completely - thanks! :)
+Sebastian Becker ha ha, thanks. Yes we knew this video would be epic in length due to the complexity of the concept. 3-4 locations, 2 cameras, 2 countries, 2 photographers..... It was either 3 separate episodes or 1 long one. We thought we'd buck the trend and do it our own way, even though it would hurt us in terms of hits.
I was most impressed with the results especially John's images. This is a great example of how a skilled photographer can make strong images with a cheap film camera. It's about skills, light and composition not having the best camera equipment. This was a great video, please do more of these challenges in the future.
John Lehmann's images with the point and shoot were amazing. That off camera light source was great advice. More proof it's not the camera, it's who is behind it. :)
I just found your channel a few weeks ago. I can't tell you how much I enjoy all of the videos/interviews with Mr. Chan, he is a fountain of knowledge and I think that I would enjoy a 2 to 3 hour show with him, he knows so much. Thanks for the great videos!
WOW! I'm really impressed by the John's results! It can sounds simple, when he told, that he just want to fill the frame, but he actually really care about the background and it takes his photos to another level. Great eye, great sense for the light and objects. That old man was really nice one. This could be shown to anyone who is hunting for the technical specifications in gear and is suffering for GAS. I love this kind of shows. BHT, great job. Please, do more stuff like this! I am glad, I found your channel! :)
Gentlemen, this was truly one of the most entertaining photography related video-vlog-film-thing I ever stumbled across within the millions of gear celebration vids. Thanx a lot!
Fantastic,i know you must spend a massive amount of time on these videos but they are far more entertaining than camera reviews.Great for a winters night.Thanx.I could not believe how good the prints looked, just trying to find that Olympus XA.Don't burn the team out,a great video every now and then is more than i could expect. Cheers.
It was so much fun to watch both of you interacting with the people and getting the shots. I learned a few things from watching. The one that stands out was the small LED light that John used in at least one of the portraits (at the time of the shot I had no clue what he was doing) I'll be putting one of those in my photo bag for sure. Oh, and BTW I really liked the prints from both of you, its not the camera but the eye.
+Huh Wow oops, I replied under wrong comment, look up under Mokeh Lyfe's comment :) Basically John mentioned his LED light in another BHT video "what's in your bag" (Vancouver edition, at 20 mins mark.
When I saw the duration of this film I thought I would not watch it in one go but I did and I am so glad that I did, guys this was fantastic. Johns Amazing photos came as a result that he seen beyond the actual challenge and beyond the camera that he was using he looked for photos just as if he had his regular camera in his hand and it paid off. BHT took the easy route photographing people with their cameras maybe because of being uncomfortable in that environment approaching strangers but both guys done really well and well done to Tarry G for the 'competition' :-P I LOVED this film guys thank you.
Unbelievable work. It was great seeing you both work the challenge. It was both entertaining and educational. Side note to John: exceptional photos. Thank you.
I know this was posted a while ago but I'm still going to comment to say that I really enjoyed it. I was really surprised at the reveal. You both got some great shots. Your images looked similar to what I had imagined they would. John's didn't. They were really stunning. That's more than I can say about the performance of whatever camera was being used to record him. Just like a broken clock is still correct twice a day, that camera was occasionally in focus. Occasionally. :-) Nice vid.
That's exactly the kind of video related to photography that I was looking for. :) Usually you find mostly gear review or people giving the same 5 tips about street photography in a 5 minute video. But I find it much more important to see and get a feeling of how people actually work and do their photography, observe how they approach people, how they deal with different light situations, choosing the background and - seen here very good - what catches the eye of somebody who has spend considerate amount of time with photography. So this "taking the viewer along look over the photographers shoulder" format is so great. And of course thanks to Tarry for setting up the challenge and making the selection process very fun. :)
