Hey, you make it look easy! I'd always heard that zippers were hard to install, so I've been putting it off. Turned 70 yesterday. Enough waiting; I'm gonna try it.
@@sirishaheely6451 Yes! My zipper fear is history. By now I've installed long ones, short ones, "invisible" ones. I've replaced zippers in old clothes, and put zippers in new creations. I recently replaced the zipper in my wife's old jeans, the ones she loves so much. Which meant sewing through several layers of denim. Success!
I've been sewing for a long time (self-taught, sadly) and I have never seen such an EASY way to do zippers. Thank you SO much for this! I particularly love your second method. I cannot believe I never thought to do that before. Comes with being an amateur, of course.
I just started sewing and everyone was scaring me about adding the zipper but this makes it look attainable, hopefully I’ll do a good job. Thanks for the video¡
Too awesome. Years of having a bag of zippers and being intimidated by them and you helped me overcome my fear in 6 minutes! Good job and merci beaucoup!
I learned to sew in high school DECADES ago. Needless to say, I learned quickly why it's important to cut items on the grain. I never learned how to sew a zipper from Home Economics. I tackled my first zipper for my prom dress from a Vogue pattern. Several packages of broken needles later, surprisingly the dress turned out beautifully (for me). That experience kept me from EVER sewing a zipper on a garment for over 20 years. Last year, I sewed a zipper into a beautiful maxi skirt veeeeeeerrrry slllllloooooooowwwwlllllyyyyy. I also took a zipper class at Joann Fabrics last year and still had a great fear of sewing in zippers. I've collected several items to make colorful wristlets with matching zippers years ago and it all just sat in a box, because of my horrible fear of sewing zippers. I told you all of that to say this, YOUR video alone has been the SIMPLEST zipper installation video I have EVER seen and if I was near you I'd give you the BIGGEST hug I could. THANK YOU for this. I'm sharing your video with any and everyone I can. Again...thank you!
I had Home Economics in high school too! Too bad they don't still teach that. We learned the basis of cooking, nutrition, sewing basics and basic finance to run a household. It was very practical and useful. This was a great refresher!
Ned Lee I took Home Economics in the 7th or 8th grade (wayyyy back in ‘78-‘79). It was a requirement for girls. And the boys had to take a “Shop” class where they got to make a tool box and bird houses using drills, hammers, table saws. I agree with you that schools should include more of Home Economics including how to fix things around your house, see, cook and ALSO how to manage finances and avoid debt, and keep a good credit rating.. No one ever taught me any of those last things.. I had to learn the hard way. I love this video and channel! New subscriber now!!
Hey Dana, I just sewed my first "hidden" zipper with your tutorial and it turned out pretty well! Your explanation is really comprehensible even for beginners like me... thank you and keep going! Lena
This lady can start her own sewing school we would all pass that how easy I learn from her tutorials Ive watched many others and they bore me like get to sewing point lol and she is so natural and full of life
Hi Diana, I'm just a beginner, I'm so glad I came across your tutorials. Thanks to you I was able to make my first two sets of pillows to decorate my living room along with panels and a small accent pillow with the zipper.
Thanks to this tutorial I learned how to make a pouch and now sell them as a side hustle.Thank you so much for your wonderful content that changed my life to a creative one.
You do an excellent job of zippers. I have been sewing for over 45 years and I still like to watch "how it's done", even though I've sewn many zippers in my life time. Thanks for the inspirational way of making it easy to do.
You are an EXCELLENT teacher. So patient and easy to follow. The school sewing teachers of many years ago, never taught what you show. I could have made beautiful things all these years if I had known the techniques you teach. Thank you. At least, now, I can make things I want too. Thank you.
I've been doing zippers the second method for years for upholstery work and sometimes clothes. There are of course far more methods to install zippers. My favorite for years was the hidden method and you used to buy a packaged single zipper at the fabric store. And inside that package was directions often printed on the package itself or a folded insert that showed step by step how to do that kind of zipper. I loved that method for making pillow covers as it hid the zipper. And over the years I became familiar with that look for sometimes working with outdoor gear where having a zipper protected with an overlay was helpful and I understood having made them for years that I could kinda cheat and in doing so get a lovely finished zipper better sometimes than following the directions. The longest stitch she's showing to sew two pieces together then open up the seam to center the zipper over is called a basting stitch traditionally. If you have any hesitation to give either of these techniques a try on a project go for it just jump in and do it. My only advise to a newer sewer is don't get crazy with back stitching. They suggest you don't need to but I'm one of those who always does and lucky me I married a guy who will patiently rip out my boo boo seams. And that's been going on now for over 52 years. So I'm showing my age. One of my favorite things about sewing is all the many ways you can apply zippers and for different projects. I'm a see or think something up kind of sewer with rare use of patterns. No doubt I learned with a few patterns but once I'd done two 4H fairs I never looked back and graduated to making more utilitarian style projects. Down jackets, rain coats, tents and yes sleeping bags down filled and once even a kit that had foam in the bottom for built in cushion and top with down. I look at things and know I can make that. I do the same with my imagination. I love the magical world of zippers by the yard today. So many sizes and colors and pulls. These did not exist 50 not even 25 years ago. Oh zippers by the yard did but not in all these magical colors and designs. The only annoyance is they can't make a separating jacket zipper yet in the coils. I think there is a kit that does that for the tooth YKK type zippers. I now collect longer stone and faux stone and metal earrings to repurpose as whimsical or fancy zipper pulls too. Encourage your imagination and creativity. And it won't let you down but instead gain more and more confidence and skill. So do not hesitate to try these method shared here. Well done and thank you for sharing by the way.
4:18 haven't slept for 2 days, been hyperfixating over sewing and omg you made my night! Your voice feels like when my mom has to explain which container i have to put the soap in the laundy machines. Love u
I love you Dana, you're as sweet as they come. I am a 62 year old woman who loves to sew but needs a lot of instruction. You've taught me so much already. Thank you.
Thank you so much for being so detailed! I'm self taught and I've sewn simple dresses and such but I've never been bold enough to try zippers. I will definitely try your method!
I did a little sewing when my daughter was young, avoiding anything that required a zipper. Now, I'm older and wanting to learn to sew again. I am so excited at the prospect of finally sewing a zipper. I LOVE your youtube tutorials, which I just discovered. You are the kind of teacher I wish I had, but having access to your videos is the next best thing. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise, and making it fun, as well!
I flunked my home economics class in jr. high cuz I couldn’t get the zipper right in my skirt. This was back in the late 1960’s. All these years have gone by, and zippers have intimidated me! Watching this video made me realize how easy this can be! I am going to go sew a zipper! Thank you Dana!
That’s the only way I have ever used a seam ripper on anything! That’s how I was taught in my Home Ec classes. The little ball always goes on the bottom so you don’t make holes in whatever you are sewing! I’ve been sewing on a machine for 43 years! Before I had a machine my mother taught me to sew cloths by hand! I started sewing Barbie Doll cloths, by hand & went on to my own cloths! Believe me..there are so very many short cuts you can learn that most professional teachers won’t tell you! They gasp at the thought of a short cut!
Kristi beat me to it - flip your seam ripper over and put the red ball toward your stitches. It works much better, but most people use it the wrong way. Great video, thank you for sharing!
I've gotten very creative trying to use closures that are even more difficult just to avoid sewing in a zipper! Now I can use the zippers I've cut out of dog beds, cushions, etc. Thank you, thank you, for this tutorial.
Thank you!! I pulled out the instructions that came with the zipper, looked them over, and then promptly put away my whole project. I am really glad I looked up zipper tutorials and found yours. I am now prepared to go back to my project!
I’m 80 years old and have been sewing since I was in the 4th grade thanks to my mother! This video is the first time I’ve seen the trick about pulling the zipper down to avoid the wonky seam! Thank you!
Thank you so much. Such clear, precise instructions! I've watched about 10 TH-cam videos on how to sew a zipper, and none of them were as good as your step by step instructions. I particularly appreciated the close ups of the work as you were sewing and the steady pace of your speech. You are an excellent teacher (and seamstress too, of course!). Thank you again.
Oh my goodness thank you for the great feedback! I really appreciate it! And I'm glad the video helped :) Thank you for the kind words and have fun with your sewing projects! Dana
Thank you for making this video! How simple you made it look! And I did it! Thanks for using brightly colored fabric - made it easy to see which was the 'right side'! thanks again!