+Faldrian thanks for watching. This is one of many videos I've shot where I share either my own or my guests' shooting style while on the street while approaching strangers. I have more of these types of videos coming up, but they do take more time and energy to produce. Expect once every 3-4 months for these types of videos. Thanks again for watching!
"Hey, I don't want you following me, okay?" Fantastic how the professional in John automatically comes out when faced with a challenge. This was great entertainment! You make an excellent blogging team, two erudite and articulate presenters. Thanks.
And Mr. Chan is wonderful. A true example of an enthusiast expert, sadly getting more rare to find but at least they still exist. A resource to be treasured..I hope to visit one day.
i like johns style both of you did really well on the challenge! i like how you included most (all?) of johns rejections lol shows that you should keep on truckin and find the shot! btw BHT great channel
you guys are awesome! this video would deserve 100 000 views! there is everything I love in this video : Hong-Kong, people, street photography, film... and 2 amazing photographers (and let's not forget camera-girl and Tarry G who did well with the 24-240) ! are you gonna post your photos somewhere so we can take the time to look at them ?
Nice job. Would have liked to known the cameras when they were being loaded. Mentioned the Fuji film, but didn't know the camera until later. Big fan of Olympus film cameras, had Stylus Epic, 2 Olympus 35's and Olympus XA and entry level OM SLR. Stylus Epic went with me across Europe back in the day, cheap, pocketable and great photos.
What a great vid.... really enjoyed this... thank you. So impressed with the images captured and the winning image of the old guy smoking... so cool. That little LED light really made the portrait pop... Top marks to all involved... great challenge, great images, great vid. 😀😎🤗
Loved this video, really shows how gear doesn't matter especially with film. So many people nowadays are looking into film cameras and get stuck on Leicas, Hassis, Canon 1-Vs and the like, but forget that they are only different in build quality (by far) and those lenses are way better, but still those cheap point and shoots can hold their own.
Yes point and shoots are very popular amongst film camera enthusiasts, even back during the film days. My favourite film point and shoot is the Ricoh GR-1 that I bought in 1998. However, the cheaper cameras are also great, like the Olympus Stylus Epic, Pentax UC-1, etc.
Really enjoyed this and we finally get to see "Camera Girl"! :-) Two totally different routes to achieving non-confrontational, but great street images. Thanks for the video/feature film :-D
+Wayne Goodman thanks! It could have been longer if we included our bit inside Shogun Camera and also another shop where we grabbed the film. There's also extra footage at Mr.Chan's store that would add even more time. I wasn't kidding when I said 2 hours!!
+bigheadtaco Perhaps you could upload the Mr. Chan footage as a separate video? People like that are always interesting and like yourself, he tells it as it is. I'm looking at Contax iiia variants now because of that section of the video lol
+Watch Hobbyist The footage of Mr. Chan during the photo challenge is 90% in this video, perhaps Take is talking about other footage I wasn't aware of. However, there are easily 3-4 hours of footage in total, but all the essential stuff is already in the final edit. Cheers.
That's an awesome challenge from Terry. I still have yet to visit him when I have the time to go to Vancouver. Put down those iPhones! hahaha. Poor John gets shut out too many times. That was much more than a hat trick. Go John!
+DaDonFather I actually got zero no's, but being Asian and having Camera Girl with me was a huge advantage. Spending 1 hour of my time looking for and hanging out with Mr.Chan wasn't my wisest decision, but hey, I got another hat!!
+Luis Santos thanks! Ha ha, would love to do it, but there's no budget to do something like this weekly!! Once a month is the maximum I could do it! Thanks for watching
Amazing video! Both of you have done a very good job. Bigheadtaco your videos are great and they inspired me to grap my camera and take photos everyday. Keep going on like this, Thanks!
I think you may have been better shooting superia "premium" instead of Xtra, given it's finer grain. However some of these black and white conversions are fantastic. I'd be interested to hear what scanner John uses.
On youtube, there are many young guys, who are focused mostly on the gear. I do like the videos with Mr. John Lehmann, which are more focused on the photography itself, than the gear.