My sister asked me to make a cover for her bench cushion for Christmas, and thinking she might like to wash it now and then, I offered to make it with a zipper... despite having no practice sewing zippers!! Your video made me feel much more at ease at the prospect. Thank you!
This is WAY better than the instructions on the zipper package. I've only ever sewn invisible zippers so conventional ones are harder for me (backwards, I know). This is a lifesaver, thank you!
I am Mike, a Boy Sewing nerd (I have 3 machines) thanking you for this video that is so well done. I am going to make a dog bed to a custom size and this has been a great help.

this was like sewing for dummies. thank you so much 😭
What an awesome teacher. So precise and on point. I love how this isn't intimidating. I am a Homeschool Mom and my daughter is now in the 9th Grade. I have to old sewing machines. Both Brothers (I have had mine for years and my mother passed hers down to me) Now, I want to thank you for being such a great teacher/instructor. I am so happy I found this video. I love that you take your time to slow it down and explain each step. How about embroidery???? I would love to see that done. Like names or flowers. Anything simple. Keep the videos coming.
Thank you Theresa! That is so great to hear :) I've actually only done embroidery a couple times myself! Haha. But that would be a fun thing to share. If I get more experienced with it down the road I'll have to share something :) Have a great day! - Dana
Thank you so much for this awesome tutorial! You're a great teacher! I've stayed away from projects with zippers because my zippers always came out looking crooked & wonky. You've inspired me to try again! Also, I love those little clippies!! Hugs, Vina
After watching several videos on zipper installation, I came across your channel and was able to install like a pro. Thank you for helping me complete my skirt!!!!
I needed a refresher...it’s been years since I’ve sewn zippers. Watching this video has given me the confidence I needed, Ive avoided projects with zippers for a while now. I also have the same machine so I’ll be tuning in for more tips and tricks. You are easy to follow and have a pleasant speaking persona.
I never taken any sewing classes but was encouraged to sew on my own by friends because off the rack garments for a wedding were too expensive. I feared and loathed zippers. You have made sewing them in so easy that I feel I've conquered a dragon. Thank you on behalf of every fearful self taught beginner.
I recently bought a seriously discounted hoodie at a resort location due to the separating zipper being faulty ($40 down to $7!) and thought I would just have to live without zipping it. No longer! thanks for these great zipper sewing ideas. It reminds me of the old Chinese proverb that everything is difficult, until it becomes easy. Once you do, you know you can!
Thanks for the video. It has been years since I had to sew in a zipper. Thanks for the refresher course! I learned how to sew in high school, way back in the early seventies. It has served me well. Thanks again. I think that things like sewing and making your own stuff is part of what’s missing from society.
Thank you so much for this straightforward tutorial!!! I was struggling with a pattern tutorial for a zipper, and after two attempts, I was about ready to give up. I decided to try to find a tutorial on TH-cam and yours was the first that popped up. I filled your second zipper tutorial step by step and now my zipper looks amazing!!!! Thanks again :)
Thank you for your guidance. Your video showed it up close and personal. Now, let me search for how to get this whole dress together. Much appreciation.
Oh my goodness, I am so thankful to have found your site. I was terrified of trying to put in a zipper. I have watched so many video's on how to do this and was getting ready to give up and somehow found you. Thank goodness!!! I know I can do this now. Your directions were so clear and not one bit overwhelming. I will be learning more from you, I can see that now. Thank you Thank you Thank you for such a clear and patient tutorial.
am I ever thankful to you? your videos are by far very easy to follow. very attention to detail and clear steps. am a beginner sower and I just have been able to sew my couch pillows with zipper on them easily. will definitely subscribe.
Dana thanks for these useful and easy to follow videos. I'm a Mum that sews a few projects, mainly for my kids. You are my go-to for all sewing tutorials.
Omg before even watching the video I have to say I was so so happy to see your face!! 😂 You were the very first person I watched and used your pattern on the baby bloomers! I still use it to this day years later!! You are amazing! Thank you for sharing your how to's!!
I've started watching your tutorials and now I'm hooked! You do such a great job of explaining the sewing techniques and you make learning to sew less intimidating for me. Thank you so much and please keep the videos coming!
Thank you so very much for your tutorial I have put in zips before but it always ended up looking messy because of trying to get around the top of the zip but you have shown me how to do it without encountering the zip head now I think I'll finally feel more confident inserting a zipper in my skirts. Thanks
hi from Australia i just wanted to say that you are such a beautiful sewer. you make it look soooo easy. i also love listening to your tutorials. your voice does not drone on and on. good work. please keep making these tutorials.
You rock. Your presentation and the approach to doing things are so easy. Other people on here with videos are not even close to how you present to others who are trying to learn. Thanks for the great video.
My mom has an old sewing machine, she wants to get it out of storage and start using it. Once she does, I'm gonna have so many ideas! Love your tutorials so easy and simple to learn from!
You do amazing work!!!! I struggle with zippers but you have me thinking I can overcome that struggle. I will try them this weekend. Thanks for all the great tutorials!
So very happy with your explanation ! Thank you so much for making this video , never could get the hang of zippers ... think this clears it up ! What a relief 😅
I was watching your video on the big screen. I had to log into my phone to access the comments area to thank you tremendously for this great and easy video. Whenever my projects come to zipper installation, I begin to sweat and worry because that will be the part everything will start to go downhill! Not anymore. Thank you so much!!!!!!!
You are so great at teaching! I just love your teaching style. I have been terrified of sewing with a zipper for so long, but I am ready, and EXCITED to do it!
This actually helped me a lot. I needed to have a zipper inserted into my costume back. This saved me money, time, and heartache. Thank you so very much
Hi Dana Your explanations are so clear and the close focus or zoom in at the point of work is so good a clean piece of work, that one should be happy and thankful for it... great going...
Thank you so much! This was perfect. I have my first sewing machine ever, a basic model. I think I bought the zipper foot in a bundle a while ago. But now I need to put a zipper into my favorite hoodie that busted a zipper. I upgraded from the busted plastic to a nice old-metal zipper. Not so daunting as I thought it would be.
I was amazed how easy it turned out to be to put in the zipper! Granted, mine did NOT come out perfectly, but pretty good for first ever attempt! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
So glad I came upon this video before I start my sewing project! I am making new pillows for my sofa, and have been researching tips and tricks before I get started! I have some photo leather that I will be working with… A little challenge. I will definitely practice on a scrap first! I know you made this video a few years ago, but it is absolutely awesome. You have taken a daunting task and made it look so simple! Can’t wait to try it. Thank you so much for this video.
Great tips. I had been "driving around" my zipper pulls and sort of going off-road with my stitch. Your tip a good one. What seems basic to some is ADVANCED to others (ME) and is appreciated! Thanks, I will check out the rest of your videos.
Thank you! This did make everything look easy. I had no idea I could start past the zipper pull and then pull the zipper and sew the other way. I appreciate your tips!
Thank you so much, I can understand you so much better than anyone else who has tried teaching me to sew, You explain so clearly everything. I learned to make my first pillow covers because of you : )
I know this video is super old but I just wanted to thank you for such a thorough and encouraging video. I'm struggling with zippers now but your video helped me a lot!!
thank you so much for years I've been trying to learn how to do a zipper all the other videos seem so complicated to me until I ran up on your video I know how to sew but my problem was always with zipper my boss asked me to so this cute little skirt she saw online I attempted to do it but my fear was the zipper I ran across your video it was so easy I couldn't help but get down on my knees and tell the Lord thank you and I also want to give you a special thank you as well your video was so simple and so easy I'm no longer afraid to take on the challenge of making an outfit that require a zipper matter of fact I'm excited about my next challenge thank you again and keep posting videos I really appreciate it God bless you

Turn your seam ripper over and run the red ball point under the threads. It will go super fast!! That's what it's meant for :)

That is so great to hear :)
I've actually only done embroidery a couple times myself! Haha. But that would be a fun thing to share. If I get more experienced with it down the road I'll have to share something :)
Have a great day!
Oh good! Glad it was helpful :)
Thanks Danielle! Have fun 😊
I discovered your channel earlier this year. You have completely changed my sewing life. You are amazing. Please keep doing what you are doing.