+dordjé sanchez probably not because David carries good condition F3s in working condition with warranty. However, you can find them in HK for around that price that's in average condition with some brassing along the top and bottom.
What a great idea and I am going to propose such a project to my CC, the image of "Smoking Man & Umbrella Girl " are great images despite the limitations of the camera. I have just extracted my Olympus Stylus zoom 115 from my collection and will load it with film but you do need to edit your videos, thumbs up never the less. What film and developer were used?
+mamiyapress thanks for watching. John dropped off both our rolls to a local commercial lab and then scanned them with his personal home scanner. As for editing, I left it completely up to my producer/editor. Although it's long, we basically wanted to create a full episode, not a condensed 15 min video, or a 3 part video. +etjernlund John is an award winning photojournalist and I too am a great fan of his photography. No need to justify :-)
Thanks so much! Definitely not my favorite camera but I pulled it off. Cheers
+etjernlund i was also very impressed with John's photographs, almost surprised.
The best video from Take by far. Lehmann is great on his trade. Took his time and be methodical all the way.
it was fun shooting it. Thanks for watching
Man, 51 minutes - not that I've watched TV during the last like 10-15 years, BUT who else still needs it when guys like you are pulling out quality content like this on TH-cam! Awesome, I've watched it completely - thanks! :)

Jesus, Lehmann's shots are so nice. this is the best Hong Kong camera challenge I've seen (directly compared to Digital Rev). Such a great video.
This is such a great video. I've come back to rewatch it many times over!
What a fun show, John's pictures carry emotions, its amazing. Taco a great show host.
Excellent show. Wow.. amazing images captured. Sorry about that Take but John Lehmann definitely won that one! That umbrella shot was so cool!
Mr Chan is a wonderful man, a true gent.
That looked like a lot of fun!! John really nailed with that beautiful image of the circles and umbrella. That was a keeper.
WOW! I'm really impressed by the John's results! It can sounds simple, when he told, that he just want to fill the frame, but he actually really care about the background and it takes his photos to another level. I love the old man smoking image John. Its brilliant. The first 3 shots we see in paper from you its just stellar shots.
Wow, John's portraits are great!
Gentlemen, this was truly one of the most entertaining photography related video-vlog-film-thing I ever stumbled across within the millions of gear celebration vids. Thanx a lot!
the two of you together is really enjoyable to watch
These long-form episodes of Take's have got to be some of best things to watch on lazy weekends.
Ha ha, thanks for that. I know many don’t have the patience to sit through these, but for those that do like yourself, I’m glad you enjoyed it :-)
Lehmann had some really fabulous images from that camera, really shows that gear is not the big factor. Fun competition =)
+Rick N Do you know which LED light John used? Manfrotto ML240 or ML360, perhaps? And what would be the difference? regards
+Huh Wow I'll ask John to get back to you.
David Tang Thanks in advance! Really enjoyed this vid and John knows how to paint with light!
+Huh Wow oops, I replied under wrong comment, look up under Mokeh Lyfe's comment :) Basically John mentioned his LED light in another BHT video "what's in your bag" (Vancouver edition, at 20 mins mark.
The [qudos] LED designed for the GoPro. Cheers!
It's not about the gear!
Just great. I'd love to see more of this.....

This was great ! Need to do more!!
Absolutely amazing video! In every way possible!!! Wow!
Those photos by john are jaw-droppingly good, and the takai pictures are surreal.but they both have done great.
i like johns style both of you did really well on the challenge! i like how you included most (all?) of johns rejections lol shows that you should keep on truckin and find the shot! btw BHT great channel
+thecheeztube thanks!
Ditto. Awesome job. I love shooting film.
Really fantastic and very enjoyable watching. Great images! This was one of your best videos, Take. Thank you, and thanks to John and TarryG.

I love this channel so much, never stop!
Take and John, this video is inspiring! I hope I get the guts to approach strangers and take make a portrait of them too!
This was great thank you for all the work you have put into this. The little LED light helped make a great portrait. Love the channel. Calgary...
ya that LED light destroyed me... but also spending 80% of my time talking to Mr.David Chan.... ha ha
candid street portrait = no handshake needed :) awesome challenge!
I had fun watching your challenged video and got some tips thank you!
Awesome!!! So enjoyed this video :-) Brilliant brilliant images too!! Something to aspire to. Thank you for a really enjoyable hour :-)
What a great vid.... really enjoyed this... thank you. So impressed with the images captured and the winning image of the old guy smoking... so cool. That little LED light really made the portrait pop... Top marks to all involved... great challenge, great images, great vid. 😀😎🤗
thanks Steve!!
Fun. I like you guys together.
wonderful video . Thank you . It's got me looking up Mr Lehman s work lol
Great fun video as usual Take. Might try this challenge myself.
Steve ;)
As always à great video!
This is such a great upload and project - love it - so much so I want in on the next one :)
That was so fun to watch. Thanks so much guys! :-)
Great fun, thanks!
I smiled all throughout the video :) thanks!
Great video take and both sets of photos were really good.😀
Thoroughly enjoyed this
I love take’s approach , but john’s execution.
Hey Take, any insight into how John scanned the negatives? Process and equipment?
I think he just had an old Nikon scanner
Fantastically entertaining! I genuinely laughed out loud while being thoroughly inspired. Thanks.
+Quintin Jason Quinn thanks, we tried making the video episodic and entertaining throughout, not just a long video.
Great show!!!!!
Loved this video, really shows how gear doesn't matter especially with film. I have a Yashica T5 really love taking it along wherever cause they are so small, light and durable
Really enjoyed this and we finally get to see "Camera Girl"! :-) Two totally different routes to achieving non-confrontational, but great street images. Thanks for the video/feature film :-D

Awesome video and challenge!
+Waxy Parsnips thanks. It was fun
Enjoyed the video thanks
this was such great entertainment, for your fresh and professional video making you deserve way more subscribers, keep it up :)
Amazing video. I really enjoyed it.
That was fun, good job guys!
loved it to bits guys, this should be a weekly challenge :D
+Luis Santos thanks! Ha ha, would love to do it, but there's no budget to do something like this weekly!! Once a month is the maximum I could do it! Thanks for watching
Epic! great job
Really great video I enjoyed it thank you!
Amazing video! Both of you have done a very good job. Bigheadtaco your videos are great and they inspired me to grap my camera and take photos everyday. Keep going on like this,

Awesome video!! Thanks a lot for doing this!!

Grat job!!! Really a Funny video!!!✌️
Awesome. Mr. Lehman you are a real pro. BHT not bad.
Total smack down! ;-)
I cant belive I finish this 50mins. Interesting competition! I perfer john's photos~ And I realy want to see David's shop!
nice photos! i want that R cap!
funny movie,love it
I love your channel.
Cool challenge! Man, John - amazing set of images from that POS camera. True what they say, it's not the gear.
Judging dragged a bit, though.
This was really great and a great challenge! Looking forward for more film challenge, maybe with a much better film camera next!
Your best video yet lol. Had so much fun watching John on his challenge 😂😂✌🏼️
i love this!
John Wins. great pictures
What was Terry's camera around his neck while judging?
John slayed it!
On youtube, there are many young guys, who are focused mostly on the gear. I do like the videos with Mr. John Lehmann, which are more focused on the photography itself, than the gear.
yes, it's his profession, so he has to focus on getting the image first. He is as much of a nerd about gear like the rest of us, but the picture comes first
Great episode.
The constant back focusing bothered me a bit, but I can live with that.
40:48 Tarry makes some good point :) John did some wonderful picures.
An Olympus Muji is a nice little desired compact camera..I think I would have preferred you guys with Olympus XAs...It would have been a little bit better with more control...but the prints were really nice with that thing...
+Jack McKechnie the $50 budget limited what we could get for this challenge. I was looking for some Konica Big Mini's but they were way over budget. We paid $40 CAD ($30 USD) for the mju's so we were pretty happy with the results.
07:35 I laughed so hard Taco! :D Thank you so much for the quality content. Nice to see some film (I'm not so much into digital). Kind Regards from Berlin.
+Conversus that clamshell design on the camera made it very slippery! I recommend to use a hand strap!
Mr Chan is priceless. :-)
What was the led light that John used?
+Austin Beeman LMX-LD48A LED Ring Light www.lumahawk.com/round_led.html
Fun times! For what it's worth Take, I'll award you a point for your yellow jumpsuit Bruce Lee interpretation..
+Aaron Overstreet ha ha, thanks. I would have been happy with even just a 1/2 point!
in the Shop in Chan we can find Nikon F or F3 for under 275$ dollar US ?
This is our 3rd long format photo challenge but this was a tough one to edit due to the 2 countries, 2 cameras, 2 photographers. But thank you for your honest critique.
Isn't fuji superia Xtra Color film? why were the prints in black and white?
+Stephen Gomez yes, but we explain why we converted it in the video at the end, although I did keep 'Bruce Lee Girl' in colour in one picture :-)
Where can I get one of those hats ..
+Manuel Morales of you contact Revolver Coffee via their website. I'm sure you can convince them to ship to you :-)
Anyone catch what that Contax was ?