I never taken any sewing classes but was encouraged to sew on my own by friends because off the rack garments for a wedding were too expensive. I feared and loathed zippers. You have made sewing them in so easy that I feel I've conquered a dragon. Thank you on behalf of every fearful self taught beginner.
That second option makes much more sense to me than every other zipper tutorial, THANK YOU
I recently bought a seriously discounted hoodie at a resort location due to the separating zipper being faulty ($40 down to $7!) and thought I would just have to live without zipping it. No longer! thanks for these great zipper sewing ideas.
Luvvvvv this is soooo perfect & neatly sewn. You saved my life..!! Thanks so much.
Thank you for your guidance. Your video showed it up close and personal. Now, let me search for how to get this whole dress together. Much appreciation.
Wow, that is so dang slick! The method for the dress zipper would never have occurred to me in a million years! I'm going to have to try this, now!
I'm glad it helped! Thanks for your kind words. :)
Thank you - good refresher! I hold seam ripper other way (ball point down)

Omg before even watching the video I have to say I was so so happy to see your face!! 😂 You were the very first person I watched and used your pattern on the baby bloomers! I still use it to this day years later!! You are amazing! Thank you for sharing your how to's!!
aww thank you Trish! I'm glad you've been watching along all these years :) Dana
I've started watching your tutorials and now I'm hooked! You do such a great job of explaining the sewing techniques and you make learning to sew less intimidating for me. Thank you so much and please keep the videos coming!
You are a fantastic teacher. You explain things in detail, and I love that you show more than one option. Thank you so much.
Thank you so very much for your tutorial I have put in zips before but it always ended up looking messy because of trying to get around the top of the zip but you have shown me how to do it without encountering the zip head now I think I'll finally feel more confident inserting a zipper in my skirts. Thanks
Lol. I'm the kind of person who wants to fail trying first and then comes around to watch a tutorial. I learned a lot. Thanks!
hi from Australia i just wanted to say that you are such a beautiful sewer. you make it look soooo easy. i also love listening to your tutorials. your voice does not drone on and on. good work. please keep making these tutorials.
Thank you so much for the kind words, Rebecca! Have fun sewing ❤️
You rock. Your presentation and the approach to doing things are so easy. Other people on here with videos are not even close to how you present to others who are trying to learn. Thanks for the great video.
Dwayne Foster Thanks so much! That's great to hear. - Dana
Great video, I really appreciate how you show close-ups and you didn't go to fast. Thank you - I think I'm going to give it a try!
Best zipper tutorial ever! Thank you!
Good to see the old is new again. My mom taught me this method over sixty years ago.

Thank you so very much
Oh good! That's the best to hear! and now you've conquered zippers :) Yay! Have fun sewing more things - Dana
I swear I got the "light bulb" feeling from this video!! I've struggled with zipper for years!! This helped so much. Thank you! 💕💕💕
Very clear & helpful instructions. Can’t wait to start using zippers. Always worry about doing them, but this is very helpful. Thanks
Awesome! Yes! Jump right in....they're so fun to use! Dana
Hi Dana
Your explanations are so clear and the close focus or zoom in at the point of work is so good a clean piece of work, that one should be happy and thankful for it... great going...
Why is it when you sew with a sewing machine it feels relaxing?
Totally agree! I think it's meditative.
FANTASTIC video -- I can't believe you don't have 2 million views! Thank you for posting this!
You are an excellent teacher! I am a newbie and watching your videos have given me confidence to try some new projects. Thanks a bunch.
I was amazed how easy it turned out to be to put in the zipper! Granted, mine did NOT come out perfectly, but pretty good for first ever attempt! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Fantastic! It's SO awesome when you sew something and it works. Love that feeling! Like solving a math problem :) Happy sewing! Dana
Aw that makes me so happy to hear! Thanks for sharing :) Dana
Great tips. I had been "driving around" my zipper pulls and sort of going off-road with my stitch. Your tip a good one. What seems basic to some is ADVANCED to others (ME) and is appreciated! Thanks, I will check out the rest of your videos.
Your instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Thank you so much for such an excellent video!
THE BEST zipper tutorial I've ever seen! Thank you for this!❤
